The governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje, on Saturday promised to make Badagry the industrial hub of West Africa.

Speaking at a campaign rally, Agbaje lamented that the axis has been short-changed in terms of development.

“I observed that Badagry has been shortchanged over the years in Lagos state.

“I want you all to know that government is for all, Badagry inclusive. There is need to look at the teeming youths because many of them are without jobs.” he said, adding that the only way the youths could have jobs was by creating industries in Badagry.

“We know that Badagry has been placed in a position where it can become a hub for exploits,” he said.

Agbaje said he was overwhelmed by the crowd that turned out to receive him. He promised not to let them down if elected.

‘Why I Donated My Life Savings To Buhari’ Kebbi Grandma Speaks

Posted on No comments

1

Malama Fatima Talle-Tara waited all day to meet General Buhari. “I was excited,” she says

Malama Fati Ibrahim Talle-Tara, 80, is a popular food vendor in Koko, Koko/Besse Local Government Area of Kebbi State. She famously offered her life savings to the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, retired General Muhammadu Buhari for his campaign when he visited the state.

Weekly Trust had a chat with her. Excerpts:

Weekly Trust: What motivated you to offer your life savings to General Buhari for his campaign?

Fati Ibrahim Talle-Tara: The first time Buhari ventured into politics and contested, he lost. The second and third time, too, he lost but he appealed to us to be patient. This will be the fourth time Buhari will contest. It is his patriotism, humility and honesty that make me support him. As I speak to you, I have assigned one of my sons to Kano to produce 300,000 posters for Buhari’s campaign. The posters are in Jega right now, ready for distribution.

WT: How much money have you spent campaigning on behalf of General Buhari?

Talle-Tara: All my life savings during the times he has contested. There was a time I spent N2 million. I spend my money campaigning for him because everybody knows that he doesn’t have money to do so. I generate the money mostly from savings from my food-selling business which I’ve been doing for decades. It’s my life savings.

WT: How will you cope now that you’ve donated all your savings?

Talle-Tara: How much is the money? Compared to the good governance we will get, it’s nothing, really.

WT: How did General Buhari receive you when you met him at the airport?

Talle-Tara: I waited the whole day at the airport. I met him physically that day for the first time in my life and we greeted warmly. I felt fulfilled. He was also excited when we met.

Interestingly, my fathers’ name is Buhari, too. So, I will do everything for him like I would for my father. Moreover, General Buhari is sincere and patriotic.

When he landed at the airport, he said they should inform Sokoto State Governor Magatakarda Wamakko to take care of my needs.

WT: Did Governor Wamakko do so, as requested?

Talle-Tara: Yes, I was in Sokoto with my people last Saturday and we were lodged in one of the big hotels. He (Wamakko) asked me to make any request. I said all I need is for him to continue his good work and support good governance in Nigeria. He gave me N1million, one bale of wrappers and two Hajj seats, one for me and one for my daughter Umma whose husband died and left with seven children.

WT: How would you feel if the change you expect doesn’t come?

Talle-Tara: I will continue to use my money to campaign for good governance in Nigeria and I will never regret doing that. We have trust in God that this time around we will have that change that we are clamouring for. Even if we lose this election, we will still consider ourselves winners because we know that we lost not because we did not win.

WT: What contribution are you making towards credible, violence-free and credible elections?

Talle-Tara: I have commissioned religious scholars within my available resources to pray every day for Nigeria. We have faith in God, there won’t be any crisis.

WT: What is your dream for Nigeria?

Talle-Tara: My dream is to see a day that Buhari will win the election and be sworn into office. That day, I will slaughter a cow, cook plenty food and throw a big party. I have told them that I will declare free food at my shop for everybody including those in the town and villages to come and celebrate.

WT: Would you describe yourself as a politician?

Talle-Tara: My late son and I ventured into politics when Buhari did. I am into politics just to support Buhari.

WT: Are you married?

Talle-Tara: I’m a widow. My husband died and left me with 15 children and 15 grandchildren, and most of them are the ones helping me right now in my business place. I’m actually from Jega. It’s marriage that brought me to Koko.

BY GILBERT EKEZIE

Ahead preparation for the February 2015 General Election, the Nigerian Immigrations Service, Lagos State Command has arrested two Ghanaian immigrants, Abubakar Yussuf 50, and Alli Abubakar 23, for illegally acquiring Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVC).

Making the revelation in Lagos on Thursday, during the meeting of ECOWAS Community in Nigeria, Comptroller of Immigration, Lagos State Command, Justina Ahmadu said the arrest was made by officers from the intelligence units of the Service across the state.

According to her, the culprits went to acquire National Identity cards at the Eti- Osa Local Government in Lagos and were caught after interrogation.

“They have already acquired the voter’s cards with a false claim that they are from Kano State. But when they told our men at the local Government that they are Nigerians from Kano State, the officers wanted to know the actual town and village they came from, but they could not provide an answer. As a result, they were arrested.”

Ahmadu added that when the suspects were put under a thorough interrogation, that they later confessed that they are Ghanaians. “It was thereafter we detained them’’,she stated.

The Comptroller advised the ECOWAS Community in Nigeria not to dabble into national issues in their host countries , especially the forthcoming elections. “You should not participate in the election because you are not Nigerians, no matter how many years you have lived here. I will not take it light with anyone that violates the Nigerian Immigration rules. So, you should sensitize your members.”

Responding, President of National Association of Ghanaian Communities in Nigeria, Mr Frank Ekow Quaye condemned the action of his fellow countrymen. He advised Ghanaians and nationals of other ECOWAS Communities to steer clear of political activities in Nigeria.

Why The North Will Vote Jonathan Again – PDP

Posted on No comments

FROM LEFT: GOV. ISA YUGUDA OF BAUCHI STATE; PDP NATIONAL CHAIRMAN ADAMU MUAZU; PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN; SENATE PRESIDENT DAVID MARK AND GOV.IBRAHIM DANKWAMBO OF GOMBE, AT THE PDP RALLY IN BAUCHI ON SATURDAY (29/3/14).

President Goodluck Jonathan will beat the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari in the north, come February 14, 2015.

This was the assertion of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which noted that President Jonathan’s soaring popularity among the voting population across the country is an evidence.

Speaking through its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, in a statement, Saturday, the party said President Jonathan will beat Buhari with more than two-third of the total votes cast, as well as the required 25 percent in all the states of the federation.

Metuh noted that this was not only because the PDP controls 12 out of the 19 states of the region, but also because the citizens are pleased with the numerous development projects he executed in the region.

