160 more women, children rescued from Boko Haram camp

Posted on Thursday 30 April 2015 No comments

Thursday 30 April 2015

The front page of a newspaper featuring an article about a group of women being rescued by the Nigerian army is seen in Abuja

Nigerian troops rescued an additional 160 women and children from Boko Haram within days after they found hundreds of other hostages, the military said Thursday.

“We are still working to verify the actual number of the rescued hostages, but I can say they include around 60 women and 100 children,” said army spokesman Sani Usman.

A female hostage and a soldier were killed during the rescue operation at Sambisa Forest, a base for the Islamist extremists.

Troops are moving into other parts of the forest and have destroyed nine militant camps, the spokesman said.

“Many of those kidnapped have undergone psychological trauma and indoctrination,” he said.

The rescue announced Thursday came the same week the military said it rescued another group of hostages in a different operation in the same forest. Shortly after troops saved 200 girls and 93 women Tuesday, Usman said they were not the Chibok girls whose abduction last year sparked worldwide outrage.

It was not immediately clear if any of those rescued in the most recent operation are among the Chibok girls.

That mass abduction of more than 200 girls in April 2014 from a school in the northeastern Nigerian town of Chibok sparked a social media movement, #BringBackOurGirls. There’s been no sign of them since. Last year, Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau not only bragged about abducting the girls, but said he would “sell them in the market” like slaves.

Usman said the 160 figure for the latest batch of rescues is “an estimation, because more are coming in as operations continue.”

As to their backstories, the Nigerian army spokesman added, “Some of them are psychologically disturbed and giving contrary information due to trauma, so we can’t say where they’re from yet.”

Those rescued Tuesday were at least initially in “operational areas and not yet cleared for accessibility by health workers,” according to Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency.

Officials have sent basic food and sanitary supplies, said agency spokesman Manzo Ezekiel.

Such mass rescues have been rare, though kidnappings unfortunately have not been, thanks to Boko Haram.

But the Islamist militant group has been on the defensive in recent weeks, as troops and vigilantes have moved into Sambisa Forest and raided its camps.

Boko Haram has said its aim is to impose a stricter enforcement of Sharia law across Nigeria, which is split between a majority Muslim north and a mostly Christian south.

Rights groups applauded the rescues, but they urged troops to ensure the victims get the support they need.

“This development is just cause for celebration and undoubtedly an immense relief to the women, girls and their families. But this is just the tip of the iceberg; there are thousands more women and girls, and men and boys who have been abducted by Boko Haram,” said Netsanet Belay, Africa director at Amnesty International.

More than 2,000 women and girls have been abducted by Boko Haram since last year, according to Amnesty International.

I Will Hand Over A Nigeria Completely Free Of Terrorist Strongholds – Jonathan

Posted on No comments

jona-17

President Goodluck Jonathan has pledged that he will do all within his powers to ensure that all Nigerian territory still held by Boko Haram insurgents are totally liberated before May 29th.

He made the pledge when he had audience with a delegation of Heads of Customs from the West and Central African Region of the World Customs Organisation led by the Secretary-General of the organisation, Mr. Kunio Mikuriya.

President Jonathan said that he was determined to hand over a country completely free of terrorist strongholds to the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari.

The President said that ongoing military operations in the North-East had already recorded huge successes, with two states completely free from the control of terrorists, while operations in the third state had reached a concluding stage.

“We can now say two states are completely free from terrorist control, while in the third state, it is only in one Local Government Area that they are still present. That is in the Sambisa Forest,” he said.

He disclosed that the military had already moved into the forest to seize the remaining camps of the terrorists, adding that the recent rescue of about 300 abducted girls and women was further evidence of the success being achieved in the ongoing operation.

On his decision to concede victory to the President-elect, Buhari, before all the results of the presidential elections were announced, Jonathan said that elections must be approached from a nationalistic point of view.

“Our elections should be about where Nigeria is going. If Nigeria is moving forward, it is for the good of all Nigerians. My children and grandchildren will live and grow in this country and contribute to it.

“I always tell my colleagues to leave office when their time is up. We are trying to encourage African leaders not to remain in power as kings until death,” he said.

Mikuriya in his remarks commended the President for supporting the reform of the Nigeria Customs Service, noting that other African countries had already started emulating the vision, strategy, adoption to new technology and result- oriented training of officers that were captured in Nigeria’s reforms.

Oprah Winfrey – “I Wanted The Bruce Jenner Interview”

Posted on No comments

wiw

Probably the biggest name in talk show TV, Oprah Winfrey, has spoken out on the Bruce Jenner famous interview.

In a new interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Oprah said, ”There are only a few [interviews not over in an instant],” Oprah says. “I wanted Bruce Jenner. Diane [Sawyer] got it. That’s great but there are few. There are only a few [interviews], but you’re not going to be able to think about it.”

Would Oprah have handled the Jenner confession any better than Diane Sawyer? Well, given the fact that the interview was watched by over 17 million people world wide, we can admit Sawyer did a great job!

However, the 61-year-old media mogul reveals that it’s becoming hard to think of new and exciting people to talk to.

“The problem is, and even now, because I started doing this with ‘Next Chapter,’ there’s nobody — try to think of somebody — who would be willing to do an interview on a regular basis that you can’t go and Google and find out what has happened to them in the past week. There’s nobody,” she tells WWD about why she doesn’t miss interviewing people.

Kenyan dancer, two other Nigerians arrested with cocaine, heroin at Lagos Airport

Posted on No comments

NDLEAThe National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, on Tuesday arrested a female Kenyan dance at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos with banned substances concealed in school bags.

