69-year-old grandma goes to primary school to learn how to read (photo)

Wednesday 2 August 2017

A 69-year-old woman in Mashulani Village in Zimbabwe has taken the bold step of enrolling in school to learn how to read and write. Mbuya Tatsawani Nyati’s daughter lives in neighbouring South Africa and they communicate mostly via text messages. Nyati didn’t know how to read and write. She therefore relied on her grandchildren to read her daughter’s messages for her.

However, she felt that this had become burdensome to her grandchildren. In addition, she was ashamed of using her thumbprint as her signature because she couldn’t write.

She finally resolved to do something about it.

In an interview with Herald.co.zw,

she said: “I was tired of asking my children to read messages for me and decided to enroll in school so that I would stop being a burden.” She is among beneficiaries of Plan International’s Women and Youth Economic Empowerment Program that is running a partnership with Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Education.

Nyati said she grew up in a generation that did not place emphasis on education of girls and she therefore missed out. Meet Nigerian woman who drums with her hands, legs and head.
