Saturday 12 August 2017

The outbreak of Lassa fever was confirmed in Ogun state, by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, he   added that a 20-year-old patient had been moved to an isolation centre in Abeokuta.

Ipaye, who disclosed this to journalists at a media briefing in Abeokuta on Friday, also said that 66 persons, who had contacts with the victim, had been put under medical observation.

The commissioner, however, told residents not to exercise any undue apprehension and assured them that health and surveillance officers had been put on alert for any eventuality.

He said, “Yes, we have a case of Lassa fever before us, involving a 20- year -old male patient. He visited Lagos State four days before he came up with suspected Lassa fever symptoms. He is currently being managed in one of our isolation centres in the state and is positively responding to treatment.

“Our health and surveillance officers have been put on alert and asked to be vigilant for any eventuality. All 66 persons that had contacts with the victim have been put on observation as well, while the ward he was admitted into, has been decontaminated at the state hospital in Ijaye.”

He, however, urged residents to always maintain good environmental and personal hygiene to contain the spread of the fever.
