APC Appeals To Boko Haram To Ceasefire

Posted on Monday 30 September 2013 No comments

Monday 30 September 2013

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on Boko Haram to immediately cease all attacks and embrace dialogue in the interest of national peace and security, following what is undoubtedly a resurgence of deadly attacks believed to be perpetrated by the sect.

In a statement issued in Warri on Monday by its Interim National Publicity, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party strongly condemned the latest of such attacks that left many students of the College of Agriculture in Yobe dead and injured on Sunday, calling the killings dastardly, senseless andindefensible.

It called on traditional, religious, political and opinion leaders in the affected areas to intervene urgently to end the cycle of violence being perpetrated by the sect.

”It is clear that this Boko Haram menace cannot be resolved by the government alone, hence all stakeholders must urgently intervene to complement government’s efforts to end the insurgency and get those behind it to embrace

dialogue.

”There can be no justification for Boko Haram to continue to kill and maim innocent citizens, especially because the victims are not just fellow Nigerians like them, but most are actually their kith and kin,” APC said.

The party described the continued violence by the sect as inexcusable,

especially at a time that the government has offered an Olive Branch by setting up a committee to dialogue with the sect.

”We in the APC have been unrelenting in our advocacy for dialogue as a way of ending the insurgency. Fortunately, the government has also embraced dialogue, after initially resisting it as an option.

”Boko Haram should remember that they are not fighting an external war, and that their grievances, whatever they are, can never be resolved by continued killing, maiming and plundering. They must therefore put an immediate end to their cycle of violence and opt for dialogue. The longer this violence continues, the more difficult it becomes to resolve. Enough is enough!” it said.

Olubolade planning Ekiti PDP leaders’ kidnap –APC

Posted on No comments

The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has accused the Minister of Police Affairs, Caleb Olukolade, of “a clandestine move” to arrange a fake kidnap of some Peoples Democratic Party leaders in the state so as to implicate the Governor Kayode Fayemi-led administration.

The state Chairman of APC, Chief Jide Awe, while addressing journalists at the party secretariat on Monday, said, “We reliably gathered that Olubolade is making frantic move to hatch an evil plan to cause confusion in our state.

“There is a clandestine move by the Peoples Democratic Party to kidnap some of their leaders, particularly the chairman of the PDP in Ekiti State with a claim that the kidnap is carried out by our party.

“What we are doing presently is a preventive measure. Our own network convinces us that this is what they are planning to do. We know about the meeting that Olubolade held in Ekiti West and other parts of Ekiti State to hatch the plan.

“We warn that this may cause instability in government. Already, we have contacted the Police and we are going to write them a letter officially.”

Olubolade in a telephone interview on Monday, however, denied the allegation.

“They should find something useful to do. They should engage themselves in useful ventures that could benefit the state. They owe the people the duty to develop the state,” he said.

Four of the teenagers -Blessing David, Chikodi Samuel, Mercy Dickson and  Miracle Ifeanyi- appeared in court while Goodluck Erondu and Happiness Chinemerem were absent.

The prosecutor, Insp. Agwu Okoronkwo, told the court that the fifth and sixth accused were not in court as they had given birth while in custody.

Okoronkwo applied that the names of the two be deleted from the charge pending the time they would be fit to stand trial.

The teenagers and one Isaac Okwuonu, a medical doctor, now at large, were said to have, between July and September, at Isaac Okwuonu Memorial Hospital, Ogbor Hill, Aba, conspired to commit felony and trade in newly-born babies.

When the charges were read to the accused, they pleaded not guilty.

Wickedness! 20-Yr-Old Jealous Ex-Girlfriend Sets Rival On Fire For Snatching Her Boyfriend (Photo)

Posted on No comments

According to a report by Sunnewsonline.com,
A 20 year old girl allegedly set ablaze the 22 year old new love interest of her ex-boyfriend. Cynthia Onah reportedly went to her ex-boyfriend's house at Onugba Nike area in Enugu State late at night with a gallon of fuel and emptied its content on Chinwe Igwe, her ex's girlfriend, who was sleeping. The incident took place on August 24th.

The Commissioner of Police Enugu State, Mr. Mohammed Adamu described the incident as very unfortunate. “It is terrible that a girl because of jealousy would set another girl on fire simply because they are befriending the same boy.”
CP Adamu explained that on that fateful day, Cynthia had in connivance with another suspect, one Obiora Chukwuegbo stormed Chika’s home and set Chinwe on fire. It was only the assistance of  neighbours that Chinwe was rescued through the window as the fire consumed the room. She was said to have been taken to a private hospital before she was transferred to Annunciation Specialist Hospital  Emene, Enugu State where she is still receiving treatment.