The suspect, identified as Odhiambo Samira Johnson, 42, was arrested for being in possession of four blue parcels of white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine, weighing 5.345kg.

The Kenyan is among three persons arrested on Tuesday by the anti-narcotics agency in Lagos.

The other two suspects, who are Nigerians, claimed to be automobile parts dealers based in Uganda.

They were identified as Ntoruka Emmanuel Chinedu, 41, and Ndubuisi Offormadu Innocent, 49, and were caught importing 6.250kg of cocaine and 1.490kg of heroin into the country.

The NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mitchel Ofoyeju, who confirmed the arrest and seizure yesterday, said that the total weight of the drugs seized from the trio was 13.085kg, comprising 11.595kg of cocaine and 1.490kg of heroin.

According to Ofoyeju, the NDLEA Commander at the Lagos Airport, Hamza Umar, who personally supervised the interrogation of the suspects, said that they were apprehended while trying to smuggle the illegal drugs into the country.

NDLEA preliminary investigations revealed that the Kenyan-born Johnson departed Bujumbura in Burundi en-route Nairobi, Kenya to Lagos on a Kenyan Airways flight before she was picked up by operatives of the agency during screening of passengers.

Confessing to the crime, Odhiambo said, “I am a professional dancer in Kenya. I was given the school bags in Bujumbura by a friend to deliver in Nigeria. When I got to the airport in Lagos, the customs searched my luggage and found the drugs”.

Chinedu, who hailed from Anambra State, boarded Ethiopian Airline flight from Kampala, Uganda en-route Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Lagos.

He confessed: “I have lived in Uganda for two years. I am married with two children. I came to Nigeria to attend my brother’s wedding ceremony. While I was preparing to leave Uganda, my friend gave me a bag to take to his brother who lives in Nigeria. Unfortunately, the drug was detected inside the bag”.

Innocent, who hailed from Abia State, in his confession statement, claimed that he was a victim of circumstance.

He said: “I went to a friend in Uganda to lend me some money but he gave me the option of drug trafficking. I decided to give it a trial for the very first time and it turned out this way. I was promised 3,000 dollars but I am very sad now, because I am missing my wife and four children. I have lived in Uganda for 18 years”.

Chairman/Chief Executive, Ahmadu Giade, said that the NDLEA was making significant progress in drug control.

“In spite of the new tactics adopted by drug barons, the NDLEA is still intercepting drugs. Ordinarily, Uganda and Kenya are not known to be source countries for cocaine and heroin but the suspects were unable to evade arrest due to the diligence of our officers”, he stated.

Mr. Giade added that all the cases are being investigated and urged members of the public to report suspected drug traffickers to the nearest NDLEA office.

4.3 Million Children Get Polio Vaccine In Lagos

Posted on No comments

Nigeria-polio-001

No fewer than 4.3 million children have been immunized against childhood preventable disease especially poliomyelitis in the recently concluded March National Immunization Plus Days (NIPDs) exercise in Lagos, the Special Adviser on Health to the Lagos State Governor, Dr. Yewande Adeshina has said.

Adeshina who made this known while briefing newsmen on the state of preparedness for the implementation of the forthcoming April National Immunization Plus Days (NIPDs) exercise where over four million children are targeted noted that the four days March NIPDs was adjudged successful with 96% coverage; using the State population figure.

She stated that the Expert Review Committee on Polio Eradication in Nigeria has recommended two rounds of NIPDs in March and April 2015, targeted at all children under the age of five years adding that these children will be immunized with two drops of supplemental oral polio vaccine while the left little finger of all immunized children will be marked for ease of identification.

“The significance of immunization campaigns such as these cannot be over-emphasized as it is known that immunization is the most cost-effective strategy in disease prevention amongst children under 5 years of age”, the Special Adviser stressed.

She explained that poliomyelitis; commonly called polio is a viral disease yet to be eradicated in Nigeria adding that it is one of the preventable childhood diseases which is highly infectious and mainly affects young children stressing also that the virus is transmitted through contaminated food and water and it multiplies in the intestine from where it can invade the nervous system.

“NIPDs campaign is essentially a polio campaign initiated under the Polio Eradication Initiative in Nigeria which aim to increase the number of children immunized by immunizing at least 95% of children aged 0-59 months with Oral Polio Virus (OPV) in all LGAs, regardless of their previous immunization status; to reduce zero dose rate, that is children that have never received immunization before; to increase routine immunization coverage; and to promote integration of other child survival”, Adeshina said.

She noted that the April NIPDs campaign will also be implemented for only four days; from Saturday 25th to Tuesday 28th April, 2015 stressing that the campaign will involve house-to-house, transit and fixed post teams adding also that children at homes, markets, churches, mosques, major car parks and social event venues would be specifically targeted.

“Though the first day of the April NIPDs coincides with the Environmental Sanitation Day, preparations are in place to ensure thorough fare for all the implementers and monitors. The coincidence with the Environmental Sanitation Day is in effect an added advantage to the success of the exercise as mothers and caregivers would be home with their babies”, Adeshina said.

The Special Adviser stated that a target population of over four million children is expected to be covered in tandem with Lagos State Population figure in the April NIPDs exercise adding that the house-to-house and transit components of the immunization teams will administer only OPV to children aged 0–59 months irrespective of their immunization status and encourage the eligible children in the houses to visit the immunization posts for the other antigens.