The PDP said the various projects and appointments in the north have placed Jonathan ahead of Buhari in the mind of the people of the north, especially due to the fact that the APC presidential candidate never executed any project in the region when he was head of state and has so far failed to articulate an acceptable blue-print for development.

“Indeed, Nigerians in the north are eager to re-elect President Goodluck Jonathan come February 14, 2015. Voters in the region appreciate the direct positive impact of the numerous development projects executed by the Jonathan administration in all sectors of life.

“They appreciate the fact that recognizing that agriculture is the mainstay of the northern economy, President Jonathan ensured that out of the 2.7 million direct farm jobs achieved by his administration, over 2 million are in the north.

“They appreciate the fact that President Jonathan established the e-wallet system, which eliminated the corruption in the distribution of fertilizer and other farmputs, making the products directly accessible to millions of farmers in the region thereby boosting their productivity. They appreciate the fact that silos are brimming and food pyramids are returning in the north.

“In education, President Jonathan’s imprint in the north remains indelible. Today, the once relegated Almajiri boys can now go to school following the establishment of the Almajiri System of Education, the first of its kind, with over 150 special schools already built, while others are nearing completion, a noble idea, General Buhari never thought of when he was head of state.

“Also, out of the 14 new universities established by President Jonathan, 9 are located in the northern states thereby ensuring that all states of the region have a federal university. This is in addition to the establishment of new secondary schools and training of teachers for quality education in the region.

“Furthermore our citizens in the north are happy with President Jonathan for his efforts in tackling desertification in the region especially with the establish of more than 80 km of 15–row Green Belt in addition to the Presidential Initiative on Afforestation in Kano and 10 other Northern States”.

Another reason cited by the PDP was the increased attention given to the health needs of the region, especially the interventions towards polio eradication and treatment of VVF among others.

The party also noted that roads in the region, that have been abandoned for long have received serious attention under Jonathan, citing the Kano-Maiduguri highway, the longest stretch in the country.

Other projects cited by the party include revitalization of the railways, especially the rehabilitation of the Minna-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano narrow gauge, the Markurdi-Lafia-Kuru-Bauchi-Gombe-Ashaka-Maiduguri line and the branch line from Kafanchan to Kaduna, the dredging of the River Niger from Lokoja to Baro in Niger State, the acceleration of work on the Geregu power station, the 700MW Zungeru Hydro-Power, the ‎3,050MW Mambilla Hydro-Power and various dam projects including the Kashimbila Multipurpose Dam, which is being built to contain flood from Lake Nyos in Cameroon.

Real Madrid Extend La Liga Lead after Comeback Win Over Sociedad

Posted on No comments

Real Madrid came back from a goal down to beat Real Sociedad 4-1 and surge clear at the summit of the La Liga standings.

James Rodriguez and Sergio Ramos both scored to pull Carlo Anceloti’s side back from a 1st-minute Aritz Elustondo strike before Karim Benzema twice scored in the second period to wrap up victory and send the host four points clear of Bacelona, who host Villarreal on Sunday.

David Moyes’ Sociedad have now suffered two defeats in their last six league outings and are 11th in the table, six points clear of the drop zone.

Sociedad drew the first blood with an Aritz Elustondo headed goal after only 38 seconds but James Rodriguez planted home an excellent header from a Marcelo cross to restore parity in the 3rd minute.

The Los Blancos, who were without the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo, pushed for a lead goal with Gareth Bale twice going close before Sergio Ramos struck five minutes to the break. The Spaniard latched on to a loose ball in the 18 yard to smash in his sixth goal of the campaign.

Bale threw caution to the wind again before the break with the goal yawning for the ball before eventually turning provider for Karim Benzema in the 51st minute, setting up the Frenchman who found the bottom corner with his left-foot effort.

The third goal added bite to the Spanish league leaders’ game and they were chewing a fourth goal 25 minutes later, when Benzema received Isco’s pass to complete his brace, poking into the top corner. Benzema has now scored against Sociedad in their last four meetings and boats of 17 goals in all competitions.

She urged the people of Anambra to come out en masse to vote the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidates for continuity.

“I’m not here to run down anybody, but to thank you people for the support and mandate you gave to me in the last National Assembly election. But for you it won’t have been possible. ‘The Ease With Which Arms, Ammunitions Are Acquired Is A Matter Of Serious Concern’

Posted on No comments

Isa-YugudaGovernor of Bauchi State, Malam Isa Yuguda, has expressed concern over the proliferation of small arms and light weapons across the country, saying the impunity in killing of innocent lives is becoming alarming.

The governor stated this on Thursday at a two-day stakeholders sensitisation forum on the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria for the North-East zone titled, ‘Ballot Without Bullet’ held at the Zaranda Hotel, Bauchi.

The Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons, inaugurated by President Goodluck Jonathan on April 23, 2013, is the front leader in Nigeria’s effort to stem the tide of illicit arms across the country.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alh. Mahmood Maijama’a, Gov. Yuguda said the state government was concerned with the ugly trend, whereby, arms were being smuggled into the country.

“The current security challenges in the northern part of the country call for a holistic and pragmatic approach to be addressed.

“The ease with which arms and ammunition are acquired and used to maim and kill innocent people is a matter of serious concern to the Bauchi State Government”, Yuguda noted.

The governor pointed out that there seemed to be a network in the smuggling of arms.

He added, “The proliferation and use of illicit small arms and light weapons by undesirable elements cut across the geo-political zones of the country.

“Indeed, there appears to be an underground network which facilitates the proliferation of these dangerous weapons”.

Over 14,000 PVCs snatched by hoodlums in Rivers

Posted on No comments

Rotimi-Amaechi

FROM TONY JOHN, PORT HARCOURT

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that over 14,000 Permanent Voters’ Cards have been snatched from officials of the Commission by hoodlums in Rivers State.

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs. Gesila Khan, disclosed this yesterday, to journalists in Port Harcourt.

According to her, some of the cards were stolen from local government collection centres, where the PVCs were deposited to enable the rightful owners have free access to them at the close of the collection exercise by INEC.

Also, Khan stated that over 50,000 PVCs would be distributed to the rightful owners in two weeks before the general election, noting that over 80 per cent of the registered voters in the state had collected their PVCs.

Speaking further, the INEC resident told the newsmen that her office had received 2,990,056 PVCs and distributed 1,869,379.

The REC, who expressed dismay at the action of the hoodlums, expressed dismay that State recorded one of the highest cases of stolen PVCs in the country.

“I am appealing to Rivers people because we have lost a lot of cards. We have lost more than 14,000 PVCs and it is one of the highest figures in the federation.

