Project Fame: I Got A NO Years Back And Now Am A Regional Judge - Ronke Giwa

Posted on Sunday 28 June 2015 No comments

Sunday 28 June 2015

As some do say; "NO! is never a END" and trying never mean you lost out, it only mean you learned and that does not stop you from reaching your goal in life.
Ronke Giwa an On Air Personality/ BroadCaster at Splash FM 105.5 FM is an example of this.
She was auditioned as a contestant on Project Fame years back and Now she is a regional judge.
She shared this on one of her social media channels earlier today, and I decided to share with the public, as words like this gives hope to some who think it is finished after trying and things not working out.

Remember the Ludo game?
A game you sometimes roll the dice in search for Double Six but never got it until the game approaches the end?
In a 2 persons game, little wonder how a player who is losing suddenly picks up and win the game.
Since its a 8/8 for the 2, the opponent could have just 2 games left while you have 7 games left and yet you came out victorious.
This is how life works, you not there today doesn't mean you won't be there tomorrow.

Keep throwing that dice until you hit a Double Six.
Remember "NO is never a END"
Share with friends and stay Happy.

Female Suicide Bombers Kill Again In Maiduguri

Monday 22 June 2015

At least 20 people were killed today in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital when female suicide bombers attacked a fish market in the city.

The bombers who were disguised as beggars to try to gain entry into the market, according to eyewitnesses attacked the market at some minutes to 4:00PM.

Reports say that one woman blew herself up inside the market, while another one who fled blew herself up close to the market, with no casualties.

Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, it is believed to have been perpetrated by Islamist militant group Boko Haram. The terrorists group is known for carrying out such attacks in Maiduguri and other cities in the northeast. It is increasing using female bombers lately as it continues its six-year campaign of violence.

Although military presence in Maiduguri has increased in recent weeks, in compliance with a presidential order that the Nigerian military move its headquarters from the capital Abuja to the northeast city, the birthplace of Boko Haram, it has not stopped the attacks.

Man Utd Want Schweinsteiger and Ramos

Posted on No comments

Manchester United have lined up two World Cup winners Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sergio Ramos as their summer transfer targets as they weigh up the prospect of losing goalkeeper David de Gea to Real Madrid.

Real defender Sergio Ramos, 29, is contracted with the Spanish giants until 2017, while Bayern Munich midfielder, Bastian Schweinsteiger’s deal runs until 2016.

The deal to sign 2010 World Cup winner and two-time European championship (2008 & 2012) medalist, Ramos, from Real has been reported as part of a deal that will see goalkeeper De Gea, 24, move to Spain.

The Independent reports that Ramos, a central defender who can also play as a right full-back, has not been impressed by the Santiago Bernebeu outfit’s willingness to allow his contract to run down into its final two years.

Signed from Sevilla for £19.3m in 2005, the defender has a €200m (£46.5m) release clause inserted in his contract. Real, who recently named Rafael Benitez as their new manager will understandably expect a fee in case of a part exchange deal with De Gea.

Ramos has made 445 appearances for Real and scored the injury-time equalizer which forced extra time in their Uefa Champions League triumph over Atletico Madrid in 2014. He has 128 international caps.

German World Cup winner, Schweinsteiger, 30, is a one-club player having being with the Bavarians all career. As well as winning the Champions League in 2013, he has won eight Bundesliga titles.

Former Bayern manager, Louis van Gaal, is keen to boaster his squad following a fourth-placed finish in his maiden Premier League campaign.

United have already secured the services of Dutch midfielder Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven for £31m.

They have also shown interest in Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, who however sees their interest as “flattering.”

Alleged N4b Fraud Diversionary, APC Tells Fayose

Posted on No comments

(ADO-EKITI)

A war of words has again ensured betewwn the Ekiti State’s All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

While PDP has alleged that the recent workers’ verification exercise in the state has revealed how the administration of former Governor Kayode Fayemi diverted over N4 billion entitlements of workers to the APC through various means, the APC has accused ‎Governor Ayodele Fayose of his old practice of falsehood and blackmail to divert Ekiti people’s attention from proven cases of sharp practices in governance, saying his party ‘s allegation of diversion of N4b by former Governor Kayode Fayemi was to take Ekiti people’s attention from N720m he awarded himself as salary arrears for his unfinished first time while at the same time owing workers salaries and pensioners’ entitlement.

PDP said ghost workers detected during the exercise were among the methods used to perpetrate the fraud.

In a statement by the State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr Jackson Adebayo, in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, the party claimed that some of the some of the civil servants who collaborated with the APC in the shady deal, and who claimed that they were short-changed, had exposed the deal.

Adebayo said that the money involved in the fraud amounting to N2.1bn was withdrawn from the salary accounts of civil servants and moved to the APC secretariat for sharing from time to time in the four years that the APC government led by Fayemi lasted in Ekiti State.

The PDP spokesman also added that the missing deductions from workers’ salaries for the months of April, May, June July and August, 2014 running to about N1.8 billion was also traced to the APC secretariat, as information had it that it was packaged for the running of the party after Fayemi lost his re-election bid in June 2014.

“We have it on good authority that the missing deductions from civil servants’ salaries for five months were gathered together immediately it dawned on the Fayemi-led government that there will not be funds to maintain the party after Fayemi’s exit on October 16, 2014 because the party would not have access to the money from the ghost workers again,” he said.

In the same vein, the PDP stated that a certain amount of money set aside for the payment of members of the National Youth Service Corps which was about N220 million was given to members of the state executive of the APC by Fayemi as a parting gift.

A statement by Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, expressed dismay that the governor was just realising that N4b was diverted by Fayemi after eight months in office and after the governor was exposed as an enemy of workers, having owed workers’ salaries and pensions at the time he awarded himself N720m and paying back N650m to his election contractors.

“It is laughable that as much as 4billion was diverted and or embezzled by the Fayemi administration and Fayose is just knowing eight months after assumption of office, pretending that a kangaroo verification exercise had revealed this. This is better told to the marines!

“Fayemi had earlier offered his administration for probe when Fayose started a similar campaign of calumny to cover his tracks in financial mismanagement but the governor had no courage for such exercise because there was nothing to probe,” he said.‎

“Fayose is at it again in his usual funny game to divert ‎Ekiti people’s attention from his sharp practices in governance. This is an afterthought that exposes his ignorance and confusion. If Fayose is sure of his facts, he should not waste time in taking his case to the EFCC,” Olatubosun said.

“There is no deduction anywhere. It is not possible. Even though for the two years that federal allocations to the state dwindled with as much as N500 million, Fayemi was still paying workers’ salaries with overdraft until Fayose as Governor-elect wrote to banks to stop it, so how was any deduction and diversion possible under that situation?

“The biometric system was so transparent such that it did not allow ghost workers syndrome, but since the PDP is now saying its government had detected 1,000 ghost workers, we are interested in unmasking the ghosts, which we believe is the governor’s making and we demand that the names of these ghost workers be published,” he added.