“In all, Lagos State will mount 752 fixed posts, 2,189 house-to-house, and 1,712 transit teams.  Plans have been made to implement activities that would attract children and caregivers to vaccination posts like vaccination post banners, drumming, music, giving of ‘pluses’ to immunized children, amongst others. The hours of service will be between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily for the four days” she explained.

While noting that the immunization service is free, Adeshina appealed to parent and caregiver to ensure that all children under the age of five years receive polio vaccine irrespective of their immunization status when health workers come knocking at their doors between Saturday 25th and Tuesday 28th April, 2015 adding also that children requiring other antigens apart from OPV should be taken to the nearest primary healthcare centre for full vaccination from other childhood killer diseases.

“The responsibility is not that of the parents and care givers alone. It rests on everybody to ensure that our children are fully immunized. I am therefore pleading with all our leaders in the state; community, traditional and religious leaders to take full responsibility in ensuring that every child in their community receives all necessary polio and other scheduled antigens. This campaign is another window of opportunity to protect our children from vaccine preventable diseases. The vaccine is safe and effective, and is to be administered to the children irrespective of their previous immunization status”, the Special Adviser posited.

She also encouraged all Executive Secretary of the Local Government Areas and the Local Council Development Areas to be extremely committed and go the extra mile to ensuring the success of the campaign and promote good health of children by supporting the campaign with their attendance especially at the daily review meetings, financially and morally.

“Together, we can eradicate polio from this great nation, even as we have made giant strides in recent times with regards to this goal.  The solution is to ensure that all eligible children are immunized” Adeshina stressed.

Don’t Mistake My Magnanimity For Cowardice – Jonathan Tells Buhari • Says I Remain In Charge Till May 29

Posted on No comments

Buhari-GEJLess than one month to the May 29 hand-over date, the Federal Government and President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) have clashed over claims the latter’s utterances and actions betrayed him as running a parallel government at a time President Goodluck Jonathan is still fully in charge.

Minister of National Planning, Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman, disclosed this at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by Jonathan on Wednesday.

Addressing State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, Mr. Sulaiman noted council’s consideration of the transition programme and took serious exception to some utterances and terms of reference of the transition committee set up by the president-elect.

The minister, who is chairman of the Technical Subcommittee of the outgoing government’s transition committee, said the council noted that such actions were suggesting that the current government was either being stampeded or being intimidated.

He said, “We did receive from the incoming government’s transition committee some terms of reference which we looked at critically and council did agree with. Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan remains the current head of government of this country.

“The incoming government should avoid creating a parallel government while the government is still on.

“We take exception to some utterances and some of the terms of reference that look as if the current government is being stampeded or intimidated.

“Council frowned on ‎most of the statements, most of the provocations and council members are advised to work in line with the terms of reference of the current government.

“Council members are also told that the terms of reference as formatted by our transition committee should be strictly complied with.

“When the incoming government takes over government, they can come out with their programmes, they can come out with their own ‎agenda, they can decide to come out with policies in the way they feel like.

“This government remains resolute to the various programmes and projects ‎it is pursuing and the government will continue to do that until the morning of May 29”.

When he was pressed by journalists to mention some of the terms of reference of Mr. Buhari’s transition committee that the outgoing government was uncomfortable with, Sulaiman asked the journalists to go and do their investigations.

The minister stressed that President Jonathan’s magnanimity should not be taken as a sign of cowardice.

“The magnanimity of ‎Mr. President should not be taken to be cowardice.

“That is why Mr. President and indeed council members enjoined Nigerians to see the olive branch extended to Nigerians and international community as a way of keeping this country intact and as a way of ensuring peace in Nigeria.

“As such, whatever the outcome of the election, what is important is Nigeria’s national interest. And that national interest should be protected, enhanced and promoted at whatever level we are”.

2 Million Die Annually From Unsafe Food – WHO

Posted on No comments

whd2015

The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti has revealed that no fewer than 2million persons die yearly from unsafe food globally with kids, pregnant women and the elderly more affected.

Moeti made the disclosure at a talk-shop on 2015 World Health Day organized by the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Lagos with the theme: ‘’Food Safety’’.
At the event, the Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Prof Vincent Tenebe, sought for partnership with major food stakeholders including farmers to tackle the issue of unsafe food in the country thus reduce death associated with it.

The WHO regional director whose speech was read by the vice chairman of YMCA, Mr. Akindele Akinsotu, said the theme highlights the urgent need for government organizations, food businesses and consumers to put measures in place that would improve food safety from the point of production to consumption.
His words: ‘’Unsafe food is linked to the death of an estimated 2million people annually and the Africa region is without exception. Infants, young children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with an underlying illness are particularly vulnerable’’.

According to him, in 2014, there were more than 100,000 cases of cholera in 22 countries resulting in over 1,700 death stressing ‘’so far this year, cholera outbreaks in 13 countries have led to over 200 death out of more than 13,000 cases’’.

The health expert noted that food contaminated by harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemical substances can lead to a wide range of health problems which is responsible for over 200 diseases, including typhoid fever, diarrhoea and cancers.

He called on African governments to prioritise food safety, align policies in agriculture, trade, health, education, social protection and mobilize adequate resources to make food safe.

Moeti explained that WHO would continue to collaborate with the Food and Agriculture Organization, World Organization for Animal Health and other partners to ensure food is safe ‘’from farm to plate’’ in the African region.

In his remarks at the event, Tenebe who was represented by the Director, Regional Training Institute for Open and Distance Learning (RETIDAL), Prof Vincent Ogunlela, said the theme underscore the importance of food safety which is a global challenge.