“All the cards that were snatched are useless and meaningless because we are going to use a new system called card readers. Your card readers are just like ATM cards. You take it there and they slot it into the card reader to confirm if it is yours before you are allowed to vote”.

Khan emphasised: “So, if you go there with another person’s voter’s card, it is meaningless. So, I am advising those with other peoples’ cards to return them to the local government offices so that the rightful owners can collect them, so that they can participate in the general election.

“Polling officer will on the presentation of the PVC by an electorate be slotted into the card reader to confirm if it belongs to you. The next stage is the confirmation of your finger prints by the card reader before you are allowed to vote. If you go to the polling booth with someone else’s voters’ card, you would not be able to vote because each card is unique and can only be authenticated by the real owner. The PVCs are meaningless to those who have stolen them”.

He stressed: “The PVCs are beyond registration; the cards are beyond voting. People now use these cards in the banks as a means of identifying themselves. All those who snatched these cards should please take them to the designated collection centres so that we can give them to the rightful owners so that the rightful owners can use them during the elections to perform their legitimate civic duties”.

As Akwa Ibom PDP Chair readies party for electoral triumphs

Posted on No comments

PDP-new-1

BY OKON NSE OKON

Obong Paul Ekpo is an experienced administrator, a leader of men who has given himself a big task in Akwa Ibom State, namely, to win all the elections for the PDP. As chairman of the ruling party in the state, Ekpo is determined to prove James George Janos, better known by his stage name, Jesse Ventura, wrong. Unlike Ventura, he firmly believes that political parties, in particular, the PDP in Akwa Ibom State, are veritable platforms for development, for delivery of democracy dividends to the people and are, therefore, the solution not the problem of the system.

Ventura, an Independent and former professional wrestler who served as the 38th Governor of Minnesota from 1999 to 2003, does not like political parties because he thinks they are the problem rather than the solution. He once said of the two main political parties in the United States: “I will not be a Democrat or a Republican. They are the problem, not the solution. We need to abolish political parties in this country.

To be fair to Ventura, this is a feeling many people sometimes get about political parties. Or, who hasn’t once or twice felt that the two parties in Nigeria, the PDP and the APC, rather than mitigate the nation’s political problems tend, really, to aggravate them through the aggressive and oft-violent ways they seek power and privileges? However, Ekpo finds a worthy ally in David Alan Mamet, an American playwright and essayist, who posits that “the Founders (of the American system) recognized that government is quite literally a necessary evil, that there must be opposition, between its various branches, and between political parties, for these are the only ways to temper the individual’s greed for power and the electorates’ desires for peace by submission to coercion or blandishment.”

In other words, political parties as organised groups of people with similar political aims and opinions, seeking to influence public policy by getting their candidates elected to public office, are necessary to moderate the competition for power that inevitably arises between groups or even within groups, for the control of society. In that case, the question, then, becomes, not whether political parties should be but how they ought to be.

Like America, Nigeria has two main political parties, the PDP and APC. The PDP has been the ruling party at the centre and in most of the states in the past 16 years. The fortunes of its state chapters have changed over the same period too, with the degree of such changes differing from state to state. For instance, in Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Ogun, Edo and Ekiti States, it lost power to the opposition APC formerly AC but has regained power in Ekiti. It also lost power to APGA in Imo State. But, in places like Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Ebonyi, Niger, Jigawa, Bayelsa, Delta, Benue States, among others, PDP has remained the party to beat since the inception of this democratic dispensation.

Among the state chapters, Akwa Ibom is easily the strongest. This is evident in the outstanding performance of the state governor and leader of the party in the state Obong Godswill Akpabio, whose development programme as governor is essentially anchored on PDP manifesto. The party has even become stronger in the state since the emergence of Obong Ekpo as the state party chairman in October last year.

On October 8 last year, the Integration Committee of the party, which met with Akwa Ibom stakeholders in Abuja, confirmed Ekpo as the authentic chairman of the PDP. In a meeting attended by representatives of various interest groups in the state at the Legacy House, Abuja, at the instance of the Integration Committee, Ekpo got the official nod to chair the party in Akwa Ibom thereby bringing to an end the intrigues and bad blood that had dogged his election in a transparent process earlier carried out in Uyo.

In attendance at the reconciliation meeting were former Governor Obong Victor Attah, Deputy Governor Lady Valerie Ebe, Obong Bassey Albert (OBA), Obong Umana O. Umana, Obong Nsima Ekere, BOT members Atuekong Don Etiebet, Senator Ibokessien, Senator Effiong Bob, Senator Ita Enang, Senator Helen Esuene, Prince Uwem Ita Etuk and a member of the National Caucus, Distinguished Senator Anietie Okon. Also in attendance were Hon. Nse Ekpenyong, Barr. Ibanga Akpabio and a number of other state PDP stakeholders.

At the meeting, Ekpo presented a video CD of the State Congress to prove that he was legally and legitimately elected as Chairman of the authentic Akwa Ibom PDP executive committee. Ekpo’s methodical effort to establish the validity of his election won him the sympathy and approval of many of the stakeholders who stridently condemned Chief Etiebet’s petition against the process that led to Ekpo’s emergence, describing it as an attempt to blackmail the party and bring disaffection within its ranks in the build-up to this year’s general elections. In his speech, a triumphant Ekpo promised to lead the state PDP aright, to put it on a sound footing so it could continue to drive the uncommon transformation, which has been going on in Akwa Ibom State in the past eight years under Chief Godswill Akpabio, a party loyalist to the core. He also pledged to ensure that the next dispensation in the state continues from where Akpabio will stop.

I will Lead the Akwa Ibom PDP and ensure total success for the party based on the uncommon transformation strides of Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio, which has put Akwa Ibom PDP in final triumph over the opposition…,” Ekpo declared.

Thereafter, Obong Ekpo was officially recognized as the authentic chairman of the Akwa Ibom PDP by the Chairman of the Integration Committee, Senator Iya Abubakar. An elated Abubakar commended the people of the state for their maturity in handling the brief crisis and asked all to join hands with Chief Akpabio to make PDP win all the elections both in the state and at the centre this February.

Since his emergence as the state party chairman, Ekpo has worked tirelessly to achieve party cohesion so that the stakeholders can work as a team to ensure victory for the party in all the elections in the state come February 14 this year and subsequently. Speaking at the inauguration of the campaign councils at the party headquarters in Uyo early this January, Ekpo said:

“Our great party is one united, strong family. We are our brother’s keeper. That is why as soon as the nominations were over, the party caucus constituted three different reconciliation committees for each of the three Senatorial districts and one for the centre to reconcile all aggrieved PDP aspirants. We thank all of you who took advantage of that platform to sort your differences and join hands with those who won to work for the electoral victory of party in the February 2015 General elections. We encourage all other party members who were aggrieved in whatever form to embrace the spirit of reconciliation and hand of full reintegration the party handsomely offers.”