The APC spokesman said the governor and his party should approach the EFCC with their claim, including the list of workers used to siphon funds. He said Fayemi would be willing to defend his financial transactions in government with facts and figures.‎

He said this lie is coming now because APC had put Fayose’s administration on the spot over inability to pay workers salary, including alleged N650 million to election his contractors monthly, stoppage of poverty reduction programmes of his predecessor at the time he is facing N1.3b poultry fraud case in court while also awarding himself N720m salary arrears.

“We want to say that this diversionary tactic has failed. Fayose had said on several occasions that the greatest weapon in politics and governance is telling lies.

“All Nigerians, Ekiti people in particular, know the kind of human being Fayose is and so they would not be deceived by this diversionary tactic to continue to owe workers’ salaries and pensions to retirees.

“With money saved from cancellations of empowerment schemes, refusal to fund security agencies, job cuts, cuts in allowances, refund of N24b by the Federal Government, six moratorium on bond repayment, abandonment of capital projects initiated by Fayemi and non-award of fresh capital projects, APC will not stop from asking the governor to fulfil his obligations to Ekiti people,” Olatubosun said.

He urged the governor to show his development blueprint and achievements eight months in the saddle instead of engaging in lies, mindless private comfort and encouraging indolence and crimes among youths.

Wimbledon Champion Kvitova Pulls Out Aegon International

Posted on No comments

Defending champion, Petra Kvitova, hopes “to be fine” for the 2015 Wimbledon after announcing she will not be part of the Aegon International at Eastbourne.

This means the Czech, seeded top in Eastbourne, will not have a competitive grass-court practice before the start of her title defense at the All England Lawn Tennis Court.

Kvitova, 25, said in a statement on Monday that she was confined to bed but hoped to be fit for the championship.

“I have a sore throat,” said Kvitova. “I didn’t need antibiotics so that’s a good sign. But I have to be in bed and drink hot tea, just lying and resting. I didn’t feel well when I came here last Thursday.

“I hope to be fine for Wimbledon. I’ll stay here in Eastbourne and then slowly move to London.”

The world No. 2, who had also been expected to feature in the doubles with Caroline Wozniacki, has not played since her round-of-16 defeat at the French Open. She won her second Wimbledon title last year after accounting for Canadian Eugenie Bouchard.

“I wanted to play but it doesn’t really make sense to play and not be ready for Wimbledon,” Kvitova said.

The tournament starts on 29 June and ends 12 July.

Taylor Swift takes a bite out of Apple over artist pay

Taylor Swift The 1989 World Tour Live In Cologne - Night 1

Taylor Swift, the musician who’s just as famous for her disagreements with music streaming companies as she is her long list of spurned lovers, has finally offered her opinion on Apple Music.

Two weeks after Apple released its new $10-a-month streaming service, the pop star wrote the company a public letter on her Tumblr, explaining why she’s withholding her latest album,1989, from the subscription-based platform.

Per the post, which went up Sunday morning:

“I’m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service. I’m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company.”

She went on, explaining that her decision was meant to be a signal of support for young, struggling musicians.

“These are not the complaints of a spoiled, petulant child. These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much. We simply do not respect this particular call.

I realize that Apple is working towards a goal of paid streaming. I think that is beautiful progress. We know how astronomically successful Apple has been and we know that this incredible company has the money to pay artists, writers and producers for the 3 month trial period… even if it is free for the fans trying it out.

Three months is a long time to go unpaid, and it is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing. I say this with love, reverence, and admiration for everything else Apple has done. I hope that soon I can join them in the progression towards a streaming model that seems fair to those who create this music. I think this could be the platform that gets it right.

But I say to Apple with all due respect, it’s not too late to change this policy and change the minds of those in the music industry who will be deeply and gravely affected by this. We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation.”

Swift made headlines last November when she pulled her entire catalog from the subscription-based streaming service, Spotify. (Her explanation then was that she wasn’t willing to contribute her life’s work to an experiment). The CEO Daniel Ek fired back, mentioning that Swift was on track to make $6 million in royalties from her contract with the company.

Swift’s sparring with Internet companies is not limited to the music industry. In February of this year, the cat-lover’s lawyers sent at least one cease-and-desist letter to an Etsy store owner for selling merchandise that contained her recently trademarked song lyrics.

Hey, in the words of the singer herself: [Insert literally any melodramatic Swift lyric about break-ups here.]

There you have it, people. The power of Swift Shade™ is alive and real. Just ask Katy Perry.

Re/Code’s Peter Kafka had a late-night conversation with Cue, who explained that Swift’s complaints, coupled with concerns from other independent artists, came to change his mind. He said he spoke to Apple CEO Tim Cook face-to-face on Sunday, and they decided to change Apple’s payment policy together.

Cue also reached out to Swift, who he said was “thrilled” to hear of the change. Cue doesn’t know if that’ll convince her to make 1989 available on Apple Music, but that, according to the interview, wasn’t the reasoning for his change.

Swift’s only public response was a thankful Tweet:

Customers Shower Encomium on Heineken for UCL Experience

Posted on No comments

champions-league-heneiken

The UEFA Champions League final between Juventus and Barcelona at the Olympiastadion Stadium, Berlin, Germany, may have come and gone, but for the distributors of the premium beer -Heineken, the memory of their Berlin experience will linger for as long as they live.

Heineken, the major sponsor of the world’s biggest club competition in its characteristics sponsored some lucky Nigerians to watch the finals of the UEFA Champions League and all of them had exciting time at the German capital.

For the past eight years, Heineken have been rewarding five of its lucky consumers with an all-expense paid trip to watch the final match of the most prestigious club competition, and same this year Nigerian Breweries Plc gave some of its customers an unforgettable experience with the Berlin spectacle.

Aside the Berlin experience, Heineken also made 20 ‘lucky’ Nigerians much further away from home, to be part of an all-expense paid VIP experience on the exotic island of Ibiza, off the coast of Spain.

For most of the Nigerians that traveled to Berlin, it was a dream when they received the call from Nigerian Breweries that they have won an all-expense paid trip to Berlin, “It was like a dream when the call came through that I have won,” Benin based Christiana Odiaka said.

Odiaka, whose experience at the Olympiastadion was her first ofwatching a football match live said, she would forever remain grateful to Heineken. “Though I’m not really a football buff, all the experiences about football before now was restricted to watching it on television, most especially when it involves the national team. It was more exciting that my first experience was to see the greatest footballers on the planet. It was beyond my wildest dream that I would one day watch Lionel Messi play live. I will live to cherish the experience,” she said.

Aside from the match proper, the customers also had fond memories of other exciting places.

The customers first had a feel of what was in the offing for them on their first day of arrival in Berlin, as they visited the Kraftwerk Kopenicker, where they were entertained to the fullest. They had the opportunity to meet with other nationals from all over the world while they were also treated to good music, entertainment and also had a glimpse of the UEFA Champions League trophy.