Ogunlela lauded YMCA for partnering with NOUN to promote food safety noting that the issue of food security is important thus the need to adhere to certain conditions while handling food.

The chairman of YMCA of Lagos, Mr. Mike Onilude, said the body empower young people for the service to their community and nation without any form of discrimination and assured the management of NOUN of its support on the issue of food safety.

Onilude added: “As an International Non Governmental Organization, YMCA operates in 120 countries across the World offering support and development programmes and services to people of the World with special focus on young people’’.

The Dean, School of Health Sciences of NOUN, Prof Mba Okoronkwo, said the World Health Day is an opportunity to alert people working in different government sectors, farmers, manufacturers, retailers, health practitioners and consumers about the importance of food safety and the part each can play in ensuring that everyone can feel confident that the food on their plate is safe to eat.

Professor Mba noted that food supply has become globalized, thus the need to strengthen food safety systems in and between countries is becoming more and more evident and that is why WHO is promoting efforts to improve food safety.

In the keynote address, Dr. Florence Uchendu of NOUN School of Health Sciences, revealed that 80 per cent of pupils in the country are suffering from night blindness because of lack of Vitamin A while stressing that government has a major role to play in food safety.

She disclosed night blindness is high in the country thus government effort at reducing it by fortifying sugar, vegetable oil and flour adding ‘’it affects about 30percent of pre-school children between the age bracket of 0-5 years. Many of them can’t see when it is dark. Their immunity is also low and they get affected with disease easily’’.

Malaria burden: The “bite” goes on

Posted on No comments

CDWgHw2VEAIDmYF

Eradicating malaria or reducing its burden in most tropical countries, including Nigeria, has remained a major concern to governments in Africa and the international community because of high mortality rate caused by the disease. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has set aside the 25th of April annually to create awareness on the disease as part of its strategies to reduce the disease burden.

Speaking in a forum tagged, “Malaria: The Nigeria Challenge,” sponsored by Novo Health Africa, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr Dorothy Jeff-Nnamani described malaria as a major public health problem in Nigeria contributing directly to poverty, low productivity, reduced school attendance and accounts for more cases of deaths than any other country in the world.

She said the Federal Ministry of Health estimates financial loss from malaria in the form of treatment costs, prevention, loss of man-hour etc as roughly 132billion naira annually and attributes 30% of childhood deaths and 11% of maternal deaths to malaria. According to her, malaria is a disease that has been around with us and because of that people most times forget how deadly it is. “It is a major contributor to mortality in children under 5, pregnant women and the elderly.

“For many years, Nigeria and the rest of the world have committed huge resources to the fight against malaria. No doubt we have recorded measurable significant success. However the desired ultimate goal will be the total elimination and finally global eradication of malaria.

“Unquestionably, that calls for action from every stakeholder from fundamentals such as education, adequate creation of awareness, proper identification of signs and symptoms, recording of cases, accurate diagnosis, correct treatment regime, practical prevention and control initiatives to the more specialized areas of research and technology,” she said.

She raised the alarm that though malaria is a global disease, it is endemic in Nigeria. “This affects the gross domestic product (GDP) of the entire nation.”

Dr Tolu Arowolo, National Professional Officer for Malaria, WHO Nigeria, said Nigeria is in the era of malaria control and it is a journey.“ Malaria vector control and personal protection is core intervention with the introduction of long lasting insecticidal nets and malaria vaccine which was very recently recommended by WHO. Though Nigeria is yet to implement single dose premquine as a gametocytocide in plasmodium falciparum (PF) malaria.”

She said it is important to for all to protect against mosquito bites, which is the number one malaria carrier.

“The net is the biggest thing used for the resistance of malaria. It is a better mosquito/malaria prevention. Net should be the weapon against mosquitoes. Pregnant women as well as children should sleep under the net. Parents should introduce the net in early stage of a child’s life and as a family, they should use net, which is cost effective,” she stated. Contributing, Dr Wellington Oyibo, Consultant Microbiologist and Parasitologist, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), said there was 198 million cases of malaria globally in 2013; 584,000 deaths and 216 million clinical cases globally in 2012, 650,000 deaths, mostly in children less than 5years old according to WHO.

Oyibo said malaria is a disease caused by the obligate intracellular protozoa of the genus plasmodium. According to him, early detection and prompt effective treatment to cure the infection can prevent progression to severe disease while with proper management of severe disease, it can prevent death. The objective of malaria treatment is to ensure rapid and long lasting clinical cure and reduction of morbidity including malaria-related anemia. He went further to encourage health practitioners to prevent progression of uncomplicated malaria to severe and potentially fatal disease as well as minimize the chance and rate of development of drug resistance.

He recommended the 3Ts which is test, treat and track, though the testing before treatment is still very low, recognising malaria may no longer be as easy as ‘looking and touching’. “Every suspected malaria case should be confirmed by microscopy prior to treatment and all diagnostic tools must be quality assured across all levels of the health system.”

While institutions should research and innovate on malaria diagnostics, drugs and vaccines, malaria surveillance, capacity building for health workers and other support for malaria control should be intensified. Above all, “sleeping under long lasting insecticidal nets can prevent malaria,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Lagos State Government utilizes a multi-pronged strategy; which include vector control interventions, preventive therapies, diagnostic testing, treatment with quality-assured Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACTs), and strong malaria surveillance to control and eliminate malaria, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris has said.

