Posted on Wednesday 29 October 2014 No comments

Wednesday 29 October 2014

A Federal High Court sitting the Federal Capital Territory Abuja has granted injunction to suspend  the Abia delegate congress scheduled for Saturday November 1, 2014.

Two members of the party have asked the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, to sack the committee, which they said was set up to stop certain people from participating in the elections.

In an affidavit deposed to on their behalf by V. I. Uma, the plaintiffs, Chiefs Igwe Chukwu and Eche James, insisted that the committee offended the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electoral Guidelines for Primary Elections, 2014 and the Constitution of Peoples Democratic Party, 2012 (as amended).

Man in trouble over bank loan, fake documents

Posted on No comments

A medical student who dropped out of the university in his fourth year has landed in trouble after he allegedly forged documents to obtain N1.5 million loan from a microfinance bank in Abuja.

The young man, Salisu Yusuf, whom police said also claimed to be a medical doctor, allegedly presented a fake employment letter identifying him as a doctor with the National Hospital, Abuja, a false letter confirming his appointment and a fake bank statement from Mainstream Bank.

With those documents. the police doubted the veracity, the finance house did not hesitate to give him the loan, more so, after the fake appointment letter he presented stated he earns N300,000 monthly.

Abuja Metro gathered that he also presented a fake medical doctor who was later discovered to be a civil servant, as guarantor.

The Ahmadu Bello University medical student dropout however exhausted his stock of luck when the bank smelt a rat and decided to contact the management of the National Hospital to verify Salisu’s claims, and found all to fail the truth test.

At that point the bank had already offered the accused the money and decided to go after him.

They reported the matter to the police that arrested and started investigating the claims.

Salisu, who said he plans to go back to school to complete his studies said he dropped out of school because he has no one to pay his fees.

He said his parents are so poor that he had to depend on one of his uncles for his upkeep while in school but that the uncle disappointed him as he did not live up to his expectation.

With no one to run to for help, he said he had to leave and find other means of survival.

Narrating the hardship he was passing through before and after he dropped out of school, Salisu said he used to take microbiology students on lessons to make some income and sustain himself, yet that was not enough incentive.

The suspect, who says he regrets his act, narrated that he used the money from the loan to set up kerosene sales business as someone had told him it is the lucrative type of venture that would sustain his cash flow and enable him pick his medical course bills.

He also told the police how he plans to invest the proceeds of the business in his course.

The young man who said he has not lost his hope of becoming a medical doctor one day as he often sees himself in the dream wearing the while medical coat, told Abuja Metro, that “I feel very bad seeing myself in this condition because this is not what I plan to do, but condition forced me into this.

“I am from a very poor home and my father is very old and my mother if she hears this will just die because I was not raised to be a thief. After my secondary education, I gained admission into the Ahmadu Bello University to study medicine and because my parents cannot afford to train me, I went to one of my uncles who promised to assist but warned that the course I am going to study is for children of wealthy parents alone. But I didn’t take his words to mean anything until I commenced the course.

“He starved me of everything I asked for, to the extent that I could not afford the cheapest medical book. I had to start taking some microbiology students on private lessons to make little money to sustain myself. Yet, they were not able to pay much because they are also students.

“And when I could no longer endure the suffering, I had to drop out in my fourth year and since then life has never been easy.

“I know people will not understand what I passed through but those who went to medical school will understand me better because it is not easy to study medicine anywhere in the world if you don’t have anybody supporting you.”

“I did not drop out of school because I could not pass my examination, no, I am a very brilliant student and I have never failed from the first day I enrolled in school. I have a very good result and my transcript from the university is a proof that I am a good student, it was frustration that forced me to drop out of school.”

“Even though I feel very bad about what I have done, I did that to make some money for me to go back to school. I told the bank that I have a land at Gwagwalada, which I used as collateral to get the loan. Now that this has happened, I plan to sell the land and pay back the loan even though I have already paid about N700,000.

“I am appealing to Nigerians to help me go back to school and complete my education that is if I ever come out of this. But I don’t know how my parents will feel if they hear this. My father is very old and my mother will just die, I pray God to please help me.”

Enugu’s political nemesis is candidates’ imposivtion –Onwuegbu

Posted on No comments

Chief Anayo Onwuegbu’s over time has not waivered in his desire to be the governor of Enugu State, and that dream and aspiration he has held onto dearly and faithfully in the past 12 years.