If these ‘tourists’ felt they had had real fun of what Heineken had in store for them, they were however in for real good time on the second day. On the second day, after a wonderful breakfast, buses were already waiting to take them to their next port of call which was the Tempethof Damn after which they proceeded on a 45 minutes road walk accompanied by a tour guide who took them through history and memories of the old West Germany and the remains of the Berlin Wall.

In fact, an Oshogbo-based customer, Rauf Olaiya said as much as he was looking forward to seeing Messi, Neymar and other Barcelona stars on parade, seeing the remains of the Berlin Wall was something he would take to his grave. “Nigeria too can make the best of our history and tradition if the government can invest more on tourism. The Osun Oshogbo could be made bigger to attract more tourists from all over the world which would boost our economy rather than depend solely on crude oil, which have even depreciated in the world market.

“The Germans have taken advantage of their history to attract tourists to their country. Imagine the amount of revenue they would be generating from tourism alone? Yet they cannot boast of half of what Nigeria has when it comes to historical places but we fail to cash-in on the advantage, “Olaiya lamented.

Olaiya, who interestingly is a Barcelona fan was very grateful toHeineken for not only giving him the opportunity of watching his team play in the final of the UEFA Champions League live but also to visit places of interest in Berlin.

“I’ll have a lot of stories to tell when I return to Nigeria and wish for another opportunity to visit Germany. The environment is very conducive, the city of Berlin is well planned and it’s good for business. I’ll forever be grateful to Heineken for the rare opportunity, “he said.

However, for Chinedu Ofoma, who is an ardent Barcelona fan, he said seeing the Barca trio of Messi, Suarez and Neymar playlive will remain monumental. The other thing that thrilled him was the Heineken Village. “The fun at the Heineken Village was unprecedented. There was a lot to eat and drink and I also met and made friends with other Heineken family all over the world. Though the moment I boarded the plane to Berlin, my attention was on the game and nothing else, but the Heineken Village was the dress rehearsal to Barcelona’s victory,” an obviously elated Ofoma said.

Edo Dep Gov. Asks FG To Fix Erosion Threatened Fugar-Agenebode Road

Posted on No comments

PIUS ODUBU

PIUS ODUBU

Edo Deputy Governor Pius Odubu on Monday appealed to the Federal Government to rehabilitate the Fugar/Agenebode road being threatened by erosion.

Odubu made the appeal when he spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria in Igiode, Etsako East Local Government Area of the state.

On the belief in some quarters that the road belongs to the state government, Odubu said, “you are a journalist. Do some investigative journalism and you will find out that it is a federal road.”

Odubu said government was willing to rehabilitate the road, but that the previous government at the centre did not cooperate.

“When we wanted to do it then, the Federal Government came with a directive that it is their road and we should not touch it.

“So it is not a state road. It is a federal road, and we expect them to come and do it this time around.

“Now that the APC is in government, we shall take the message expeditiously to the Federal Ministry of Works to come and do the job”, he said.

He urged the federal government to expedite action as the road is caving in due to the effect of the gully erosion.

A recent heavy down pour has worsened the road as is almost cut into two by erosion.

Keshi will honor 2-year contract

Posted on No comments

Keshi-nvo1

(ABUJA)

The Nigeria Football Federation said it has been assured that coach Stephen Keshi will honor his two-year contract despite being named as a candidate to take charge of African champion Ivory Coast.

The NFF said Keshi, who signed a new contract in April, is “very happy” with his job in Nigeria.

Keshi was on a list of more than 50 candidates published recently by the Ivorian federation to take over from Frenchman Herve Renard.

But in a weekend statement, the NFF said Keshi’s manager, Emmanuel Addo, had given assurances that “as a professional, he (Keshi) will see out his contract.”

Keshi coached Nigeria to the 2013 African Cup of Nations title, but has had a turbulent time in charge. He resigned in 2013 and was fired last year. He was reinstated both times.

Keshi’s success in leading Africa’s most populous country to its first continental title in 19 years, and into the second round at the World Cup in Brazil, was tempered when Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2015 African Cup to defend its title.

Keshi, a former national-team captain, went through a long contract negotiation process before agreeing to a new deal two months ago. He had previously been critical of the NFF for the way it treated him but still agreed to return.

Addo said Keshi was pleased to be considered as a candidate by Ivory Coast but would be staying with Nigeria, with the 2017 African Cup and 2018 World Cup qualifying competitions ahead.

Addo didn’t say if Keshi had applied for the Ivorian job amid reports that the NFF was investigating if Keshi approached the Ivory Coast federation.

Dolphins Advised To Pay Players’ Salaries In 60 Days Or Forfeit 6 Points

Posted on No comments

Glo Premier League side Dolphins FC have been handed a two-month ultimatum to pay up its players’ salary arrears or be disposed to the statutory deduction of six points and further 3 points for every 30 days the breach of contract stood to be corrected.

The Port-Harcourt-based outfit has been charged with a “breach of contract” with all its players after it admitted to the League Management Company (LMC) that none of their players have been paid salaries.

This is on the backdrop of the very first complaint by a player, Emeka Atuloma, before the LMC on breach of contractual agreement by a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side, Dolphins.

Dolphins FC are Three-Time NPFL Winners.

Dolphins FC are Three-Time NPFL Winners.

After full investigation, which also saw the offending employer plead guilty of violation of Article B9.45 of the NPFL Rules and Framework for 2014-15 season in a correspondence to the league board dated 12 June, 2015, the LMC has now drawn the club’s attention to the implications of further inaction- with the cited provision within 60 days- after which the LMC will exercise its summary jurisdiction to deduct 6 (six) points from the club’s total accrued points so far in the league season.

The terms of a contract between a club and a player shall be strictly adhered to and where a club fails to pay remunerations and entitlements due to a player for a period of more than 60 DAYS such club shall be liable to a deduction of 6 (six) points and a further deduction of 3 (three) points every 30 days for which the entitlement remains unpaid… Article B9.45 (NPFL Rules and Framework for 2014/15).

“You are therefore required, to within 60 days from the date of this notice to remedy the breach, otherwise, the Board intends to exercise its summary jurisdiction and to impose on you an initial deduction of 6 (six) points and a further deduction of (3) three points for every further 30 days for which the entitlement remains unpaid,” read inter alia, a notification letter (dated 19 June, 2015) signed by the LMC Chief Operating Officer, Salihu Abubakar, to Dolphins.

The LMC noted that, aside the absence of any satisfactory plans for players’ remuneration in the shortest while, Dolphins had also failed to provide the mandatory Financial Performance Guarantee as required by law.

The Financial Guarantee was designed to safeguard the financial interest of players against insolvency in clubs as the amount owed players would have been drawn from the guarantee in proven cases of default such as we have with Dolphins… the LMCNPFL.

The strict implementation of the aforementioned statutes is expected to exemplify to other defaulting clubs the need to comply with contractual agreement, especially after an official complaint has been investigated and proven.

Hence, the LMC has proposed the transfer of States ownership to the fans through the Community Ownership model, as well as a possible transfer of Club Administration to the Governor’s office for ease of regular payment of players’ entitlements.

