The minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed, has said the killings in parts of the country resulting from farmers-herders clashes and banditry, among others, had reduced drastically.
Mohammed however, stated that the drastic decline in the killings has not received adequately media coverage compared to the coverage that was given to the attacks.
Vanguard reports that the minister made the statement on Sunday, September 9, in Gusau, Zamfara, at a special town hall meeting on security.
“Let me say straight away that the killings, resulting from farmers-herders clashes, cattle rustling, trans-border crimes and banditry, among others, have fallen drastically. Unfortunately, this has not received the kind of media coverage that was given to the killings. I appeal to the media to correct this,” Mohammed said.
The minister said the concerted and committed actions by the federal government to curtail the farmers-herders clashes, cattle rustling and other acts of banditry led to the drastic fall in the attacks.
He said the deployment of a Joint Military Intervention Force (JMIF), comprising of regular and special forces personnel from the army, air force and navy, and working in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Security (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) among others, helped reduced the killings.
He said he had no doubt that the people of Zamfara could testify to the drastic reduction in the activities of cattle rustlers and other bandits in the state since the federal government deployed a 1000-strong military force to battle the bandits terrorizing the villages and towns in the state.
The minister who noted that the killings had nothing to do with ethnicity or religion, blamed those he said were bent on exploiting the national fault lines of being responsible for the attacks.