As the elections come next year, he has started fanning the embers of the quest to be the next governor of the state. But he has a grouse with the state and its politics which he said has become that entrenched in the tradition of candidates’ imposition.

Why have you remained resolute to be governor of Enugu State these years?

What informed my decision is the fact that Enugu State has been under the rulership of the PDP since the present democracy came into being. We had Governor Chimaroke Nnamani who was there for eight years and now the outgoing Governor Sullivan Chime. They are both PDP and we played active role in supporting the party in winning the election. However, the actual dream of the founders of the PDP cannot be said to have been actualized in Enugu State.

If you look at the cardinal points and programmes of the party from inception which has to do with provision of employment for the people, provision of infrastructure which will invariably transform the economy and generate employment opportunities in Enugu State, that is completely lacking and because it is lacking, we cannot say we have actually delivered the dividends of democracy as packaged by the programmes of PDP in the state. If that is the case, I feel we owe the people and our party the duty of stepping forward and provide leadership and deliver to the people.

Do you have the political structure to see your ambition to fruition?

In 1999 I played behind the scene. In 2003, I did not play behind the scene; I contested for the ticket of the party and I set up the structure, but for the policy of the then Obasanjo’s administration that insisted on granting automatic ticket to all PDP governors that were going for second term, the then Nnamani wouldn’t have had a second term. I had the singular privilege and my ambition was responsible for the sharp division of the Enugu State House of Assembly in 2002, which produced a group of 16 that were loyal to me. It is on record.

Imagine from then to 2010 when I vigorously went to the state for the ticket. The same scenario also played out. A situation where our party set up a panel to conduct the primaries; the panel arrived Enugu and conducted the primaries and left for Abuja. A caucus met and said no this primary cannot be and quickly packaged another ad-hoc primary which you all know legally was wrong. We challenged it in the court of law but along the line, we are all PDP, we always have a way of resolving issues as a family. I had a nomination in 2011 but as a member of the big family, we had to let it be.

What then will you identify as the major governance issue in Enugu State since 1999?

The governance issue we have in Enugu is that whereas in 1999, Chief Jim Nwobodo played a major role in installing Chimaroke Nnamani, in 2003, Chimaroke rode on his own strength as a sitting governor irrespective of whether he had done well or not. The people of Enugu State are getting demoralized. We need to reassure them and carry the populace along by stepping forward and make sure that a candidate of their choice is selected and elected by the party congress and not an imposed candidate.

Imposition has so demoralized the electorate so much so that they are watching to see what happens. There is a limit to which you can enforce such a thing on the people. In 2011, they had thought we had gotten it until at the last minute the court, through a ruling, said we don’t have powers to reject a candidate nominated by a political party even though we can say we had a valid nomination. That was how Chime remained as the governor. It is imposition that is the fundamental problem of governance in Enugu State. When you put an unwilling horse to go to a stream, it hardly drinks.

Does zoning have anything to do with the issue or put in another way, what are your thoughts on zoning?

Well, we have not had zoning in Enugu State. I wouldn’t say zoning is a wrong principle; you can only talk of zoning as a good principle. Imagine a democracy like Nigeria where ethnicity plays a major role; that is the only principle you can use to justify zoning. Therefore, people see zoning as a way of reassuring other parts that they can also have a shot at power. Back home in Enugu State, there had never been any zoning.

In 2003, it was keenly contested by over 12 people, including my humble self. From Nkanu then was Chimaroke; from the greater Awgu was myself, Chief Alex Obiechina and two others. From Nsukka, you have Okechuwu Itanyi who was the deputy governor. All of us struggled for the ticket of PDP. There was no zoning. Then 2007 again, the scenario repeated itself. In 2010/11, it was the same issue.

So what do you make of the agitation that Enugu north should produce the next governor?

The concept is hinged on the fact that some time ago, it was strongly rumoured that the deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu was interested in becoming the governor of the state and his love-lust relationship with the sitting governor

is a well known fact. To put a stop to that ambition, the governor started announcing that he had zoned the ticket of the party to Nsukka zone. It is a deliberate effort to steer up a sectional consciousness to be used against an envisaged enemy. I stand to be corrected. Let him tell us in any gathering in Enugu state that says we are going to start zoning. He was not a beneficiary of any zoning arrangement; he was handpicked by former governor Chimaroke.

