Senate President Bukola Saraki has expressed his disappointment at the raiding of the home of Elder statesman Edwin Clark. According to the Senate president, ‘the unwanted harassment’ of the Elder statesman, who is very vocal on national issues is a threat to democracy.
Saraki says that searching Clark’s home would have been nice, if there was a genuine reason but using the excuse of searching for arms is a bad sign.
Saraki further stated that the action of police is a ‘gross abuse of state institution’, adding that there should be a thorough investigation following IGP’s denial that he authorised search.
Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, the presidential aspirant noted that ‘circumstances that would make people feel that their fundamental rights are being trampled upon, should be avoided at all costs.’
See what he wrote below
If there was a genuine reason for the search on Chief Edwin Clark's home, nobody would object to it. However, for the Police to conduct a raid on the pretence that they were looking for arms, and eventually, the claim turned out to be a hoax, means something is amiss.

This action by the Police does not reflect well on the country. It represents a gross abuse of state institutions.
Now that the Inspector General of Police has denied that the raid was ever authorized, the next move should be a thorough and transparent investigation.

These kinds of ugly developments must stop. This country experienced a peaceful change in 2015 because the government in power allowed democracy to work.

Democracy is not only about elections. Circumstances that will create tension in any part of the country or make people feel that their fundamental human rights are being trampled upon should be avoided at all costs.