“We believe that Clubs would be better off having their charges under the Office of the Governor which has been found to have worked for some of the successful Governors,” the LMC added.

“This will reduce if not eliminate the hindrances in payment of players’ salaries and dues since the players are paid once the Government house workers are paid.”

[OPINION] The Big Bang Theory Is Another Malthusian Therory By Nwanna Ezi

Posted on No comments

download (2)

All sides of every religious debate agree that God created the universe but for the unilateral position of a group of scientists that are behind the theory of Evolution. This set of people and atheists do not believe in the idea of a God because to them there is no proof of the untenable theory.

Evolution and christianity are antithetical beliefs because they view the concept of creation differently. The Big Bang Theory of the former terraces the origin of the universe to somewhat presumptuous by assuming that life originated elsewhere without giving the credit to the Almighty God. To them there is no absolute proof on the creation as recorded in the bible.

While we were not there when God created heaven and earth there’s a truth that underlies a reality. We all in one way or the other reckon with the Almighty God. As anyone who has encountered a near death experience knows, the shout of my God! My God! has always been the case which Indicates a call for help. Most of us, at some point in our lives, have encountered it. All individuals, however unique they may regard themselves personally, must in some ways reckon with the Almighty God.

We might imagine that these people really know that they are deceiving themselves, and that their words are lies picked from the depth of hell. The Big Bang Theory is another Malthusian theory that has been ignored for long. Malthusians, whose descendants until quite recently predicted that the world would run out of food, have thereby been confounded. So what are we waiting for in the case of Theory of Big Bang.

It should be noted that scientists have been proving what has not been real before now. Menopause is one of them which in many cases has been proven wrong. Despite what they describe as insuperable odds, procreation has been taking place at old age since the days of Sarah. Unfortunately, some people have begun to extol those behind this theory instead of the Almighty God who created the universe.

Whichever way you see it, God is the creator of heaven and earth and the mystery behind the creation will remain unravel till eternity. It is recondite. There are a heck a lot of lies being taught by the scientists. The Big Bang Theory topples the list. It is odd how such grotesque theory find its way out. The people that still believe in this theory should stop being parochial and try to listen to theories that the bible posits.

Do not be swayed by theories like this regardless of the trust you feel for them. It is an extremely heretical theory written mainly with deception in mind more than anything else. God remains our antecedent because without Him we never would have been created.

isiaka-adeleke4The Senator representing Osun-West Senatorial District, Isiaka Adeleke, has assured civil servants in Osun State that they will soon have cause to smile because leaders of the All Progressives Congress are “strategising to ensure that civil servants are duly paid”.

While advising the workers to be patient, the senator said the state governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola is worker-friendly and would fulfil his promise soon.

Isiaka, who is the first civilian governor of Osun State, said this in his Ramadan message on Sunday.

He said, “I call on all the citizens to allow peace to reign in Osun State. Never again shall the workers in Osun State experience such a situation that they presently find themselves, as the government of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola is worker-friendly and populist-oriented. Osun civil servants will have cause to smile soon. This is part of the positive changes the APC promised Nigerians”.

The senator also assured that the post-National Assembly leadership election crisis in his party, APC, was being resolved, adding that the party would continue to grow stronger and make life better for Nigerians.

According to the former governor, his first 100 days in the Senate would be channeled towards creating interactive sessions with Osun State indigenes in order to identify their problems with a view to solving them.

He also charged Muslims to perform their duties in the holy month of Ramadan with dedication, the fear of God, selflessness and trust in the Almighty God.

“Muslims in Osun State should see the month of Ramadan as a moment of sober reflection and rededicate themselves to the service of Allah and improve on their relationship with themselves, particularly in showing mercy to the needy and the downtrodden in the society. We should be our brothers’ keepers.

“More than ever before, Nigerians should ensure that the prosperity and progress of their fatherland is very paramount in their minds. Our leaders should promote agro-allied businesses, to enable average Nigerians embrace sustainable farming in their backyard, from where staple foods could be produced, to complement their earnings”, Senator Adeleke said.

What South East expects from Buhari – Ngige

Posted on No comments

Ngige

FROM IHEANACHO NWOSU, ABUJA

Senator Chris Ngige is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He represented Anambra Central Senatorial District in the immediate past Seventh session of the Senate.

In this interview, he clarified some misconceptions about steps taken by his party. He also spoke on what the South East expects from the APC administration.

Excerpts:

There has been a lot of dust over Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s comments about his emergence as Deputy Senate President, filling the slot for the South East. Would you say the ripples are necessary?

Why should Ike Ekweremadu be making a case for the South South? Is he from the South South? He has no locus standi to say that. Even the South East he is talking about, he can’t, in all righteousness, claim that he can speak for us in the APC of the South East nor can he speak for the Buhari APC-controlled government, dictating for them what to do for the South East. I was disappointed when I read it (Ekweremadu’s comments). I read it in all the newspapers and I saw it in the electronic media, I saw it on television – the NTA. I saw it on Channels. I saw it on AIT. I was a little bit confused and disappointed, to be frank with you. Senator Ike Ekweremadu is someone I like a lot. He is a young man. He is intelligent.

I can tell you, without fear of equivocation, that when we were in the Seventh Senate, he made us proud. I don’t know what got over him for making this pronouncement that he has got the share of the Igbo of the South East. He didn’t get our share. The share he got was for himself. He is a receiver of a stolen good. The PDP people in the Senate had an opportunity because our 59 senators were not in chambers when they elected him Deputy Senate President and forced on us a hybrid headship of the Nigerian Senate. I don’t want to go into the merits or demerits of that. All of us know what caused it.

They took away that position by default. They stole it and Senator Ike Ekweremadu took it. He took that stolen material. If it were to be me, I would just keep quiet and allow things unfold. But with this statement now, he is incensing our members in the Senate. He is gloating. Our members are not happy. Even our party members in the APC, in the South East, are not happy and rightfully too because the implication of his Deputy Senate Presidency is that the PDP in Nigeria has the highest ranking elected public officer from the South East coming from their fold and that person is Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

On the side of the South East APC, it has endangered us because the PDP in the South East will have oxygen to breathe from because they now have the highest-ranking person in Nigeria coming from the South East. That is a disadvantage to us and that puts us in a difficult position on our aspiration to make the South East people to join the main stream of Nigerian politics by aligning with the President (Muhammadu) Buhari-led APC government. He has made our job difficult, but we are going to face it squarely. We won’t give up. You know, there are many ways to kill a rat. You can decide to go and kill it manually; you can go and put it in hot water, and you can use poison – Gamalin.

We are back to the drawing table because it poses a problem for us. For some of us who know the powers and the rules of the Senate, a Deputy Senate President exercises powers given to him by the Senate President. It only asks him to act for the Senate President when he is not around. The Deputy Senate President is like a deputy governor – a spare tyre. He is a spare; you don’t use your spare when your tyres are okay in a vehicle. If it is in your house, if you have public power supply, you don’t use your generator. My very good friend and brother, Ike Ekweremadu, misfired when he said he has got the share of the South East. The share he got was for himself; it is not for the South East. His position is not anything to gloat and rejoice about because we know what is involved. Order 26 of the Senate Rules prescribes his functions and powers; it is only a one line item, which says: “He acts in the absence of the President of the Senate or any other functions given to him by the President of the Senate.” that is one line.