The boyfriend, Chika told Sunday Sun
“I am a driver and I’ve been dating Chinwe for the past five years. We had little quarrel and we stopped dating. I meet Cynthia who is a prostitute and dated her for just one month. We separated one month after because at times she would be chasing me with a knife. I couldn’t bear it and so I went back to settle with my former girlfriend. Cynthia didn’t give up as she threatened that she was going to deal with us. She even threatened to pour acid on me.
Being a driver, I travelled the day Cynthia burnt my girlfriend. It was one of my neighbours that called me to say that my house was on fire and that somebody poured fuel under the door and it exploded and burnt my girlfriend who was sleeping in the room; that they have rescued her through the window.
“When I got home, I saw that all my property had been burnt to ashes. My girlfriend was hospitalized because she sustained injuries from the fire. But I am determined and I have promised God that with the condition of my  girlfriend that I am still going to marry her.”
The suspect, Cynthia, who hails from Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of  Enugu State, said
“I started dating Chika when he had misunderstanding with his former girlfriend, Chinwe. We dated for one month and then he told me that he was no longer interested in marrying me. Chika is owing me N12,000. When we had a quarrel, I did not threaten him with a knife. I only used the knife to deflate his tyres.
“I have quarreled with Chinwe several times. I sent her a text message to leave my boyfriend. Because she threatened  me, I also threatened her that she will never enjoy the relationship. I don’t  know anything about who took fuel to the house of her boyfriend and burnt  the house. On that fateful day, Chika called my phone at night and said that I should meet him at Emene junction. I was out waiting for him when the policemen from the State CID arrested me. I didn’t know anything about the incident. I only know we have traded words.”
When  Sunday Sun visited the victim at the Annunciation Specialist Hospital Emene Area, Enugu State, she said:
“I am still shocked at what happened. I regret dating Chika as I have been turned to something else now. I saw  Cynthia Onah and  Chukwuegbo Obiora after they had poured  fuel under the door and fire was everywhere. I was calling him for help. It was when I was calling  for help through the other window that  I saw Cynthia Onah and Obiora Chkwuegbo running away and I was shouting for help until the neighbours broke one of the windows and carried me out from the window”,  she said.
“My relationship with Chika is over. I am in pains and agony. I didn’t know what to do. I was sleeping and suddenly I saw smoke and it exploded and caught fire. I could have been burnt to ashes if not for the neighbours who broke through the window and rescued me,” she added.
CP Adamu said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

ASUU blasts Jonathan: Your Media chat is empty and less comforting

Posted on No comments

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday criticised President Goodluck Jonathan media chat on the country’s 53rd Independence Day celebration, describing it as empty and less comforting.

The union said President Jonathan’s media chat has succeeded in further showing Nigerians the clueless nature of the leadership to solving pressing problems of insecurity, corruption and the comatose education sector.

ASUU in a release signed by the Chairman of the University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr Olusegun Ajiboye, titled: “Nigeria at 53: No message of hope for Nigerians Yet,” said the hope that Nigerians had to listen to practical solutions to the problems in the country was dashed when they listened to the “empty” interview which offered no solutions.

While picking holes in the President Jonathan’s chat, ASUU bemoaned the quality of the nation’s leadership and its failure to provide solution to problems affecting the masses, especially the poor.

The union asked Nigerians to prevail upon “this government to consider the poor and the children of the poor by giving the needed and necessary attention to public education in Nigeria.”

ASUU said the presidential team needs to work on the president to bring messages of hope and not dampen the morale of the already dejected Nigerians.

He said: “Nigerians were all disappointed at President Jonathan’s media chat on the eve on the 53rd independence anniversary of the country. Many Nigerians expected their President to come out with practical solutions and cogent policy statements on urgent, burning national issues were greatly disappointed at the drab media chat. The President cannot be quoted on any of the issues raised during the interview. Most of his answers were not only evasive but lame. Critical issues, such as Boko Haram insurgency, lingering ASUU strike were all treated with mere disdain by the President. The closure of Nigerian universities for upwards of three months received a lackadaisical treatment from Mr. President.

“Nigerians were at sea when their President and Commander- in- Chief was asked questions on one Boko Haram leader, and the President could only replied that “I don’t know him”. Mr. President, do you need to sit down in town hall meetings before you know the terrorists inflicting lots of pains and agonies on your people daily? Did Obama need to know Osama bin Laden before he took decisive action to end his reign of terror?”

Universities Workers begin strike

Posted on No comments

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities  on Monday began indefinite strike.

This followed by a unanimous resolution adopted by members of the University of Ibadan chapter of the association at a congress held at the university Arts Theatre in Ibadan.

The Chairman of the association, University of Ibadan chapter, Dr Wale Akinremi, said that the strike was total.

”This is as a result of the directive from our National Executive Council; so, the strike is a national strike.”