Idris who made this known over the weekend during a community sensitization campaign to commemorate this year’s World Malaria Day at the Amu Market in Mushin Local Government Area noted that various integrated preventive measures that have been put in place by the State government is geared towards combating malaria.

Highlighting the various integrated preventive measures, the Commissioner explained that Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLINs) have been deployed to communities stressing that nets are also distributed in public health facilities to children who had completed their immunization schedule and also to pregnant women who booked for antenatal care adding also that pregnant women are freely and routinely given in the prescribed manner Sulphadoxine Pyrimethamine (SP) for Intermittent Preventive Treatment of malaria during Ante Natal Clinics.

“Another preventive strategy being deployed in the State is the Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) which is the application of long-acting chemical insecticides on the walls and roofs of houses for the effect of curtailing malaria transmission.  The 6th round in the series of IRS activities was implemented in seven LGAs namely Ojo, Ikorodu, Badagry, Amuwo-Odofin, Kosofe, Epe and Ibeju-Lekki LGAs in 2014 and approximately 650,000 rooms were sprayed,” Idris said.

The Commissioner who was represented at the event by the Deputy Director in charge of Disease Control in the State Ministry of Health, Dr. Rotimi Agbolagorite added that the State Ministry of Health has also implemented Larviciding; which is the application of larvicides to bodies of water to attack mosquito larvae and prevent the development of the larvae to adult mosquitoes in Ikosi-Isheri and Agboyi Ketu local council development areas both within the Kosofe Local Government Area.

Idris stated that the State government has also made available in all public health facilities in the State, Malaria case management which entails the compulsory diagnosis of malaria either by the use of the Rapid Diagnostic Test kits or microscopy and effective treatment with the use of Artemisinin Combination Therapies (ACTs) antimalarials adding that all patients can access the service at no cost.

“It is important that the citizens in the State are equipped with the right information to enable them take appropriate actions regarding malaria control.  To this end, information dissemination is carried out through jingles on the radio, community sensitization and mobilizations activities where information leaflets and fliers are distributed to the citizens”, the Commissioner said.

He posited that the fight against malaria is a collaborative one amongst all relevant stakeholders that requires the commitment of everyone stressing that all residents must all be active in ensuring that their environment is clean and free of any collection of water that can serve as a breeding site for mosquitoes.

“Everyone should sleep inside a Long Lasting Insecticide net every night. Pregnant women should receive Sulphadoxine Pyrimethamine (SP) for Intermittent Preventive Treatment of malaria during ANC clinics. You should also visit the nearest health facility when ill and demand for laboratory testing prior to the administration of antimalarial,” Idris stated.

The Commissioner noted that despite the huge investments in malaria control and the significant impact in the decline in malaria morbidity and mortality, an estimated 198 million cases of malaria occurred globally in 2013 and 584,000 associated deaths were recorded stressing that the statistics were according to the year 2014 World Malaria Report.

He stated that tragically, most cases occurred in Africa while most deaths affects children under five years of age adding that the cosmopolitan nature of Lagos and the abundant distribution of coastal areas encourage the availability of stagnant water resulting in breeding sites for the anopheles mosquito.

Also, while speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of Mushin Local Government Area, Hon. Babajide Bello noted that keeping a healthy environment devoid of breeding sites for mosquitoes is one of the ways Malaria scourge can be fought.

He charged residents of local government as well as market men and women of Amu Market to key into various preventive interventions being put in place by the State government in fighting malaria.

Nepal Earthquake: Teenage Boy Rescued After Five Days

Posted on No comments

A 15-year-old boy has been rescued from the rubble of a building in Kathmandu, five days after an earthquake that killed at least 5,500 people in Nepal. BBC was there:

Pemba Lama told the BBC he survived by drinking water from wet clothes and eating pots of clarified b*tter. He was taken to a field hospital. Meanwhile, bad weather is hampering the delivery of relief to remote villages, a Nepali government spokesman said.

The government has been criticised for its response to the disaster. Outside the capital Kathmandu, the relief effort has relied heavily on helicopters, with mountain roads blocked by landslides triggered by the earthquake.

Laxmi Dhakal, a spokesperson for Nepal’s home ministry, told the BBC that helicopters loaded with rescue workers and relief materials were ready to fly but had been held back by “rainfall and cloudy conditions”.

Sticky tales around Diezani

Posted on No comments

amanze-obi

The witch-hunting that may herald the new order in Nigeria may have begun. Diezani Allison-Madueke, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, may be the first victim. She appears to have been programmed for an ignominious exit from office. She drew attention to this when she blew the lid last week. Her story was that oil cabals were after her. They want to package and sell her as a fraud to Nigeria and the world on account of the running battle she had with them.

The minister had to blurt, out following the recent and ongoing media scrutiny that had been directed at her and her office. Before now, Allison-Madueke had been the butt of dangerous insinuations about the alleged sleaze in the petroleum industry. But she had, at every turn, rebuffed attempts to present her in bad light. However, her detractors seem to have acquired a new impetus, following the outcome of last month’s presidential election. The government that Diezani serves is on its way out. The set-up has created a veritable fertile ground for all manner of mischief.

In recent weeks, for instance, a number of allegations have been woven around her neck. We have been told that $700 million was found in her private residence. But we were not told  who carried out the search as well as when and where the incident took place. Then, since some people have continued to insist that $20 billion was missing from government’s coffers, a brand new story is being woven about the fabled amount. And the story is that $17 billion out of the $20 billion has been traced to a Zenith Bank account and that Diezani has negotiated to return the money to the Federal Government.