As a matter of fact, the leader of the Senate is given more powers by the Standing Order because he is the one that controls the business of the Senate. He introduces all the bills and looks at the Order Paper with the chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, seeing what and what will be the business of the day. Functionally, the position of Senate Majority leader is more functional, as far as I am concerned. I wouldn’t want our brother to deceive our people by saying he has got our share, as if by getting that, the APC government should not send something to us in the APC in the South East, so that our people will know that we are part of the government. What Senator Ekweremadu has is personal to him; it is a stolen item that was handed over to him to keep by his party; it doesn’t concern us; that is my take on that.

Do you habour fears that Ekweremadu’s emergence might affect South East’s quest for the zoning of Secretary to the Government of the Federation to it?

The position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) is an executive appointment. The office is a clearing house for executive business. Therefore, it is the prerogative of the president; the appointment is at his prerogative. Our party knows the challenges of the South East and the South South, in terms of what happened to us during the elections. The good thing there is that our president, happily, is a general. In warfare, an area where your enemy is strong is where you deploy the crack brigade; that you have the crack armaments there. You do a lot of air sorties, air bombardments. Your air force will go there and bomb the place many times; so, you spend more in such an area. In politics, it is not different. One will expect that in an APC government, efforts will be made to bring up the South South and the South East that are weaker; more work will come in there. The president knows what to do; we will not speak for him. There is nothing that guarantees that the area you did well today, you will do well there tomorrow. Politics is dynamic and the situation is fluid. Our party has a policy and strategy arm and I know that the right thing will be done.

You are one of the leaders of the South East in the APC. What are the key things you think the people of the zone are expecting this government to do for them?

Well, the preponderance of the people of the South East didn’t believe that a change of government was possible. Luckily, some of us believed in it. Luckily, the mantra in our party is ‘change.’ While the people of the South East are hoping, we also expect them to change in their political behaviour and political culture. There are a lot of things they will expect from our government. There are a lot of things we expect from them too. It is reciprocal. This party is not like PDP; we don’t share  money in polling booths, like PDP do and even APGA; we don’t believe in that; they have to change. Our government believes in equity; everybody knows that the South East roads are one of the worst in the country. Enugu-Onitsha through Awka, Enugu-Okigwe-Umuahia-Aba-Port-Harcourt is impassable. Onitsha-Nnewi-Arondiziogwu-Okigwe, Umuahia-Ikot-Ekpene-Aba and Onitsha-Aba are all impassable; so many federal roads that abound there. So, for the people of the South East, they are looking up to this government to give them good roads and infrastructure. They will also expect the second Niger Bridge, which has been talked about for the past 18 to 20 years. The talk about the second Niger Bridge is becoming embarrassing. This is a 1.8 kilometre bridge. The Jonathan administration claimed that work was going on there, but if you go there you will see nobody.

A 1.8 kilometre bridge; today they will say they have awarded it and Julius Berger is handling it and that they have finances from that IFC, but we cannot see all those things. This is a bridge that has been awarded three times. It was awarded by President Obasanjo, awarded by President Yar’Adua with the Enugu Airport. Providentially, the Enugu Airport took off. Yar’Adua made it an international airport. The Jonathan administration came again in 2011, and awarded the bridge again and broke the ground. That was midway into 2012 or 2013, I’ve forgotten. During the last election, they came again.

The bad aspect of it all is that even their conception of what they want to do with the bridge is marred by irregularities and fraudulent expenditure and expositions. That 1.8 kilometre bridge, when they gave it out under Obasanjo they gave it to Gitto. Gitto came there and flagged it off. Then Governor James Ibori, Governor Peter Obi and Andy Uba, went into the bush there and danced with some cultural dancers and so on and left. It was over priced at that time. The over pricing of the bridge that we are talking about, as at that time, was going to cost N70 billion. I shouted blue murder because I had just left as governor. They came to me about it when I was governor and I told them that I did not support it and would not be part of a Public Private Partnership arrangement. Immediately I left, they started doing PPP arrangement with Gitto; it didn’t also take off.

When President Jonathan came on board, he also moved it into PPP consortium arrangement again and increased the price from the original N70 billion to N115 billion to Julius Berger. The same company did a bridge of an equivalent length in Lagos from Lekki into Ikoyi –Alexander Avenue – for N32 billion under Governor Fashola. I asked them why? They said oh, because we have rail track on the drawing. Railtrack does not mean it will now attract an additional N90 billion. I do not understand what is going on. As far as I am concerned, the Igbo of South Eastern Nigeria will not pay one kobo to pass on that bridge they are building because they say they are doing a toll gate. I will lead a demonstration to the bridge to ensure our people do not pay any toll, assuming that is what is going on.

I am very confident that the Buhari administration will have a second look at what is going on there and call for a round table discussion, so that we will know the actual value of the bridge, know what profit is due to whoever is building the bridge and then we carry on from there.

The contractor is entitled to some profit. I built roads in Anambra State. The roads were built and contractors still had their profit, but they gave us quality roads and they gave us value for our money. Those roads I built in Anambra State 12, 13 years ago are still there. They were built by RCC and Setracco. We got quality jobs and we paid for the jobs.

The second Niger Bridge is what we expect this government to do for us because the other bridge is rickety; that bridge is in a state of disuse. It has not been well-managed. It is also a bridge that has suffered the full weight of hostilities during the civil war. It was a bridge that was used by the army on both sides. At one point, they went and removed a portion of that bridge. At one time, they put bombs there. So, the existing bridge has suffered wear and tear from usage over time.

We need a second bridge, as a replacement bridge. That was one of the reasons I said nobody would ask us to pay money to use it. We are not the only users of the bridge. The people of South South need the bridge to go home from Lagos. The people of Benue, Kogi, the North Central use it too. So, why surcharge us? Are we second-class citizens? No, we are not. This is my take on what our government will do. Government should do that bridge and give it to the Igbo. The Igbo will be very happy.

We will also want government to face corruption. Once the system is not corrupt, the people will benefit, the South easterners will benefit. So, if you give them a level playing field, which is in an anti-corruption measure, the South easterners will thrive. I don’t want to talk about the economy; our economy will be a strong economy. Our people do a lot of buying and selling. They do a lot of commerce; they do a lot of manufacturing. The industries will come up, same way if you give them power. There are companies that litter the roads in Onitsha, Nnewi, Orlu and Aba. Business clusters will come back to life. More than 3,500 industries are dead and these are the people that will provide jobs for the people. An APC government is what the Igbo require and I can tell you that very soon when the government kicks off, the Igbo will know that this is their own government, a government that is environmentally friendly to them.