He praised Governor Akpabio for his outstanding performance as governor and assured him that he had established a template that would guide all future governors of the state.

“Your visionary and purposeful leadership of the party in the state,” he said to the governor, “has sufficiently demonstrated that your soul is aflame with determination to ensure a smooth transition from your administration to yet another rewarding government for our people.

A former commissioner for local governments and chieftaincy matters and a passionate party man who resigned to contest the party chairmanship, Ekpo believes that the sky is the starting point yet for the PDP in Akwa Ibom State, if only the party faithful would work together to deliver victories to the party at the polls come this February 14 and 28. He said: “Today, we stand on the edge of a new frontier. The new frontier of which I speak is not a set of expectations we have of government. It is a set of challenges that demands all of us, I mean all of us, to live up to the task ahead of us next month. We must deliver all our units, all our wards, and all our LGAs and give PDP landslide electoral victory in all the positions.” …In politics, mobilization of masses to vote is the demand of victory at the polls,” he surmised.

Presidential Debate: APC’s Refusal To Participate In Presidential Debate ‘Great Disappointment’ – Chekwas Okorie

Posted on No comments

Chekwaspresidential candidate of the United Progressives Party, Chekwas Okorie, Muhamadu Buhari, presidential debate, All Progressives Congress

The presidential candidate of the United Progressives Party, UPP, Chekwas Okorie, has pleaded with his All Progressives Congress counterpart, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to reconsider his decision not to attend the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria-organized presidential debate.

The APC Presidential Campaign Organisation had announced Thursday that its candidate would not participate in the debate organized by the BON because most of its members are sympathetic to PDP’s cause.

The presidential debate has been slated for February 8, 2015 from 7-9P.M and will be aired live on AIT, NTA, TV Continental and Silverbird TV.

However, faulting Mr. Buhari’s decision to shun the debate, which saw him paired with the presidential candidates of the APC, PDP (Goodluck Jonathan) and KOWA (Comfort Oluremi Sonaiya), Mr. Okorie in a statement Friday said: “The news that the APC presidential candidate, General Buhari, will not participate in the scheduled debates is a great disappointment”.

The UPP presidential candidate said he was looking forward to the debate because “the match-up was consistent with independent poling around the country that identified President Jonathan’s PDP, General Buhari’s APC, and Chief Okorie’s UPP as the three most serious contenders in the highly anticipated general elections to choose Nigeria’s next president for a four-year term”.

He, therefore, said he did not find the rationale given by the APC for withdrawing from the debates convincing.

“My Vice Presidential candidate, Barrister Bello Umar (SAN) and I are ready for the debates. I urge my compatriot, General Buhari, to reject his advisors’ voices and show up for the debates. That is what the nation and the international community expect of him”, Mr. Okorie added.

Buhari not out of presidential debate yet – Alimi

Alimi

Chairman of the Working Committee of the Nigerian Elections Debate Group (NEDG), Aremo Taiwo Alimi, has said that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), has not written the NEDG that he will not be participating in the presidential debate slated for February 8.

Alimi spoke against the background of media reports credited to the Director, Media and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, Mallam Garba Shehu that Buhari would not participate in the presidential debate as a result of bias on the part of the bodies comprising the NEDG.

But in this interview with AIDOGHIE PAULINUS in Abuja, Alimi said Shehu’s statement does not depict the mindset of Buhari. Excerpts…

How is the preparation for the forthcoming presidential debate?

The NEDG has really completed all plans for the 2015 presidential debates that will feature presidential candidates and vice presidential candidates. The first group is going to be on February 1, which is Sunday and will start at 12 noon. The first session is from 12 to 2pm where we will have five vice presidential candidates featuring, and the next will be 3 to 5pm where we will have another five vice presidential candidates featuring. And the last session for the day is slated for 7 to 9pm where four vice presidential candidates will feature. That is the plan so far and we are using the International Conference Centre, Abuja, as the venue for both the vice presidential candidates debate and the presidential candidates which is on February 8.

Have you contacted all the candidates?

We as NEDG, we have integrity, we have trust, we have professionalism and we have experience. We have made contact with all the 14 political parties approved by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to feature presidential candidates and we always go by the INEC rules and INEC approval. We have made contact with all of them and we are happy to say that there is not one of the 14 political parties that has written to NEDG that they will not participate. We have written to them, we submitted rules and everything to them and we expect all of them to participate.

Are they not supposed to write letters of acceptance?

They are supposed to give letters back to us. For instance, whether it is in 2003, 2007, or 2011, those who don’t want to participate would write us. They have written us letters that their vice presidential candidate is hospitalised and would not be able to attend or their presidential candidate is sick like we had in 2011. So, we then felt that is the normal thing. If you are going to be a leader of a country like Nigeria and an organisation that is the most credible, the most powerful elections debate group in Nigeria and Africa, then, you would respond to their formal letter and notice whether you want to come or not and give your reasons. So far, we have not received any letter from any of the 14 that they will not participate in the elections debate of NEDG.

As the founding chairman of the NEDG, would you say past debates have helped in making our elections a worthwhile venture?

First and foremost, through the elections debate by the NEDG, it has helped tremendously since 2003 when we had the first one; 2007, 2011 and it is going to help in 2015 to help the average voter finally make their decision on whom to vote for after watching or listening to the debate by NEDG. What we have had is that through the debates in the past few years, Nigerian electorate have always used the debates to finally determine who they will vote for after listening to them on the platform of NEDG because we have received a lot of submissions by Nigerian electorate that they have not gained anything from political campaigns by political parties, that they have always been watching them in a near theatre type of performance. But through the debate of NEDG, they have listened and watched them and they used it to make up their minds to vote properly on voting day what we call informed choices on voting day.

Also, through our debates, especially presidential, it has always helped to minimize violence seriously in Nigeria on voting day. And the security people have commended us for that, that when Nigerians and those who are followers of politicians watch the debates and they see the candidates shaking hands when they arrive on the rostrum, embracing themselves, those followers then say why are we fighting ourselves about these candidates, see the way they are happy to see one another, that on voting day, we are not going to do any violence at all. And that has helped tremendously because many of them don’t know that they can really be as friendly with one another as they see them on television live.

The Director, Media and Publicity, APC Presidential Campaign Organisation, has said the party’s presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), would not participate in the debate, alleging bias on the part of NEDG. How do you see this development?