Of course, many of us are already familiar with tales that the minister is seeking asylum with some foreign countries and that former Head of State, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar, is negotiating a soft-landing for her. There is, indeed, a diet of tales surrounding the activities of the minister. But she has dismissed all of them as hogwash. She has also gone ahead to tell the world that some powerful operators in the oil industry are behind her travail.

In her bid to move Nigeria’s oil and gas sector away from insitutional and insitutionalised corruption, Diezani said that she stepped on a number of big toes. She is proud to tell us that millions, if not billions  of dollars, have been taken out of the hands of multinational oil companies and their subcontractors and put in the hands of Nigerians through the local content policy. This bold step may not have gone down well  with those who had been feeding fat from the oil sector. Diezani feels satisfied that she is on the right side of history. But her detractors will not let her be. And that appears to be the reason for the renewed critical searchlight being beamed in her direction.

Perhaps, it was in the light of the fictive tales being woven around Diezani and the so-called missing $20 billion that Gen Muhammadu Buhari, the president-elect, is getting unduly excited. Buhari was reported to have said a few days ago that he would inquire into the alleged missing $20 billion when he assumes office. In Buhari’s understanding, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was sacked as the governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for telling the world that $20 billion was missing from the country’s coffers. It would have been surprising to hear Buhari say this if he was not engaged in a one-minded pursuit of his fancies and fantasies. But because he and others like him have programmed their mindset to achieve a given objective,  Buhari’s belief is in line with whatever that objective is. That is why he has chosen to believe what he considers convenient.

But those who do not want to stand truth on its head know that Sanusi was not sacked by anybody. He served out his tenure. He could not qualify for a renewal because he was playing dangerous politics with the office of CBN governor.

As we were saying earlier, the mischievous tales being woven around Diezani have started exciting Buhari. He believes the story that a certain amount of money was recovered from Diezani and that she has negotiated for a refund. That was why Buhari spoke thus a few days ago. “I heard that some people have started  returning money. I will not believe it until I see for myself.” That is the mood  around the president-elect. He appears excited by it all. It is the excitement  that he will take to office. And when he gets there, the story, whatever it is, must be made to fall into place. It will not matter how the story will be hammered into shape. The important thing is that it will be made to fit. And when this becomes the case, we will, very soon, be faced with a situation where fiction will be wearing the toga of fact.

As should be expected, Nigerians have been reacting in various ways to Buhari’s declaration that he will revisit the $20 billion saga. But Jonathan, who has been laughing very broadly with Buhari in recent weeks, must have been surprised that the General is not impressed by his (Jonathan’s) attempt to be seen to be one with the man he wants to handover power to. In spite of the broad smiles, Buhari is still very suspicious of Jonathan and his government. That is why he wrongly accused Jonathan of sacking Sanusi. That is also why he is insisting that Sanusi’s claim over missing $20 billion was true. It is also for  reasons of disdain that Buhari has for Jonathan and his government that he wants to throw aside the probes, inquiries and audits conducted by the Jonathan administration on the alleged missing fund and, instead, institute his own probe or inquiry.

I suspect that one of the strangest things, which the incoming administration will be doing will be to foist some people’s sympathies or mischief on the rest of us. If a certain breed of Nigerians closed their eyes and ears to the facts of the $20 billion alleged to be missing, then the government run by that breed will ensure that the lie it has been holding on to for years is elevated to the level of truth.

It is, indeed, strange that Sanusi’s $20 billion is still an issue in Nigeria. A matter in which a CBN governor muddled up his figures and caused more confusion in the process ought to have been dismissed as the figment of his imagination. But the mumbo jumbo was still picked up from the ashes of disinformation and dusted up so that the truth could be established.

But how did we come about Sanusi’s poisonous tale? The man had, in September 2013, written President Jonathan, alleging that the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had failed to remit the sum of $49.8 billion to the Federation Account over a 19-month period. The letter was supposed to be for the president’s attention and necessary action. But Sanusi had other intentions. That was why he leaked the letter to the Press. Soon, the matter became a virus in our body-politic.

Government would not leave such a grave allegation lying low. The Senate took interest in the matter and referred it to an appropriate committee. When Sanusi appeared before the Senate Committee, which was inquiring into his allegation, he told the committee that the missing figure was $12 billion instead. He was later to change the figure to $19.8 billion and then to  $20 billion. Even though Sanusi contradicted himself to no end, those whose minds were closed to the facts of the matter insisted that he was right.

It was for this reason that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Minister of Finance, had to call for a forensic audit on the matter. A reputable audit firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers has since carried out an audit of NNPC’s account and came up with the verdict that no money was missing. But this verdict does not appear to have impressed Buhari and his gang.  It did not conform with what they have chosen to believe. That is why Buhari wants to institute his own probe. He and his cohorts want to be told what they want to hear.

What should we then expect in the days to come? Compulsive and forced lies? Buhari may do well to spare himself the infamy of engaging in witch-hunting. There are many issues of national importance that should engage his attention. Vendetta and bad blood will only lead to a blind alley.

Singles: 4 Things You Must Do “Personally” Before Saying I Do!

Posted on No comments

Man-pursuing-woman-300x300

Marriage is a beautiful thing when done right. Do some prep work before you say, “I do.” It will set a good foundation on which to build a strong satisfying married. It definitely takes time and energy but its well worth it. Your strong foundation going into married will be invaluable.