Nigerians have two major concerns, regarding the APC government. First is the inability of the president to make key appointments and the other thing is the recent statement by the president about his old age. What do you make of these concerns?

You are misquoting the president. The usage of the word, ‘I am old’ is in a different connotation. He was talking about another thing. He said, ‘I am now 72 years old. I will be 73 by my next birthday; how I wish I were younger.’ That was what he said.

Just like me now, there are certain times that my boys will come and they put on the musical set in our house, the way they would dance would not be the way I would dance. They are 20 something years; their style is not my style. That is what the president is talking about. But the press people oh! All the headlines were, Buhari: I am old, I am too old to do something. These were things that were said during elections. We have come out of the elections; we should all be supportive of the government. He said he wished he had become Head-of-State at the time he became governor because at that age he did a lot in the North East. That is why the whole of the North Eastern State of Nigeria, from Bauchi to Adamawa to Taraba, Borno to Yobe to Gombe will always vote Buhari en mass. They love what he did in the North East when he was military governor there.

Like the North East, he did a lot when he was in charge of petroleum. He was 40-something years then? That is what he was talking about, not that he wouldn’t do wonders. Let him kick off, you know a locomotive engine takes off gradually and once the engine has moved, it goes non- stop. If you are on the track it will crush you. We are asking for time.

He has given reasons for the little delay in doing certain things. He explained he did not receive handover notes from the outgoing people until May 28. He asked his transition committee to run through them very quickly and work day and night, brought resource people to look at some of the things that were turned into a workable document. This again, he summarised and action points taken out and in these action points government will have the ones it will do as quick fixes or what you call immediate and you will have the ones that will be done on a medium and long term.

We are in a democracy and things will be done democratically. Crime and fraud are always there; it will be addressed. Things will take a natural shape. He had allayed fears that he wants to take his time. He is an experienced administrator and I will plead that you people give him some more time.

There are some APC leaders who have their eyes on 2019 and they are already fighting and outdoing one another on how to take the structure of the party. There are insinuations that the crisis over the National Assembly election was aggravated by these moves. How true is that?

Tell me how? What has the leadership of the National Assembly got to do with it? Our party leadership is intact and they have a tenure from the national down to the states, down to the local government areas to the wards. Everybody has a tenure of four years, unless you resign or you are involved in misconduct, in which case you are impeached at the executive level, national or state or whatever.

How does this translate into the battle for 2019? Nobody will do that at this time. Do we know who will be alive in 2019? Do you know who will be alive in 2018 or 2017 or 2016? It is a makeup of the press. I don’t blame the press because those catchy headlines make sales. And for the press and the news people, any bad news is good news.

Buhari To Remove Fuel Subsidy, Invest Savings On Education

Posted on No comments

Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari plans to totally remove fuel subsidy, it has emerged. Money saved from this will be used to provide free and compulsory primary/secondary education across the country.

This is reported to be part of the recommendations made by the transition committee that helped the president to work out a blueprint for his administration.

According to Vanguard, the Buhari-led administration is also planning to unbundle the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to make it more efficient in the production and delivery of products to Nigerians.

To ensure the planned removal go as planned, the Labour, which led a strike against a similar move by former president Goodluck Jonathan in 2012, was involved in the decision.

“Labour is part of the decision; they have accepted the proposal of fuel subsidy removal,” a source, who is a member of the transition committee, told Vanguard.

“A committee is likely to be set up by the federal government to work out the modalities of what is to be done in that respect.

“But the truth is that total removal of fuel subsidy has been recommended with adequate provisions for palliatives on free education and social welfare for the unemployed.”

Commenting on the planned unbundling of the NNPC, the source said: “The federal government is keen on plugging all areas of leakages in the corporation and whoever must have caused them must be made to account for such unpatriotic wastages. We don’t know whether that is what you call probe or not”.

Ex-APC lawmakers fought Fayose for selfish reasons –Olujimi

Posted on No comments

Olujimi

BY KEMI YESUFU

For Senator Abiodun Olujimi, her second coming to the National Assembly is fulfilling as the legislature remains her first love. This is despite her stint in the executive arm as commissioner and deputy governor in Ekiti State. In this interview, she speaks on the battle between the ex-All Progressives Congress (APC) legislators and Governor Ayo Fayose. The senator who is in total support of how the governor fought to retain his seat, also spoke on what “stomach infrastructure” really means to Ekiti people. Olujimi who is blunt about her approval of the process through which the leadership of the Senate emerged, equally stated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP’s) preparedness to provide effective opposition. Excerpts:

Some view your election into the Senate as a political rebounce. Is this how you see it?

No. I see it as a progression. I have made progress politically. Remember that I left the National Assembly to become deputy governor and when we lost office, I latter took charge of the ministry of Works in the state. After we left government, I was on the governing council of the University of Ilorin. I was also a national commissioner on the National Communications Commission (NCC), board. I never left politics. So, my coming back to the National Assembly which is the love of my life is a progression.

Since the National Assembly is your first love life, we should expect expert maneuvering from you?

No, not in the way you are implying. What people should expect is a lot of hard work from me. They will see me doing a lot of research, plenty of work to understand the problems of the MDAs (Ministries, Department and Agencies). I will be doing a lot of research to look at our laws, especially those that are not working. I hope to be among those who really will be looking at making the National Assembly, especially the Senate more effective in making laws that will make life meaningful to the people. And to achieve this, I think it is important that we deal with challenges that make it difficult for the Senate to enact impactful laws, maybe as much as the people would love it to.

You come from a state that made the term ‘stomach infrastructure’ popular in Nigeria. Why didn’t you mention this as part of your legislative agenda?

Well, “stomach infrastructure” is the developmental pedestal on which we stand in my state. Let’s be honest, you cannot talk about development to anyone on an empty stomach. What kind of development are you talking about if the average household cannot feed? Whatever policies a government pushes for should ultimately lead to people being able to do the basics of feeding themselves or their families. So, for you to harness human capital, you must first deal with ‘stomach infrastructure”. Therefore, people in my district can be rest assured that I will work on empowering as many as possible to be able to feed themselves and provide for their families. I definitely will be fully committed to teaching my people how to catch fish, how to be self sufficient and how to earn enough to send their children to school. This is because I have found out that some of our people have to sell their worldly goods to pay their children’s school fees. So, our people must know how to make money, how to be self-reliant. To do this, I certainly will be working with the relevant government agencies.

From your explanation, it seems that the concept of “stomach infrastructure”, Ektiti style is largely misunderstood? Has the term been used derogatively to describe what happens in your state?

Certainly our idea of “stomach infrastructure” isn’t about putting a bowl of food in your hand. It’s about livelihood. It’s about learning to make a living. People make it derogatory, they think it’s about sharing rice and sharing cows. We do that for special occasions. But the real stomach infrastructure is about teaching our people how to put food on the table.

How would you describe those days when Governor Ayo Fayose battled for survival against the APC lawmakers? How did those of you on the governor’s side feel after May 29?