First, the gentleman you called Director of Media and Publicity for APC does not understand the difference between medium and organising. The medium and the organiser are different. As a founding chairman, I challenge him if he has anything that has to do that queries my own integrity, trust and professionalism in all my professional life. Therefore, the APC Director of Media and Publicity simply does not understand the structure of the NEDG. Is he telling us that the Nigerian Guild of Editors or Alliance for Credible Elections is biased? These are people who should be careful about what they say on behalf of their candidates. So, far, they should realise that General Buhari has participated in our debate, therefore, he knows the rules and the format that we use. I would say that what the Director of Media and Publicity for APC said is out of lack of knowledge of the structure of the NEDG. First and foremost, the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) is not the NEDG. BON is a member of NEDG. The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is a member; the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) is a member; Alliance for Credible Elections is a member, therefore, the statement, I have only been told. I have not read the statement, but I think that is not the heart of General Buhari. It is not his heart. He has participated in the debate in the past and he loved it and I am still sure General Buhari will participate on February 8 presidential debate by NEDG.

Egypt’s Sisi Cuts Short Ethiopia Visit After 32 Were Killed In Sinai

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi delivers a statement at the Elysee Palace in Paris

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi

Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi cut short his visit to Ethiopia for an African Union summit on Friday following an attack by Islamic State’s Egyptian wing which claimed the life of at least 30 soldiers and police officers in the Sinai Peninsula. Reuters report:

The four separate attacks on security forces in North Sinai on Thursday night were among the bloodiest in years and the first significant assault in the region since the most active Sinai militant group swore allegiance to IS in November.

Militant attacks in Sinai, while far from Cairo and tourist attractions, has crimped government efforts to project an image of stability to woo back foreign investors and tourists driven away by frequent political violence since a popular uprising four years ago that overthrew veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Sisi left Addis Ababa after meeting with the Ethiopian premier following the AU summit’s opening session, an Egyptian official there told Reuters.

Most of Thursday’s casualties occurred in the bombing of a military hotel and base in al-Arish, the heavily guarded Sinai provincial capital.

For me to be senator is an insult —Bafawara

Attahiru bafarawa

Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa was two-term governor of Sokoto State from 1999 to 2007, under the All People’s Party (APP), which later became the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). But today, he is a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Chairman of the party’s Elders’ Forum in Sokoto State, having joined the umbrella last year.

The former governor, who was highly instrumental in the large turnout of party supporters at the recent Jonathan/Sambo presidential rally in Sokoto State, afterwards, fielded questions from select journalists on Sokoto politics and other national issues. According to him, the forthcoming governorship election in the state will ultimately be between him and governor of the state, Aliu Wamakko. He said his party would have upper hand because the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Tambuwal, who is contesting the governorship of the state under APC, is not known to the people and, therefore, is not as popular as the PDP candidate, Senator Abdalla Wali. CHUKS EZE was at the meeting and he reports:

How come you still command immense following several years after leaving office, and was able to attract large turnout at the presidential rally in Sokoto; what is the secret?

The thing is that when you meet politicians, you just put them in one rating that everybody who is aspiring for governorship position is qualified to be a politician. But let me inform you that I will clock 60 this year. Out of that figure, I have been in politics for 30 years, which means that I started politics when I was about 22 years. That was in 1976 when I started as a local councillor. So, if people can recall, those who ventured into politics 38 years ago, did not do so for financial gain but for the purpose of helping the common man — service. But as you know, majority of our political office seekers today see politics as small-scale businesses. You cannot compare me with such breed of politicians whose utmost vision is to become a governor; not to serve the people but to see how much of their common wealth that they can amass for themselves. As for me, I am in politics to help people – to make life of everybody in my constituency very enjoyable. Since I left office, I have never left my people. And I left evergreen legacy in Sokoto State as governor of the state for eight years. That is the secret of my large followership in our state. I have never attempted to live outside Sokoto such as in Abuja, Kaduna or Lagos, since I left office. I choose to live in Sokoto and stay with my people despite all the harassments. It does not mean that I do not have where to stay in Abuja, Kaduna or anywhere else if I wanted. But I don’t feel comfortable abandoning my followers to suffer back home. And anywhere I move, they follow me and we move together. That is the secret of what you saw today.

Do you really think that the PDP has what it takes to wrest power from the ruling APC in Sokoto State in the forthcoming general elections, especially as regards the governorship seat?

Of course, yes. If there is anything that is as simple as ABCD, it is PDP winning Sokoto State. I say this because the voting line will not be on party line but on personality. Our people do not care about PDP or APC. They seek to know who the leaders of APC, PDP and even APGA are. And, fortunately, our people know who the leaders of APC and PDP and their pedigree are.

Are you not jittery over the profile of the APC governorship candidate, Hon Aminu Tambuwal, the Speaker?

Now, when you talk about the governorship candidate of the APC, nobody knows him here. Don’t be surprised when I say that nobody knows him even as a Speaker. Speaker, yes, but that is in Abuja. He cannot win governorship election here. Here in Sokoto, he is only representing two local government areas. So, 20 local government areas don’t even know who the gubernatorial candidate of the APC is in this state. But my candidate (Abdalla Wali) is a former Senate leader, former two-term Ambassador and former minister. He contested in 1999 and won senatorial election with seven local government areas. Moreover, he contested in opposition party, under PDP. While I contested the governorship under APP, he was the only person who won senatorial seat for the opposition PDP then. Doesn’t that show you that he is capable on his own level to win election? Fortunately enough, I brought him to politics during the UNCP. So, I trained him well and that was why when he left me, he was able to win that senatorial seat. He is part of me and knows the secret of winning election. But the Speaker; I was the person who brought him to political limelight. I gave him the ticket under the ANPP and he won a seat at the House of Representatives – not under PDP but ANPP. So, you can see that even the difference between both candidates. It is also interesting to note that in 2003, my current governorship candidate contested against me in 2003 gubernatorial election, when I was seeking re-election, and I defeated him. There is no way that you can compare Wali’s CV with that of Tambuwal. In the same vein, there is no way you can compare Wamakko’s CV with mine. So, the game is over. It is just a question of Wamakko handing over the baton to Senator Wali.

PDP is currently more or less a minority party in Sokoto State. Where do you place the power of incumbency in the forthcoming polls, considering that the federal allocation is in the hands of the APC?

There is awareness now. People are not talking about power of incumbency; people are judging by who Bafarawa is and who Wamakko is. You are talking about incumbency, is that a question of performance? If Wamakko is a new person or Bafarawa is a new person, then we can deceive the electorate. But every voter in Sokoto knows who Bafarawa and Wamakko are. Wali and Bafarawa are also known according to their political strengths. So, the question of incumbency doesn’t arise. On our part, we are sons of the soil, we are capable, we are on ground and we are leaders by our achievements. So, there is no cause for alarm as regards winning the elections.