He said that the association should have gone on strike for a very long time ”because of the government’s provoking way of attending to issues”.

” We have been short-changed by the government in the area of subventions and we cannot take it again ,” Akinremi said.

According to him, the education sector is the bedrock of the nation’s development and should be treated with care.

He said that there were other important issues beside the subventions that needed to be addressed.

Akinremi listed the issues as training, funding and disparities in terms of payment.

He said: ”Non-teaching members of staff are wrongly placed in the education system, and these issues must be holistically addressed.”

According to Akinremi, SSANU will continue with the strike until it is call off by the national body.

READ The Real Story of Jim Iyke's Deliverance at TB Joshua's Church And what Jim Iyke Said about his deliverance

Posted on No comments

Making a surprise appearance in The SCOAN, Nollywood actor Jim Iyke entered quietly and unannounced, joining worshippers from around the world as they listened to the inspiring message from renowned Prophet TB Joshua during the service on Sunday, 29 September, 2013.

As The SCOAN’s Wise Men moved through the congregation in prayer, the lightning of God located Iyke and he was no longer able to control himself. Lunging towards one of the Wise Man as if to attack him:

An evil spirit that had been tormenting the life of Jim Iyke manifested! The congregation in the auditorium and the overflow congregations shouted in surprise as they began to witness the deliverance of a man they were all too familiar with.

The evil spirit that had tormented the life of Jim Iyke for so many years confessed that it was the cause of his setback and disappointment. It confessed that it was the reason he could never marry, stating that it would not allow him to love anyone. It continued confessing that Iyke was the biggest and that it was only God's grace that had kept him. As the evil spirit inside him struggled to attack the Wise Man, the supremacy of the Holy Spirit continued to overpower it.

The deliverance continued but the battle was not against flesh and blood; it was against the spiritual entities that had been causing crisis in his life, family, health, career and future.

To the jubilation of the congregation, the name of Jesus Christ prevailed over the evil spirit and Iyke received his freedom. Overwhelmed with what had just happened, Iyke immediately knelt in God's presence, appreciating His Creator for his miraculous deliverance. Hallelujah!

Jim Iyke, born James Ikechukwu Esomugha, is currently one of the highest paid actors in the Nigerian movie industry and cultivated the name “Nollywood bad boy” for himself. As one of the most successful actors, he has starred in over 150 films to date. He has launched his own film production unit, “Untamed Productions” and his own music label, “Untamed Records” with his very own album, “Who Am I?”He is also founder of “Jim Iyke Foundation”, contributing funds to children of the less privileged and children with physical challenges.

Among his movie awards are: The Teenage Choice Award; Best Actor In Nigerian Entertainment Award; African Achievement Award; Best Actor of the Year (Mode Men Award 2010); Sexiest Man In Nigeria 2008, Best African Actor (NET Awards).

The humility demonstrated by Jim Iyke in submitting himself to the power of God should prompt others in his industry to make the same life-saving choice.

Resumption: Suntai seeks out-of-court settlement with Assembly

Posted on No comments

Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State on Monday sought for an out-of-court settlement in a suit he filed challenging the State House of Assembly’s decision to reject his letter of resumption to duty.

Suntai had filed an action before a Jalingo High Court challenging the decision of the Assembly, which rejected his letter of resumption of duty after returning from a medical treatment abroad.

The presiding judge, Justice Ali Andenyatso, adjourned the case to October 28, for further hearing or for the court to receive the outcome of the out-of-the-court settlement.

Counsel for the governor, Elijah Nyaro, who stood in for Mr Alex Iziyon (SAN), filed an oral application seeking a three week adjournment to enable the parties to reach an out-of-court settlement.

Mr Yusuf Ali (SAN) and Mr Yusufu Akirikwen, counsel for the Assembly and Speaker Haruna Tsokwa, respectively, did not object to the request.

Justice Andenyatso said, “Even though the ruling on the application for the transfer of matter to the Court of Appeal, as requested by the Taraba Assembly was ready, I am adjourning the case to October 28 as prayed by the lawyers.”

Fed Govt makes $2.525b from PHCN sales

Posted on No comments

The Federal Government has made $2,525,824,534 from the sale of 14 successor companies of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) Limited.

President Goodluck Jonathan will today present the licences to the owners of the successor companies.

A statement yesterday in Abuja by the Director of Communications, Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Mr. Chigbo Anichebe, said: “So far, of the 14 successor companies scheduled for handover, US$2, 525,824,534 was realised as proceeds. Of the amount, US$1,256,000,000 came from the Distribution Companies (DISCOs) while the Generation Companies (GENCOs) raked in US$1,269,824,534.”

The BPE said the Federal Government set aside about N384 billion to settle labour liabilities.