Are you not afraid that religious bodies will play a defining role that will stall your aspiration?

I don’t like discussing my personal relationship on matters of religion because anything that has to do with religion is spiritual. If anybody is going to benefit from the religious group, I will be the one.

My commitment to God and my duties to serve my creator is obviously channeled towards my personal relationship with various churches. I am a sworn Anglican by faith and practice, but it is on record that my spiritual warriors are more from the Catholics, because when you have an institution like a monastary, always praying for you on daily basis because of your personal relationship with them, I think you cannot get a greater praying warrior than such an institution. It is on record that as at today, though not a Catholic, I share very strong ties with the Catholic society. I had the privilege of once being asked to carry the chalice in a Catholic church being presided over by two Catholic bishops and when I walked up to the altar I reminded the bishop that you are asking me and my wife to carry the chalice up even when you know you won’t allow me to partake in the communion. It was an honour to me simply because God used me to set up the Visitation Monastry on that occasion.

If by special grace of God, I have been in a position to train reverend fathers, through my scholarship scheme, I will be in a position to say that God has somehow used me to build one or two churches here and there. If God in His infinite mercy has used me to bless some religious organisations here and there, I don’t need to go to them to ask them to support me when I am running for governorship. By the way, whom am I running the race for? Is it not the people?

Some people have been lined up to succeed the outgoing governor. Do you stand any chance against these people?

On the day I made my intention public, I addressed a press conference in Enugu and this question came up. Let me put it the way I was asked: How do you think you can succeed against an endorsed candidate by the governor? I reminded the people that the PDP constitution is very clear. It has created a body called the state congress whose sole responsibility is the election and selection of gubernatorial candidate. The membership of that body is duly spelt out. Three delegates in every Ward. In Enugu State with 261 wards, it is 261 multiplied by three.

That gives you about 783 members. The other members of the state congress are the people who you now call the state executive, the state caucus, elected members in the National Assembly. All put together, you have 921 members that make up the state congress. Now, the governor can only do his endorsement through the state caucus, which is not more than 34 members.

These 34 members are only a minute fraction of the 921 members that make up the state congress. Therefore, my reaction is simple. It is a game of choice. Those people can only cast their votes. The state congress is going to meet with 921 members and when they do meet and because it is a game of number, they will actually do their voting according to their conscience and when that happens, I am looking forward to receiving more than 461 votes out of the 921 and that will give me the ticket.

Your confidence is good, but congress members will want to know what you are bringing to the table. So what do you have for them in order to earn their votes

I am not sure you have read my declaration statement. What we are saying here is that  I want to be governor of Enugu State and I am saying here are my programmes. I am not approaching the delegates just as I am talking to you. No! We are saying today, here is the programme I have for Enugu and we are saying, who has a better programme than me. So, I am not contesting the governorship because I have been paying school fees for people, those are humanitarian gestures between me and God.

But what we are talking here is that I have a programme, go through and see if it will not be better for the people of Enugu. That is the issue. I am running a race not because I have this religious group with me; that is not what I am talking about. We are talking of a packaged programme that is focused on development of Enugu. It intends to make use of the people to implement the policies and programmes. The major disadvantage of imposition is that it ends up producing governors that are unprepared; and have no programme. It is funny and ridiculous.  It tends to ridicule the image of a state. We have a record of what the income of Enugu State is; we are aware that in Enugu State, there is no functional factory and we started asking what has gone wrong. I made it clear in my speech that I won’t be running if things are in place.

What we often hear is increase in school fees for this school and that school. That is not how to run a state. I am coming with a programme that has been packaged, edited and vetted by the civil society themselves.

Amaechi made me minister to reduce my influence — Wike

Posted on No comments

The immediate-past Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, on Thursday alleged that the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, made him a minister in order to whittle down his influence in the state.

Wike, who is seeking to become the next governor of the state, explained that becoming a minister was not aimed at promoting himself, adding that the target was to make him less influential and lose his base politically.

He recalled that he had wanted to vie for the senate position to represent Rivers East in 2011, but was barred from doing so, adding that the governor never told him that he (Amaechi) was nominating him (Wike) for the position of a minister.

Wike, who spoke in an African Independent Television interview monitored by NE on Thursday, stated that he was at a time no longer interested in working in a hostile environment when the governor hinted him of his intention to scrap the office of the chief of staff.