Many of your colleagues – ex and serving governors – usually jostle to grab either senatorial seats or ministerial appointments but you seem to be indifferent about that. Is it your volition or you are being schemed out?

The thing is that we the professional politicians always like to encourage young ones to grow. We are not insatiable by nature, or greedy. Everything has its limit. I have always said that there is no way I can be a governor for eight years – controlling the whole state – and later stoop so low to take one-third of it to become a Senator. What about the younger ones? Why not promote them? If you can recall, when I was a governor, there was a very young popular Senator, who started as a member of the House of Representatives, during my first tenure. But I promoted him to the Senatorial position because he was performing. I am talking about the late Senator Sule Yari Gandi. Our agenda is building younger ones to grow. Everybody knew Senator Gandi when he was alive. Unfortunately, he died in that ill-fated ADC airliner. So, I cannot be a governor for eight years and go back to the classroom. What I mean by classroom is that, after being the Chief Executive of a state for eight years, I will be raising my hand to speak. And until the Senate President recognises me, I will continue to hang my hand in the air for the whole day. And if he eventually recognises me, after speaking, he will hit some stick on the table and ask me to sit before I can sit. I see that as an insult. But our people do not respect themselves. As a politician, you have to have integrity of your profession. Most of these people you see as governors and senators are not politicians; they are political office-seekers. A real politician cannot condescend so low fighting to become a senator after becoming Chief Executive of a state for eight years. And then his governor will come to Abuja and say that he wants to see his senators; and summon me? Isn’t it demeaning? I have no reason going to the Senate – maybe they have their motives for rushing to the Senate. Maybe their intention is to go there and start scheming to be in the committee of EFCC so that the anti-graft agency will not get in touch with them. Otherwise, what the hell are they looking for in the Senate? Why can’t they allow the younger ones who can perform better to go to the Senate or to become ministers?

And as for me, scheming for ministerial position; what the hell! After being governor for eight years, I will start fighting to become a minister? What sort of minister? There are lots of people who are capable of making good ministers; with good health and agility, to give the President better help. And then somebody like me at 60 will come and start looking for a ministerial position. What am I going there for? People should realise that when they reach a certain stage, they should make way for the younger ones. But some people don’t want the young ones to grow but rather sit tight until they die; and that is not the teaching of our elders. That is also why there will hardly be peace in this country, except such people change.

When you consider Ahmadu Bello, he promoted young ones. Gowon became the leader of this country at a youthful age and for nine years he promoted the younger ones. But today, people are 70 and above, yet they won’t allow the younger ones to grow. Such people are killing the country and I am so disappointed with Nigerians who are promoting such people. You reach the peak of your profession – either as a Customs officer you become a Comptroller-General, or as a military officer you become a Four-Star General – and then you come back fighting for political office at 72. Whatever idea or vision you have, why can’t you push it to the younger ones so that when they reach there, they will represent you and implement it?

It appears that you are contented with just being a kingmaker…?

I don’t want to be a kingmaker. Kingmakers usually engage in dangerous games. Some people try to become kingmakers for their personal interests – personal interest between king and maker. ‘I put you there as governor, how much are you going to give me monthly to remain there – 50 million, 100 million or more?’ And then you put the king in a fix. And the kingmaker will sit at home and be pushing the king to loot public funds and bring to him? I don’t want to be such kingmaker. All I want is help people to grow. I am contented and I don’t want anything from anybody who becomes the governor or whatever. My contentment is that I helped you to be there. I have been blessed with everything, so why should I try to become a kingmaker that will be placing demands on my kings? Those you see as kingmakers usually promote corruption; and they are dangerous politicians. They will not vie for positions but they will always buy the king to seek for them. Count me out of such game.

Assuming the PDP candidate wins the governorship election in your state; would you encourage the governor to probe the present regime?

That is not my business. I am not a governor. Probing or asking anybody to probe is not my business. I would not have anything to do in the affairs of any person’s government. When he is elected, he becomes the executive governor. So, it is he who will decide what is better for his government, not me.

If he seeks your advice on that, what would be your response?

I will not advise him to do what he thinks is not right for him and I will not discourage him from doing what he thinks is right. As executive governor, whatever he does rightly or wrongly, he will give his account to God. I don’t think he should rely on my advice, whether good or bad. I always try to keep myself away from such involvement.

12 Strong Reasons He Is Not Meant For You.

Posted on No comments

Life is long, and marriage takes as much work as it gives joy. You want a partner who will respect you, love you more than he loves himself, and is someone you can count on for the long haul. How he acts while you are dating will not change when you are married.

Twelve reason to take a step back

1. He often wants to split the bill – Men who want to split the bill are often selfish, and stingy. If you are looking for a man who will be a good provider, think about the fact that he cannot even provide for the evening’s entertainment.

2 When you are out together, he often leaves you at the table to join his visit with his friends instead of inviting them to the table – When he leaves you to fend for yourself while he is pursuing something that appears more interesting, he may not value your company, and certainly is not being respectful of your feelings.

3. He makes excuses to skip church or small group – Unless he is working, habitually making excuses so that he cannot attend church with you will continue throughout your marriage. You will find yourself in the position as the spiritual head of your family, instead of the man taking his rightful place.

4. You do not like his friends – Examine why you do not like his friends. Be sure it’s not jealousy because his friends take him away from you. It is healthy in a relationship for both partners to have same s*x friends. However, if his friends act in ways that offend you, and he is with them, chances are some of his behaviors are offending you. He will not give up his friends after you are married.

5. He always wants to “meet you there” – This shows a lack of commitment to you. He is not a protector, and is telling you this with his behavior.

6. He does not like your friends – This could be a sign of jealousy, also. Ask yourself if you are ignoring him to spend time with your friends. If this is not the case, then not liking your friends may reveal that he does not like who you are. This does not mean he does not love you, however, he may be planning to exert controls after you are married to try to change who you are.

7. Your parents do not approve – Parents are wise and can observe attitudes and behaviors a woman in love may not be able to see. If your parents do not approve, talk to them about their disapproval. You may discover your love had blinded you to some serious flaws.

8. You feel you have to keep your opinion to yourself – If expressing your opinions causes arguing and strife while you are dating, this will not change. If, as a couple, you cannot speak freely, you may not be on the same page.

9. He always wants to choose where you go on a date – This is a sure sign of a controlling personality. A controlling person will continue to control the relationship throughout your life. This will affect how you furnish your home, raise your children, and socialize with other couples.