Those were trying times. Those were the days we didn’t sleep a wink. It was the time we were afraid that people will be injured. It was the time that we were afraid that violence could erupt at anytime. It was quite obvious to all well meaning people that we didn’t need to go the route the lawmakers took. It is a shame that things went that bad. The truth is, if indeed you are a lawmaker elected to serve the people and not other masters, when you deviate from serving the people, it becomes a problem. For example, I am a senator on the platform of the PDP, the minute I keep running back to my party, rather than doing what is of benefit to my people, I would have deviated from the reasons I am in the senate. If we all see serving the people as the reason why we are in office, what happened in our state would never have occurred. But I can assure you that it will never happen again in Ekiti. We have learnt our lessons.

In other words, the ex-lawmakers’ actions were for selfish reasons?

They didn’t think of the larger interest, that being the smooth running of our state. If they did, we all should have been able to work together. Nothing should have made us abandon the state. Some of them imagined violence and punishment they claimed was meted out to them. We knew there was nothing they could lay claims to. But we also knew that the human mind is fertile especially when imagining evil. They got carried away from believing unfounded rumors.

But there are many who say that on his part, Governor Fayose adopted outlandish methods to stop the lawmakers…

You see, it is when someone is pursuing, it is you who is running that really knows how you are trying to escape. An onlooker could wonder why you are running in zigzagged fashion instead of running straight. But the person that is facing fire knows how tough it is.

By the way, if you are elected governor of a state, would allow anyone remove you unconstitutionally? When it is the fight for life or for living, people go the extra mile and this is what people saw play out in Ekiti. There was a fight for the seat of the governor, a fight for the soul of Ekiti, a fight not to lose something that was hard-earned. The governor fought for his life, his seat, his hard- earned tenure and the assembly men also fought hard. I don’t blame the governor at all.

Now that the battle has been fought and won, what do you think should be the priorities of the Fayose administration?

The good thing is that the governor has the right set of priorities. People will see him working hard to restore the education system in the state. He will be dealing with infrastructure deficit, he will be working on empowering the youth. Ours is one of the financially challenged states where you have to go the extra mile to improve the economic fortunes of the people. The governor has to work on taking the ‘stomach infrastructure” level of the people higher from the current level. He is going to work on making agriculture the main stay of our economy. I am sure that if our governor deals with these basic issues, our people will give him kudos. Our people are not difficult to deal with, when they see that you really have their welfare and progress at heart, they will support you to succeed.

Some have said the so-called hybrid leadership of the Senate is a pointer to PDP’s preparedness to play the opposition role. Isn’t it too early to say the party is ready to play the new role?

Of course not. What happened in the senate couldn’t have come by accident. We have 16 years experience as the ruling party and this shouldn’t go to waste. We should be able to use all that we garnered to play effective opposition. Now that we are in opposition, we will have to play the best of the opposition. But we also have to find means to work successfully with the leadership of National Assembly, since we all have constituents whom we have to report back to. What happened in the Senate (election of the senate leadership) is not something fantastic. We (the PDP) were only thinking aloud. We looked at the numbers and worked with it. We saw that there was no longer such a wide gap in the number of senators from both parties. We knew that we had to work on bi-partisan lines. Now, we have a Deputy Senate President from the PDP and the Senate President from the APC. Each of them would have to carry his own (party) senators along. At the long run, this will deepen democracy. I know this is the first senate that will be very vibrant and a lot of successes will be achieved at the end of the day.

The number of women elected into the National Assembly has reduced. How does this make you feel and are there plans by you and other female senators to promote gender related issues?

It is quite sad that we move two steps forward and then take ten steps back in achieving balance in female representation in the National Assembly. Whether people believe it or not, a lot has been done to ensure that more women win elections. I guess that we (female senators) have to meet when we resume to talk about the way forward. We can also talk about how we got it wrong. Fortunately, we have more female senators from the PDP while the APC has two, so the burden is on us from the PDP. But surely, we have to sit and talk on how to bring in more women into elective office. For me, our democracy is ripe enough to have produced 15 female senators, two women governors and ten female deputy governors. Seriously. We women need to encourage ourselves much more than we do.

Beyond encouragement, stakeholders blame women for not being active in the parties, yet they want to secure tickets to run for office. How important is this observation?

Yes it’s true, women are not always strong when it comes to being active in the party. And when the time comes, they want to be nominated as candidates. But those who are active in their parties, don’t get nominated too! I think it is time we have well spelt out policies by which parties have slots for good women candidates. I am an advocate of picking a round peg for a round hole. So in any situation, we women should only back a good female candidate and there are many of them around. But I am grateful to God that in my state that we have two female senators. It is the same thing with Anambra State. We have to give kudos to these states. If other states had done same or even elected one female senator and one honorable member, we wouldn’t be here complaining.

Amaechi Rejects Wike’s Probe Of His Administration, Vows To Use Every Legal Means To Protect Himself

Posted on No comments

NYESOM WIKE

Nyesom Wike, Rivers State Governor

Former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has described the probe of his administration by Governor Nyesom Wike as a witch-hunt.

In a statement by his media office, Amaechi said the achievement of his administration were evident for all to see. He would therefore not welcome any fraudulent probe by his successor.

“Amaechi will use every constitutional and legal means available to protect his name and image from this smear campaign against him by this directionless, purposeless Wike-led government. As governor, Amaechi served his people well and the good things he did with the resources of the state are visible all over the state.

“This so called Wike’s probe of Amaechi is dead on arrival. All the noise Wike is making is to grab media headlines with his lies of monumental corruption against Amaechi. It is all drama made for the media. What is playing out is a script written and directed by Wike.

“While it is no longer in doubt what would be the report of Wike’s sham probe commission, what may shock Nigerians is the extent Wike has gone and is ready to go to manufacture stories of corrupt practices and the kind of bogus tales of corruption against Amaechi that he will soon be feeding the nation,” the statement read.

15 Things To Know About Loving A Female Boss

Posted on No comments

download (5)

Only the luckiest and most worthy men on the planet have the pleasure and the luxury of dating (or loving) a boss. Bosses are rare, bosses are hot, and bosses handle their own affairs.

A boss doesn’t need a man and she doesn’t worry about whether a man will choose her. A boss CHOOSES a man.

A boss is strong, independent, sexy and confident, while remaining kind and humble to the poor, basic b*tches beneath her. A boss, basically, is the best.

Sit back and learn, gentlemen. And ladies, if you don’t think you’re a boss, step up your game, love yourself, and let everything else fall into place.

1. A boss isn’t a shrinking violet and she doesn’t care if you’re intimidated by that.

2. A boss will knock sense into you when you need it.

3. There’s nothing sexier than a boss. Here’s hoping you’re not the jealous type.

4. A boss doesn’t need your money. She has plenty of her own.

5. A boss doesn’t mind being domestic when she wants to be.

6. You need to keep up with current events because she doesn’t have time for nonsense. She also votes and makes informed decisions because she knows her choices matter.

7. A boss knows how to work a freakum’ dress.

8. A boss understands that, in addition to being a good person, it can’t hurt to care about your appearance. It’s not shallow; it’s a tool to feel and be your best.