“Amaechi was told that if he wanted to have a successor, without anybody disturbing him, there was the need to push me away from Rivers State, to go and be a minister, for my influence in the state to be reduced. It was not a promotion for me, rather it was a strategy to make me less influential and to lose base.

“The governor never discussed with me that he was nominating me for a ministerial appointment. Ten persons were nominated to be minister from Rivers State. I was the second person on the list. Atedo Peterside was the first person on the list. Tonye Cole was the third person.

“Amaechi said he was going to scrap the office of Chief of Staff and I said I was no longer going to occupy it again. I was the Director-General of his campaign organisation in 2011 and having seen what had happened, it would no longer be conducive for me to work in an environment of hostility,” he said.

On his governorship ambition, Wike explained that his initial aspiration was not to succeed Amaechi and added that he had to consult stakeholders in the state before he decided to run.

Wike attributed the enmity between him and Amaechi to unnecessary suspicion, maintaining that he never left his constituency after becoming a minister.

“Succeeding Amaechi was certainly not my ambition. As events unfolded and time went by, a lot of things happened and I had to consult widely on whether to run or not. It is not as if I had the ambition all along to succeed Governor Amaechi,” he said.

Man pours petrol on policemen, threatens to set them ablaze

Posted on No comments

A 31-year-old driver, Tola Omoleke, on Thursday appeared before an Oshodi Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, charged with pouring fuel on two police officers to set them ablaze.

Omoleke, who resides at No. 33, Moshalasi St., Ejigbo, Lagos, is being tried for threat to life and assault.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Oct. 3 at Dopemu, Lagos.

He said the accused assaulted two police officers — ASP James Agboru and Cpl. Ali Sakuru — while performing their lawful duties.

“The accused assaulted the officers by fighting and punching them. He also poured fuel on the policemen and threatened to set them ablaze.

“It was the quick intervention of people that averted the disaster,’’ said Olatunde.
The prosecutor said the accused, who drove his car without a driver’s licence, damaged a Toyota Sienna car, property of one Mr Sheu Yisa, in his escape bid.

“The accused damaged a car while trying to escape from the law enforcement agents.
“He refused to stop but unfortunately for him his truck broke down at Dopemu.

“The complainants tried to arrest him but he resisted; instead, he started assaulting them,’’ he added.
According to Olatunde, the offences contravene Sections 172 and 238 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The Section 238 prescribes life imprisonment for offenders.
The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mr Akeem Fashola, adjourned the case till Oct. 31 for mention.

EBOLA: Nigeria sends 250 experts to Liberia, others

Posted on No comments

President Goodluck Jonathan has given approval for the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control to support Ebola-ravaged countries of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone to build local capacity of health workers to enhance response to the fight against Ebola Virus Disease.

Already, 250 Nigerian experts are set to be deployed in these countries in the next few days. The number will constitute the first phase of the 506 Nigerian volunteers that have been identified and ready for deployment in the West African countries ravaged by Ebola.

The Supervising Minister of Health, Dr. Khaliru Alhassan, who stated this during a press briefing on Thursday in Abuja, warned that the transportation of corpses was still banned in Nigeria except proper clearance is obtained from the Ministry of Health.

He said, “It is important that I inform you all that we have identified 506 volunteers ready for deployment in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. The first contingent of 250 Nigeria experts will be deployed as soon as possible after having concluded all necessary logistics under the watch of World Health Organisation. In addition to this, I am happy to announce that Mr. President has approved that our NCDC supports these countries to build local capacity of health workers to enhance their response.

“Nigeria’s public health must not be taken for granted and we must not go to sleep and start resting on our oars.

“It should serve as a warning that this current outbreak of EVD still presents a measured threat to Nigeria and the rest of the world until it is contained and eliminated from all countries, particularly from the West African sub-region.

“Without this, the possibility of a re-importation of EVD into Nigeria remains high; thus it is not quite over yet. It is with this regard that we have developed a Nigerian Ebola Preparedness Plan with all elements to work with the states to activate their incident management systems, to strengthen our national preparedness and be ready to respond to a potential outbreak, should it occur again.”

Alhassan therefore appealed to all states to enhance their surveillance system while the public should remain vigilant and immediately call the Ebola helpline or seek immediate medical attention in the event of suspected cases of sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pains, headache and sore throat.

He said, “To our health workers, who are the guard of this country, it is no more business as usual in our outpatient departments, clinics and operation theatres; we must raise our level of index of suspicion because we are the first contact. It is no more business as usual in handling routine cases.