10. He is disrespectful of your feelings and thoughts – This will not change. It displays a lack of respect for you that will continue throughout your relationship. It shows he does not value you as a person.

11. He has behaviors or attitudes you think you can change – This is a trap for many women. Women believe that with marriage, love, and support, the person will change. However, the man you marry will remain same person. If he hangs out with his friends many evenings a week, makes fun of you, criticizes you, or has other bad habits, take a step back. When you are married, this will be a source of strife and unhappiness.

12. You do not have peace – If you are struggling with these reasons, and have not peace, this is a sure giveaway to know he is not the one.

I’ll wipe away tears of Abia people – Alex Otti

Posted on No comments

diamond bank MD Otti

FROM OKEY SAMPSON, ABA

Abia state governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in the February 28 polls, Dr. Alex Otti has said he is coming into government to wipe away the tears of Abia people who he said had suffered immeasurably in the past.

Otti stated that Abians had suffered in the hands of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) –led government in the state to the point that if not for the mercies of God, people would be dying everyday from hunger occasioned by maladministration.

Otti who stated this at Isiala South during the flag off campaign of Chief Ahamdi Nweke, the APGA senatorial candidate for Abia Central said apart from bringing misery to the people of the state, that the leadership of PDP was behaving as if there were no people in the state in that one man was allowed to corner all elective positions in the state from governorship to State House of Assembly.

“I had a lucrative job I was doing, but I came into this race to bless the children of Abia and indeed all Abians so that they will not suffer the way we suffered.

“There are so many suffering in the state today and if not for the mercy of God, people of the state would have been dying in their numbers of hunger and this was caused by bad leadership.”

He said if he wins the February 28 election, as a way of ameliorating the sufferings of the people, that his government would construct a road from Arochukwu to Ukwa West, emphasising that within two years of his administration, he would tackle the problem of Aba to the point many will not recognise the city again.

The APGA governorship candidate said that what Abia state needed at this time of its crass under development and dwindling oil revenue was a man like him who had the connection and could access funds from world financial institutions to turn around the state.

Valid Reasons Why NOBODY Should Vote For Buhari – Fani-Kayode

Posted on No comments

Former minister of Aviation, Femi-Fani Kayode has described the emergence of Major General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd.) as the presidential flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as laughable.

9940e2ce44d712c2e05884159380d3ce_L

He took to Facebook to share his thoughts on the outcome of the APC primaries publicly kicking against the choice of Buhari.

His message reads:

Major General Mohammadu Buhari has emerged as the APC flagbearer and President Goodluck Jonathan has emerged for the PDP. Now the battle for the soul and future of our nation begins. The forces of light shall surely prevail over the forces of darkness and God’s counsel alone shall stand over Nigeria. I stand with Jonathan. Let’s get it on.

”Jihadi groups killed more than 5,000 people last month, with Iraq topping the league table of deaths, followed by Nigeria, Afghanistan and Syria.

In 664 incidents recorded in November by the BBC World Service and researched jointly with King’s College London, the overall death toll was 5,042, or an average of 168 deaths per day and nearly twice the number of people who were killed in the 11 September 2001 attacks on America.

After Iraq, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Syria, Yemen was fifth in the deadly league table, tying with Somalia, with 37 incidents each”- DORO ADEBENTLEY 11 December, Facebook.

All this and some people still say they want Buhari as President? A man who said, only last year, that ”an attack on Boko Haram is an attack on the north”? A man who said, in 2001, that he wants to ”spread sharia throughout the federation”? A man who said, in 2001, that muslims should only vote for muslims”? A man who said, in 2001, that ”why should christians be concerned when muslims cut off their limbs under sharia”?. A man who said, in 2001, that ”after all the limbs that are being cut off are muslim ones and not christian so why should the christians bother about it”?

This is the man that some Nigerians are clamouring for to be their President? May God open their eyes and protect them from themselves. May He grant them wisdom and discernment.

The centrist war: Why Buhari is the answer

Posted on No comments

APC presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari meets with U.S Secretary of State Kerry at the U.S. consulate house in Lagos

BY PATRICK OBAHIAGBON

Politics is a leveler. It brings the well-educated, cultivated and urbane person in contact with the ill-mannered, uncouth, illiterate and moronic personae into the ring. And that is exactly the lugubrious situation we have found ourselves in Nigeria since our 1960 flag independence. All sorts of people are confronting the public with all manners of theories, thinking and permutations. Everyone has suddenly become a pundit and so, reason has taken flight. You can call your opponent anything. You can even command God or Satan to kill your opponent so that your party can win. A Governor can now even throw caution to Ashkelon by wishing a Presidential aspirant, death. It is politics. Especially, the Nigerian brand. It condones no rules of decency. It is a “rofo-rofo” fight. “Bolekejah” is the natural response.

But politics is also a game for the strategist, the thinker, the organizer, and, of course, the fertile and brilliant minds, while not ruling out the thugs, the point-men, the button-men. We are all doing politics. But politics is a game for realists, idealists and dreamers alike. It is a game of numbers. The many, the merrier. And we are in Nigeria.

The 2015 presidential election campaigns and unfolding events in the last couple of weeks are simply sublime and ridiculous. Some of the events are very entertaining. But in this game, some must loose and some most win.

But the facts of the 2015 presidential campaigns are that the struggle for power in today’s Nigeria’s political landscape is basically an intra-class struggle as left forces that would have been canvassing alternative socio-political and economic system totally opposed to the present neocolonial dependent capitalist system are in retreat, if not totally eclipsing. And so, the field is left open for centrists of the left and centrists of the right. But, the odds favour the All Progressives Congress (APC) which took a great deal of effort, resources and time to build a coalition, which is now a behemoth, a movement waiting to redefine Nigeria in the history of progressive politics.