Here are 4 great points for Marriage Preparation:

1. Release the baggage accumulated through the years.

If you’re not any good for yourself, you won’t be good for anyone else. When you carry around the heavy weight of baggage, when a partner comes along you are asking them to carry your baggage with you. Now, they may be willing to help you unpack the heavy bags. Yet, how much better would it be if there were no bags of discontent, anger, jealously, and hurt to unpack because they have already been dealt with.

2. Become separate, unique, and whole all by yourself.

Dig deep to discover your purpose. Dig deep to rest in your uniqueness. Replace the garbage talk that says you are not enough and you need someone to complete you. You are enough. A mate comes along and you share your lives together. Two complete people who create something magnificent together.

3. Read every good book you can find on having a prosperous marriage.

Authors like Dr. Myles Munroe, Willard Harley, Gary Smalley, and of course Black and Marriage with Kids have awesome marriage enrichment books. Reading now allows you to begin storing tools in your marriage toolbox. It is beneficial to have some tools to work with before you get married.

Recognize and receive the gift God has for you. If he or she is not your gift keep it moving. People are not to be messed over or tried out.

4. Receive the gift God presents to you. A gift is a beautiful thing.

However, a gift does you no good if you don’t receive it. Know what your gift is supposed to look like, so you will recognize it when it arrives. For example: if you have been waiting on a blue 10 speed bike and a yellow 3 speed with a granny basket on the front shows up, you know that 3 speed is not your bike. It’s not your gift to accept, so don’t mess over it or try it out.

Gas supply to facilitate addition of 560MW of additional generation capacity into the grid

untitled

Seven Energy International Limited (“Seven Energy”), the indigenous Nigerian integrated gas Company has commenced the supply of gas to the 560 MW Calabar National Integrated Power Project (“NIPP”). The commercial delivery of gas to Calabar NIPP commenced in March 2015, and is being executed through Accugas, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Seven Energy. When operating at full capacity Calabar NIPP will increase national power generation by over 10%.

Gas is being supplied to the power plant from Seven Energy’s Uquo Gas Processing Facility in Akwa Ibom State through the Seven Energy pipeline network. The gas supply will enable the power plant to complete commissioning and start delivering electricity into the national grid.

Commenting on the achievement, Phillip Ihenacho, Chief Executive Officer, Seven Energy, said; “Delivering a cost effective and reliable gas supply is critical to providing sustainable power supply into the national grid to meet the government’s reform objectives and to facilitate industrial development. I am delighted that our ability to deliver an indigenous gas solution, from end to end is now being recognised by a broad range of industrial and power sector customers. Not only will the gas we supply drive enhanced power generation, but when combined with improvements in transmission and distribution it will also facilitate industrial and commercial developments which will have a far reaching impact throughout the community, stimulating industry and generating employment as a result.”

Steve Tierney, Managing Director, Accugas said “The Calabar NIPP is a major power plant in Calabar and a further endorsement of the quality and reliability of our services. Our strong capability across the region with ownership of gas reserves and pipeline infrastructure have enabled us to commercialise our gas assets, delivering a solution that the market has been demanding for many years. We are ready and look forward to adding more customers to our network across the South East of Nigeria, bringing affordable and reliable gas to a wider audience.”

Seven Energy has continued to champion an industrial gas revolution through the development and production of natural gas, and, critically, its commercialisation through investment in processing and distribution infrastructure, where the Company has invested over $1 billion in the south east region of the Niger Delta in the last 5 years.

With significant capacity built into its distribution infrastructure, the Company is capable of providing a long-term supply of gas to additional off takers for power generation and for local industry.

Since the commissioning of the Uquo Gas Processing Facility in 2014, Seven Energy has begun the supply of gas to other off takers such as the Ibom Power Company, Notore Chemical Industries Limited and the United Cement Company of Nigeria, also in Calabar.

Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, has described the rescue of 200 girls and 93 women by the military from Boko Haram hideout as a heart warming development.

Shettima, in his first reaction yesterday, in a statement by his spokesman, Isa Umar Gusau, said the military operation was gratifying whether or not those rescued were Chibok schoolgirls abducted over a year ago.

“The lives, safety and well-being of all citizens of Borno are of equal importance to me and as such, we celebrate the news about the rescue with so much excitement in a manner he would celebrate when the military succeeds in freeing the Chibok schoolgirls,” he said. The governor said he was full of excitement and gratitude to God over the development, adding that the military deserved commendation by all. “I was so full of excitement, gratitude to God almighty and commendation to our gallant Armed Forces for this great humanitarian feat. For me, the lives, safety and welfare of all citizens of Borno State are of equal importance,” he stated.

Governor Shettima described the rescued women and girls as daughters, sisters and mothers, whose lives were important, not just to their loved ones, but also to him as Borno governor, with a mandate to cater for the welfare and all citizens.

He said the Chibok girls’ abduction attracted national and international outrage, “because of the peculiar manner in which they were kidnapped,” adding that the incident has redefined the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria.

“The Chibok schoolgirls are very dear to my heart because they were kidnapped, while they were in school. Their kidnap is very symbolic because their kidnappers are opposed to western education especially female education.

Support me to fight corruption, Buhari tells National Assembly

Posted on No comments

800x500xPIC.-6.-GEN.-MUHAMMADU-BUHARI.jpg.pagespeed.ic.5SxXz9ArvT

From ADETUTU FOLASADE-KOYI, Abuja

The President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, appealed to the incoming National Assembly to support him in his fight against corruption.

Buhari made the call when he addressed a joint session of the re-elected and fresh members of the two chambers of the National Assembly, who are currently undergoing a one-week induction programme organised by the National Institute for Legislative Studies in Abuja.