“Transportation of corpses is still banned until duly cleared by the Ministry of Health after receiving the required documents. Therefore, we still appeal to Nigerians to be patient.”

PDP governors reply APC: FG not secretly funding us

Posted on No comments

Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State and Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State on Thursday faulted the claim credited to the Progressives Governors’ Forum that the Federal Government was starving the All Progressives Congress governments of fund.

They spoke in separate interviews with State House correspondents after attending a meeting of the National Economic Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Rising from their meeting in Ilorin on Wednesday, the governors were reported to have said that the Federal Government was funding the Peoples Democratic Party states to the detriment of the APC states.

But Jang and Aliyu said making such a statement was tantamount to mere playing of politics.

Jang, who is also a factional chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, said all states of the federation were experiencing the negative effects of dwindling federal allocation.

He said it would be wrong to accuse the Federal Government of funding only the PDP states.

“That is mere playing of politics. It is not true that the Federal Government is funding only the PDP states. It is not true,” he said.

The governor added that the lesson in the development to all state governments was to stop excessive reliance on the monthly federal allocation.

Aliyu also confirmed that there was no truth in the APC governors’ claim.

He agreed with Jang that it was time for state governments to increase their Internally Generated Revenue drive in order to reduce their reliance on monthly allocations.

Baze university student murdered over N7m loan

Posted on No comments

A student union leader at Baze University, Abuja, Awwal Umar, has been murdered by his friend, Abdullahi Bello, and a spiritualist, Lawal Saleh, over N7m the deceased lent to Bello.

Bello was said to have lured Umar, 26, who just got married, to Katsina State, where he was attacked and killed by some hoodlums who hid in a bush to carry out the dastardly act.

Parading the two suspects on Thursday in Abuja, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inalegwu, explained that Bello masterminded the murder after he could not pay back the N7m loan he got from Umar.

According to him, Bello had earlier asked the spiritualist to hypnotise Umar to forget the money, but the charm did not work, as the student kept pestering him for his money.

He therefore resorted to planning how to kill Umar to avoid paying up the debt.

The CP said, “On the October 2, when Awwal was just 33 days married, he took his wife to the father in-law’s house and told them that he was going to Keffi Road to purchase Sallah ram.

“He left in the afternoon and by the evening, about 9.30 pm that day, he made his last phone call to his parents that he had bought the ram and he was coming back home. That was the last contact they had with him.

Inalegwu said that through diligent investigation, detectives got Umar’s phone log and made 12 arrests, adding that during interrogation, the spiritualist confessed that he and Abdullahi killed the student leader.

The CP said the Police had exhumed Umar’s corpse from the shallow grave where he was buried, noting that the body had over 36 lacerations.

He stated that Bello had repainted Umar’s car and converted it to his personal use, noting that he used the loan to build a house, which the police said they had also located.

A district pastor of a church in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, has been remanded by a Lagos Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ikeja.

The 37-year-old pastor, Adebambo Adetunji, was alleged to be one of the gang members, who robbed motorists at the Ojota Bus stop, between April and July, 2014.

It was learnt that Adetunji and other suspects, who were still on the run, were notorious for snatching cars and robbing victims of their valuables at gun point.

Our correspondent gathered that a Toyota Camry and a Mercedes Benz ML320 with number plates MUS 413 BH and LND 623 BF respectively, were diverted by the suspected robbers, who were said to have also used cutlasses in their operations.

While the Mercedes Benz car was said to be the property of one Boniface Joseph, who was robbed around 10.30pm on April 30, at the bus stop, one Oluwatoyin Badmus, was reportedly robbed of her Toyota Camry around 6pm on July 6 at the same spot.

The police said Joseph also lost two phones and an IPad to the robbers, adding that valuables lost by the duo were worth N4.5m.

It was learnt that Adetunji was arrested by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad led by SP Abba Kyari after Badmus had reported the attack to the police.

The prosecutor, Inspector Nurudeen Thomas, on Thursday, brought the suspect, who hails from Osun State, before the Magistrate, Mrs. M.O. Oshodi, on three counts bordering on armed robbery.

Oshodi, who was holding brief for Mrs. Dan Oni, refused to listen to the defendant’s plea and ordered that he be remanded pending the time the Directorate of Public Prosecutions would issue legal advice on the matter.