The APC, of course, is left of the centre in the ideological spectrum. The core of the party coming from the foremost progressive wing of the Nigerian ruling class, famous for its political progressivism. The core progressive elements and leaders of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria– the likes of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu,Ogbeni Rauf Arigbesola, Babatunde Fashola, Lai Mohammed,Chief Bisi Akande, and numerous others, have demonstrated progressive politics since the return of democratic rule in 1999. These progressive elements, who today shape the political direction of the South West zone forged a great coalition with the progressive elements in the South South zone such as the fire spitting and fearless Comrade Adams Aliyu Oshiomole, the inimitable Rotimi Amaechi ,and the spartan Chief Odigie-Oyegun,etc,with a progressive linkage to the South East Zone, with leaders like Ogbonaya Onu, Chris Ngige, Rochas Okorocha and other great progressives from the Igbo nationality. To crown the new political direction, these progressive minds linked up with the progressive wing of the political class in the North- West, North East, and the North Central Zones such as Chief Audu Ogbe, Senator Bukola Saraki, Malam El Rufai,Governor Kwankwanso and a host of others. The very focused political behemoth that came out from the coalition of the ACN, ANPP, APGA and CPC is the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Now, there is going to be a shift from the ultra–conservative centre-right control of the Nigerian state since independence. The point should be made that some progressive elements who had opportunity to exercise executive powers, starting from Chief Obafemi Awolowo to the Fasholas, Oshiomholes, Aregbosholas, Kwankawasos, Amaechi’s of today have demonstrated that power can be used for the upliftment and development of the citizens. These progressive elements have demonstrated that governance can be creative and lives can be transmogrified. Today, the governance in all the APC states is creative, progressive and people-centred. In Edo State, for example, governance is people-centred, creative and courageous. The development that has taken place in Edo State since Oshiomhole assumed office is outstanding. The progressives focus on the people and are able to do so because they are more enlightened, and are prepared to disseminate such enlightenments and progress to the people.

At the center, the Progressives are set to bring about social welfare to the citizens, and transform their lives. The progressives will promote mass education, create opportunities for all citizens and make life better for all. The progressives will create wealth and ensure its fair distribution to all citizens.

Today, the PDP conservative centre-right government has dragged the country to a failed state status. For the PDP leaders, political power is to advance and deepen primitive accumulation. They exercise power without accountability. They play god and use power to serve their stomachs. After all, their national chairman once went to mountain Olympus from where he stigmatized his party as one of monkey they work, baboon they chop. Above all, they are bereft of good ideas, which can serve the general interest. Ideas, which promote narrow interest of capital accumulation, continue to dominate public space. They cannot transform the country. On matters of defence and foreign policy, we are living witnesses to how the PDP has brought Nigeria to its knees.

The progressives who have demonstrated that power can be used for development and transformation in the various states where the APC is in power should naturally run the country if the country is to develop. APC governors have shown that development is possible. Today, Nigerians need to benefit from the genuine development agenda of the progressives at the centre. The Buhari presidency will guarantee good governance, development and genuine transformation. Given the caliber of fertile, cultivated and social democratic ideologues in the leadership of the APC, it is obvious that there is light at the end of the tunnel. General Buhari/Professor Osibanjo presidency will bring about the Pax Nigeriana of our dreams.

Memories from Ladoke Akintola Memorial Lecture (2)

REFLECTIONS: BY OLU OBAFEMI SMS Only: 08033341157 Email: omoajon@yahoo.com

The topic of this Lecture is obviously ambitious, but absolutely rife, apt and germane to the great question of the day in Nigeria and the rest of the world. Education is, no doubt the handmaiden of development in any nation. This is so even in the societies that are said to have developed, not to mention those nations like Nigeria who are said to be developing or worse still, under-developed. (a terrible consignment of fate dished out to us by our imperious definers of the West!). Nigeria is a state of unstable peace, worsened by insecurity, terrorism and insurgency. But here what raven said about the link between education and national stability; The best defense against terrorism is an educated people. Education, which promises to each individual the opportunity to express their individual talents fully, is fundamental to building a peaceful world

Raven went further to admonish the developed world, especially the United States, to rise up to the occasion of contributing substantially to the project of alleviating the pervasive poverty of the ‘poorest people of the world.’ And this can and should be done through education.

Many other renowned world educationists paint grim pictures of the criminal absence of education space in the world, especially in Africa, Asia and Latin America. James J. Durderstalt paints the picture of the crisis of access to Higher Education in the world thus; There are 30 million people in the world today who are fully qualified to enter a university but for whom no university place is available. Within a decade there will be 100 million university-ready people…in most of the world, higher education is mired in a crisis of access…Unless we can address this crisis, billions of people in coming generations will be denied the education so necessary to compete in, in an age of knowledge (my emphasis)

He further nudges the wealthy nations to assist the ‘developing’ nations in building the educational systems to meet their exploding needs.’ Have we ourselves begun to appreciate He states that the developed world owes it to humanity a duty to raise to the support of the under-developed world on the matter of educating the ever-growing number of their youthful population, Nigeria being one of the most hit nations with uneducated youth budge?

Education and National Development

It has long been established that education is inseparably tied with the development of a nation. In Nigeria, historically speaking, education and development are un-detachable. Our nationalists underscored this fact even in the drive for political independence in their awareness that:‘The country could not develop without a proper grounding in a national education system that can guarantee the production of the desired quality workforce without which national development is impossible (Olusegun Obasanjo, 2012).

Yet, long before Olusegun Obasanjo, there was the pioneering role played by our founding fathers in the nation and particularly in the Western Region. The founders of the Action Group led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, with the active participation of Chief Ladoke Akintola, in making education the foremost cardinal point in their development agenda. The free education programme of the West started by Awolowo was consolidated, even amidst the political torrents of the sixties by his successor, SLA. It is no wonder, therefore, that structuring their developmental plans around education, the Western Region was far ahead of the other regions in ‘nation building through human capacity building. It must be said that the tertiary institution at Ile-Ife, a brain-child of Chef Obafemi Awolowo, was actualized and completed by his successor, Chief Akintola. This is significant to mention in an age of governments in discontinuities that characterize our myopic governance style nowadays, where a new government, so as not to give credence to their predecessor, will set aside, like one fleeing from a plague, all structural efforts embarked upon by those who came before them, no matter how laudable or relevant to the yearnings of the people. It is a matter for commendation, that in spite of the mammoth political bickering and politics of hate that was fuelled between these two great men, the educational programme initiated by the predecessor, Chief Awolowo, was galvanized into fruition by the successor, Chief Akintola. Both men believed that building an enduring nation rests, inexorably, on a solid educational foundation; that no nation can develop behind the back of education.

We must also note that, part of the reluctance of Sir Ahmadu Bello to jump into the bandwagon of the clamour for early political independence was his determination to carry through his development effort of the north, a programmed that was committedly built around education. This he carried through with a remarkable degree of equity and equality in the fourteen provinces of the north. Besides establishing the West African Pilot in 1937, Nnamdi Azikiwe (Zik of Africa) was first President of this country. Before then he had done so much to support education and its development in his country. If we devote this lecture to the crucial issue of education now, it is to nudge people in government and others who have the means to brace up to the centrality of education in a knowledge society where physical industries will, inevitably yield space or the knowledge industry globally and our country can ill-afford to be left out in this enterprise.