9. A boss has no time for lessers.

The Sun to partner police on community policing

Osagie new MD

  • As IGP says 350,000 policemen inadequate

FROM FRED ITUA, ABUJA

The Sun Publishing Limited, in partnership with the Nigeria Police, will, in the second week of August, hold a security summit on community policing.

Plans for the summit were discussed late last week with the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase, in a meeting with the Managing Director/Editor-in-chief of The Sun Publishing, Mr. Eric Osagie.

During his courtesy visit to the IGP in his Abuja office last Friday, Osagie intimated the chief cop of the need for such awareness platform and the benefit it would bring the nation and the Nigeria Police.

In the proposals he submitted to the IGP, Osagie availed Arase, himself an advocate of grassroots policing as a better means of keeping the nation safer, on the benefits of the proposed security summit.

The Sun CEO also assured the IGP of the preparedness of the medium to work with him and the police for a better and safer nation.

In his response, Arase thanked Osagie for the visit and proposal, which he said was laudable and commendable. He disclosed that the police were ready to partner The Sun on the proposed summit. He also notified of the resolve and readiness of the police under his watch to work with The Sun and all sectors of the society in ensuring that the police make better impact in its obligations to the nation.

Arase stated that improved welfare for officers, better community relationship with members of the public and combating crimes are part of the key areas he intends to infuse changes in the police.

The police boss disclosed that the Nigeria Police has only 350,000 policemen, a figure he said was grossly inadequate to make good impact on the nation’s security with a mandate to provide adequate security for over 170 million people.

He said it would be impossible to achieve that without the active cooperation of members of the public.

The IGP said: “I am very grateful to The Sun Managing Director for taking out time to visit us today, We are really concerned about our community relationship with the members of the public. We have issues with perception management in the NPF. That is what we are trying to change. We cannot do that without partnering the communities.

“That informs the reason we are planning a summit to partner the communities. And we are happy to partner you in the proposed seminar. The issue of insurgency cannot be solved by policemen alone. We need the public to give us information, which can be processed into intelligence for us to deal with the problems. The country is very vast and there is no way 350, 000 policemen can cover the security space. We need to really get members of the public and the communities involved. We are not allergic to criticisms. Once they are constructive and can create a pathway for us to follow, we will be very happy.”

He promised to give Nigeria the best police, and also re-emphasised the need to place high premium on the sanctity of human rights, vowing to ensure that the police conducts themselves in tandem with international best practices.

“I can assure Nigerians that we want to give them the best police they require. The rights of Nigerians are paramount. I do not like it when people are detained indiscriminately without sufficient evidences. We can do things better, in line with international best practices. We also observed that the capacity of our officers has to be heightened, and I am very passionate and concerned about the welfare of inspectors and the rank and file. If I am talking about corruption, I must put something in place to discourage my officers from being corrupt. During their course of duty, I should be able to provide my men bottle of water or snacks as disincentive against corruption while on duty.”

Posted on No comments

Gov-Idris-WadaThe Kogi State Government says it has begun the distribution of N232 million loan and grants to 145,000 farmers in rural areas of the state.

A statement issued in Lokoja on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the State Governor on Media, Mr. Jacob Edi, said the grant would be given to farmers on the platform of Nigerian Agricultural Payment Initiative e-wallet system.

According to the statement, the loan aspect of the package is being disbursed in phases by the state government in partnership with the Kogi Farmers Cluster Development Union.

It said 145,000 rural farmers selected across the 21 local government in the state had been listed to benefit.

The statement said Governor Idris Wada described the development as a significant step in the country’s quest to achieve food sufficiency.

The statement also quoted the governor as saying that the loan, apart from boosting food production, would enhance wealth creation among rural farmers.

It noted that each of the farmers would receive N160,000 loan which would be paid back with five per cent interest.

It said the governor explained that the adoption of e-wallet platform to disburse the loans was to eliminate corruption and ensure that only genuine farmers had access to the facility.

According to it, the governor commends the leadership of the Kogi Cluster Farmers Development Union for keying into the Agricultural Transformation Agenda of the state government.

It also noted that Wada urged the union to sustain its interest in the sector which he said remained the only way out of the country’s unemployment and economic problems.

Bayelsa PDP Defectors Motivated By Greed – Dickson

Posted on No comments

Seriake DicksonAs the 2016 governorship election in Bayelsa State draws closer, the state Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson, has reacted to accusations by the Bayelsa Peoples Consultative Assembly, BPCA, against his administration.

The governor also reacted to the group’s decision to quit the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the All Progressives Congress, APC, describing their action as motivated by greed.

Members of the group, who belonged to the PDP and served in its governments both in the state and federal levels, expressed dismay with Mr. Dickson over alleged high-handedness in running the state’s affairs.

They also argued that the state’s best interest would be served by an APC government as the party also controls the federal government.

In response to their reasons for leaving the PDP, Mr. Dickson, in a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said the accusations were misplaced as they were only disguised reasons to justify the actions of the body, which he said, “was more motivated by greed”.

“As a democrat, Governor Seriake Dickson believes that the proponents of the Bayelsa Peoples Consultative Assembly have the inalienable right to association but also conscious of the moral baggage of such tendency and indeed the motif,” the spokesperson said, describing the group as “an opportunistic lobby group desperately in search of power without any modicum of integrity.

“They should be reminded that contrary to their assertions, they actually constitute the problem of development in the state and not Governor Seriake Dickson. What is plying out is an offshoot of the governor’s long running battle with this class of politicians on the proper utilization of state resources to serve the people and never to serve the greed of the few.

“Their selfish conception of politics and attitude in government are what had retarded development in the state since the era of the late statesman, Chief Melford Okilo. Bayelsans can never exchange the present peace and tranquility in the state as well as the unprecedented level of development for the chaos and unmitigated rent culture of the past.

“To the unsuspecting public, the body sounded patriotic but it is all a charade: the driving force of its members is to return the state to the status quo where the resources of the state are shared among a few greedy lot at the expense of state development. This is the truth. Since 1999, these are the same people who benefited in state and federal appointments which came with huge influence and privileges but what did they do with such power and influence?

“What has been their contribution to economic development and empowerment of Bayelsans? All they want is free access to money which will enable them to live big at the expense of development and this is the point of departure between them and Governor Dickson. So the motif of the body’s hypocritical declarations is the issue rather than the governor and his rising profile of remarkable accomplishments in development in the last three years in the area of education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, economic diversification and empowerment”.

The statement added that the decision by members of BPCA to join the APC would not make any difference in the electoral fortune of the PDP in the forthcoming elections, adding that the people of the state would vote en-mass for the re-election of Mr. Dickson in appreciation of his performance in office.

“It is now harder for them to win no matter how they try in a free and fair election and with regards to what is on the ground in the state. It is assuring that the good people of Bayelsa will vote en-mass for the re-election of Governor Seriake Dickson to appreciate his performance and continue the good job he’s doing”, the statement concluded.