The charges read in part, “That you, Adebambo Adetunji and others now at large, on April 30, 2014 at about 10.30pm at Ojota Bus stop in the Lagos Magisterial District while armed with guns and cutlasses did rob one Mercedes Benz Jeep ML320 with registration number LND 623 BF valued N1, 850,000, IPad valued N80,000, Blackberry Bold 5 valued N30,000, Nokia E5 valued N26,000 and cash sum of N250,000 total value N2,236,000 property of one Boniface Joseph.

“That you, and others now at large on July 6, 2014 at about 5.30pm at Ojota Bus stop in the aforementioned magisterial district did conspire among yourselves to commit felony to wit; armed robbery.

“That you and others now at large on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid magisterial district while armed with guns and cutlasses did rob one Toyota Camry 2008 model with registration number MUS 413 BH valued N2.3m property of one Oluwatoyin Badmus.”

It was said that the offences contravened Section 5 (b) and were punishable under Section 1 (2) (a) (b) of the Robbery and Firearms Act, Cap. 398, Vol. XXII, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990 and 2003 as amended.

Adetunji, who was clad in Ankara, burst into tears on hearing the charges.

The case was adjourned till December 3, 2014.

Nigerian schoolgirls face uncertainty if they are released

Posted on No comments

The Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram Islamists will face uncertainty if the extremists make good on an apparent pledge to free the teenagers they seized six months ago.

The government in Abuja claimed last Friday that it had secured a ceasefire deal and agreement on the hostages, raising hopes that the 219 teenagers held since April 14 would soon be coming home.
But community leaders and residents in their remote hometown of Chibok in Borno state say both the girls and their families will face challenges that could dampen any initial joy at their release.

The actual state of their town and the surrounding villages is an immediate issue, with Boko Haram having laid waste to communities in their bloody quest for a hardline Islamic state.

In particular, there is little left of the Government Girls Secondary School, which the militants stormed as the girls slept in dormitories on the eve of sitting national exams.

“Eighty percent of the school was destroyed,” said vice-principal Bulamodu Lawan. “Out of 29 classroom blocks, only four remain.”

The militants, who are opposed to so-called “Western education”, razed the administrative, IT and laboratory blocks, as well as the library and central food store.

Student hostels, staff quarters, the school kitchen and dining hall were also burnt to the ground, Lawan told AFP.

The federal government has promised to fund rebuilding work, as has Britain’s former prime minister Gordon Brown, now the UN’s global education envoy, who is behind a Safe Schools Initiative.
But so far, there has been little progress, meaning the girls are likely to have to continue their education elsewhere.

Fifty-seven girls who managed to escape the initial abduction are already at schools in other parts of the country.

– Traditional attitudes –
The devastation to bricks and mortar extends to surrounding villages in the Chibok area, which have not escaped Boko Haram’s murderous rampage, forcing thousands to flee.

“We are still living in our houses because they are intact,” said one parent, Usman Peter, who lives in Chibok town. “But most of the surrounding villages have been burnt and the areas deserted.

“So, parents who live in those areas have already left. I don’t think they will come back even after the girls are released.”

Having a place to resume their studies and live is one thing but the girls and their families may face physical and psychological difficulties as well as having to confront traditional attitudes.
“The condition our girls will come in is our major concern,” said Enoch Mark, a Christian pastor whose daughter and niece are among the captives.

“We keep wondering if our girls will come back pregnant or indoctrinated by Boko Haram.
“The kind of people they have related with who could have an impact on their psyche is a source of worry to us. This can have an impact on their reintegration into the community.”

Evidence of sex outside marriage and pregnancy would be a major obstacle, with families having to fight hard to overcome deeply ingrained conservatism.

Boko Haram has maintained that the girls had not been ill-treated or sexually abused but human rights groups have documented both among former hostages.

“In whatever situation they come back to us, we can’t disown them,” said Mark, although he accepted that some families “may object” to a pregnancy or their forced conversion to Islam.

– Further abduction threat –
The six-month ordeal has been too much to bear for some families and some have died from stress and high blood pressure, said residents.

Some girls will have to face that bereavement while others could place an extra burden on families — most of them farmers — who have been unable to plant crops this year because of the violence.
Kidnapping young women and girls — as well as forcibly conscripting young men and boys to fight for Boko Haram — was a well-established tactic by the militants even before Chibok.

Some estimates put the number of women held by the group in the high hundreds.