He stressed the need for the executive and the legislature to collaborate on restructuring of the public sector and the budgeting process to collectively tackle the menace of high recurrent expenditure at the expense of capital and human development.

His word: “I am delighted to say that we stand on the threshold of history. For the first time in our post-independence history, power is going to be transferred from an incumbent ruling party to an opposition party.

“For a president to be successful in addressing community development and general welfare of the various people of the country, he or she would benefit from working closely and in harmony with the legislative arm of government. I, therefore, commit myself to working with the legislature as development partners motivated by the desire to deliver good governance.

“Distinguished elected members of the 8th National Assembly, we are all aware of the challenges our dear nation has been facing and will continue to do so in the near future. These daunting challenges include, general insecurity and insurgency that has caused extreme human hardship and destruction of lives; livelihoods that may take us over a decade to rebuild across most of the North-East and some parts of the North- West of the country

“Devastation and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta area which must be attended to. Decline in revenues due to fall in oil prices, which pose a threat to Government’s capacity to deliver on reconstruction of devastated areas and the new government development agenda; endemic corruption, which has crippled human and infrastructure development for decades.

“Poor provision of power supply which has had a crippling effect on development of small businesses and indeed, the wider economy; de-industrialisation for the past three decades leading to closure of many industries and migration of many to other African countries.”

Xenophobic Attacks Should Challenge Govt. To Make The Country Better

Xenophobia-SA

Former Provost Marshal of the Nigerian Army, Brig. General Idada Ikpomnwen, yesterday, tasked the Nigerian government on making the country habitable, rather than rather than blame the South African government for xenophobic attacks on foreigners.

He argued that if the country was a great place to live, Nigerians would not seek greener pastures anywhere else in the world.

“We must begin to think of how to create jobs, make good use of our resources and make this nation great. That is the challenge before the Federal Government and not the action of South Africans,” he said.

Idada, however, berated South Africans over the attacks gainst their African brothers.

From GEORGE ONYEJIUWA, Owerri

Members of the Imo State House of Assembly, yesterday, in plenary, unanimously approved a re-ordered supplementary budget of N23,752,610,557 for the year ended 2014.

Raising the motion before her colleagues, the Majority Leader of the House and member representing Ahiazu Mbaise state constituency, Mrs. Adaku Ihuoma, urged members of the House to give accelerated passage to the supplementary budget, as this would accord the executive the necessary support in carrying out its duties in the interest of the people of the state.

This was just as the House amended the law establishing the proposed Imo Turkish University and re-named it Imo State Claretian University, Onuimo-Okigwe, following lack of commitment by the Turkish stakeholders, who had earlier indicated interest in the university project.

Contributing to the amendment bill, the member representing Isu state constituency, Ikenna Emeh, said the amendment in the name of the proposed institution became necessary due to alleged non-commitment of the Turkish stakeholders, who were supposed partners in the establishment of the institution. He stated that the order of the Claretian missionary had shown enough interest in partnering with the state government towards ensuring that the university was established.

The House also amended the law establishing the Imo State College of Education (Technical) to become the Imo State College of Education, Ihitte-Uboma.

Contributing to the bill, the member for Isiala Mbano state constituency, Simeon Iwunze, explained to the House that the amendment to the bill establishing the institution would give it a wider scope, both in admission and in attracting the necessary logistics needed for its sustainability.

From DOM EKPUNOBI, Onitsha

The Senatorial candidate of the Mega Progressive Peoples Party (MPPP) in the April 28 senatorial election for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Chris Ekweozoh, has taken Uche Ekwunife of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to court over her declaration as winner of the election.

Joined in the suit are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Returning Officer in the 2015 senatorial election for Anambra Central Senatorial District.

In his petition filed at the election tribunal sitting in Anambra State, Ekweozoh, a lawyer, stated that the election in which Ekwunife was declared winner, was invalid by reason of alleged corrupt practices and non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010, as amended, adding that they affected the outcome of the election. In his eight-paragraph affidavit in support of the claim, Ekweozoh, insisted that Ekwunife was not duly elected by majority of lawful votes cast at the election.

He alleged that INEC did not release the identification tag of his agents in that election, adding that the commission erroneously released his agent’s tag to one Evang Sam Amdika, who was not known to him. The MPPP senatorial candidate stated that his polling unit and collation agents were not allowed to participate in the election and consequently, he was left without agents in the election. Also he deposed that the agents of the 1st and 2nd respondents with the agents of the 3rd respondent allegedly falsified the results of the votes cast, which the PDP candidate was declared winner of the election.

Ayodele-Fayose

From GODWIN TSA, Abuja

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, yesterday withdrew the suit seeking to stop the 19 All Progressives Congress (APC) members of the state House of House from impeaching him and his Deputy, Kolapo Olusola.

In the suit, which was struck out by Justice Ahmed Mohammed, the plaintiffs, including speaker of the House of Assembly (described as being occupied by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) factional Speaker, Olugbemi Joseph Dele); Ekiti State House of Assembly, Fayose and Olusola through their counsel, Ahmed Raji (SAN), had approached the court seeking to stop impeachment moves against the governor.

When the matter was called for hearing yesterday, counsel to the plaintiffs, Raji, informed the court of his client’s intention to withdraw the case.

The plaintiff’s counsel did not give reasons for the withdrawal, but Daily Sun gathered it was to allow them prosecute a fresh suit pending before another court presided over by Justice Evoh Chukwu.