Even the day after the government announced an end to hostilities, Boko Haram were suspected of kidnapping some 40 women in neighbouring Adamawa state.

“Keeping the girls safe from further abduction is another worry because attacks are still being carried out,” said Mark.

“Continued violence and attacks can still have a psychological effect on the girls.
“Staying in an atmosphere of fear after going through so much trauma can have an adverse effect on their mental state.”

Women suggest sex strike to end war in South Sudan

Posted on No comments

A group of South Sudanese women peace activists has suggested that men in the civil war-torn country be denied sex until they stop fighting.

The suggestion emerged after around 90 women, including several members of South Sudan’s parliament, met in the capital Juba this week to come up with ideas on how to “to advance the cause of peace, healing and reconciliation”.

A key suggestion was to “mobilise all women in South Sudan to deny their husbands conjugal rights until they ensure that peace returns,” organisers said in a statement Thursday.

Other proposals included finding ways to meet the wives of President Salva Kiir and his arch-rival, rebel chief Riek Machar, to “ask them to join the search for peace and reconciliation by impressing upon their husbands to stop the war”.

Thousands of people have been killed and almost two million have fled the fighting between government troops, mutinous soldiers and tribal militia forces.

Civilians have been massacred, patients murdered in hospitals and people killed while sheltering in churches.

Almost 100,000 people are sheltering in squalid UN peacekeeping bases fearing they will be killed if they leave.

Tobias Atari Okori, from the government-backed South Sudan Peace and Reconciliation Commission, acknowledged that the idea highlighted that people were desperate for the war to end.
“People are experiencing great suffering, and it is the women, children and the aged who are suffering the worst,” he told AFP.

The UN special envoy on sexual violence Zainab Bangura said this month the levels of rape are the worst she had ever seen.

Political and military leaders have repeatedly broken promises made under intense international pressure, including during visits to South Sudan by UN chief Ban Ki-moon and US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Earlier this month, a group of 19 major aid agencies warned that while massive food drops had helped avert famine for now, the threat remained and would continue to worsen the longer the war continues.

Patience Jonathan resigns as permanent secretary

Posted on No comments

Wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Dame Patience Jonathan, has resigned her appointment as Permanent Secretary in the Bayelsa State Civil Service.

The 57-year-old Patience was said to have left the service voluntarily.

Dame Patience Jonathan was one of the appointed 17 permanent secretaries in the state civil service in July 2012.

The appointment had caused outrage in the state at the time with some Bayelsans expressing misgivings about it and the extent to which the civil service was politicised.

Though Ministry of Education sources said Patience disengaged from service voluntarily, there is speculation that she resigned because of alleged rift between her and Governor Seriake Dickson.

The alleged frosty relationship between the duo was said to have been triggered by her unwillingness to support Dickson’s second term bid.

Instead, it was learnt that the First Lady had preference for the Special Assistant to the President on Domestic Matters, Mr. Waripamowei Dudafa.

It was gathered that Patience resigned to enable her to have the moral justification to fight with the governor for the soul of Bayelsa State.

At the state’s Ministry of Education on Thursday, fear pervaded the entire place as many civil servants were afraid to comment on the issue.

But our correspondent learnt from reliable sources that the ministry had computed her terminal benefits already.

For those who agreed to speak only on condition of anonymity, they said, “The whole thing is political. It appears Madam Peace is not happy with the governor. With her resignation, the battle-line has been drawn.

“I feel the President’s wife resigned to enable her to have the moral right to slug it out with Dickson ahead of the governorship poll in the state. Let no one deceive you, the whole thing is politics. After all, she is 57 and the retirement age is 60.”

When contacted, Chief Salo Adikumo, who resigned during the week as Commissioner for Education, said he was no longer the commissioner.

“I resigned recently as commissioner to enable me to pursue my political ambition. Please direct all your questions to the Ministry,” he said.

However, a high ranking official of the ministry said it was true the First Lady had resigned.

The official, who did not want her name in print for fear of victimisation, dismissed political undercurrents in her resignation.

He said, “I can say Dame Patience Jonathan has voluntarily retired. But whether there is political undertone in her resignation, I cannot say.

“I think the First Lady felt that her continued stay as Permanent Secretary will be depriving others.

“Already, in accordance with the civil service rules, we have prepared all her entitlements. Whatever is due her will be given to her. She will also be receiving her pension.”