The agency said the President would present the share certificates and licences to the 15 new owners of the PHCN successor companies who have fully paid their bids.

“The presentation, which is scheduled to hold today at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, is part of the build-up to the activities for the 53rd Independence anniversary of Nigeria,” the statement said.

It quoted the Director-General of the BPE, Mr. Benjamin Dikki, as saying: “This handover is a culmination of 14 years of painstaking effort by the National Council on Privatisation (NCP), the BPE and other key stakeholders to reform and liberalise Nigeria’s electricity industry, which began in 1999.”

The Electric Power Sector Reform Implementation Committee (EPIC) was set up in 2000 with the mandate to find legal and regulatory frameworks for the sector.

This gave birth to the National Electric Power Policy, which was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in September 2001, followed by the passage of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005.

Electricity workers, under the aegis of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC) have vowed to resist the planned handover of the PHCN today.

They said the Federal Government should first settle all agreements with Labour before the handover.

The NUEE and SSAEAC said they would picket the PHCN headquarters in Abuja and Lagos today, if the government hands over the power companies to their investors without abiding by the agreement with Labour.

The unions’ leadership yesterday directed the members across the country to resist the handover of PHCN’s facilities to investors.

In a statement by its General Secretary, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the NUEE directed its members to resist what he called the forcible takeover of PHCN.

The statement reads: “Further to our earlier circular to resist the forcible takeover of PHCN, it is now clearer that the Federal Government is bent on handing over PHCN’s facilities to investors without conclusively settling labour issues.

“This position of government is not only unfair and condemnable but is a direct affront on the economic, social and physical well-being of the workers and their families.”

Rights activist and President of the Civil Rights Congress (CRC), Mallam Shehu Sani, said yesterday the desire by Nigerians to have uninterrupted power supply should not be done at the expense of casting darkness on their lives.

In a statement in Kaduna, Sani noted that the Federal Government’s proposed handing over of the PHCN to investors today is another step towards impoverishing Nigerians and selling off the nation’s assets.

He said the privatisation of the Nigeria Airways and the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) by the government was disastrous.

The activist said President Jonathan would go down in history as one who approved, execute and presided over the disposition of the nation’s assets.

He said: “The privatisation of the PHCN and the scheduled hand over to ‘investors’ on today stands condemned. The exercise is nothing but a criminal robbery of our collective assets by a few bourgeoisie elite…”

Popes to be declared saints next year

Posted on No comments

photo

Pope Francis has announced that Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII will be declared saints on 27 April 2014.

He said in July that he would canonise his two predecessors, after approving a second miracle attributed to John Paul.
Polish John Paul, the first non-Italian pope for more than 400 years, led the Catholic Church from 1978-2005.

Pope Francis approved John XXIII's canonisation despite the fact that no second miracle had been attributed to him - usually a requirement for sainthood.

Reports say the decision to canonise the two at the same time appears designed to unify Catholics.
John Paul II is a favourite of conservative Catholics, while John XXIII is widely admired by the Church's progressive wing.

Eyewitnesses said the travellers were beheaded with their heads placed on their lifeless bodies on the main road.

At the Makintafamari village, in a separate incident, gunmen also cut the throats of four persons on Saturday. They were returning to Maiduguri in the evening.

Borno Police chief Lawal Tanko confirmed the attacks .

Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam said: “We call on Mr. President and all the security chiefs, to intensify security operations through aerial surveillance, to contain the situation before it consumes the region and country.

“On our way from Maiduguri to Damaturu this afternoon (Sunday), we saw a trailer and bus that were burnt, with the occupants slaughtered and their corpses littering the highway.

“Government should rise up to its responsibilities to save the lives and properties of its citizens,” he pleaded15.

The governor said that anyone travelling on the Damaturu to Maiduguri highway, was taking a huge risk.

He urged the newly established Seven Division of the Nigerian Army, to intensify surveillance of all flash points in the two states, to flush out the insurgents.

Suntai: Ex-Speaker denies bribery allegations

Posted on No comments

A former Speaker of Taraba State House of Assembly, Mr. Isa Ajiya, on Sunday denied allegations that the state Acting Governor, Garba Umar, offered bribes to members of the House to reject the resumption letter written by Governor Danbaba Suntai.

He said this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja. He described the allegations as reprehensible and an assault on the integrity of the lawmakers.

Ajiya, who was reacting to a statement credited to a media aide of Governor Suntai, Mr. Sylvester Giwa, threatened legal action against the media aide if the allegation was not withdrawn.

He challenged Giwa to produce any evidence to support the bribery allegations or be prepared for prosecution.

Ajiya said, “The allegation is unfounded and we challenge Giwa to provide proof. If not, we will expose them in a manner we have never done before.

“We will reveal to the world why this cabal was desperate to rule even when it is clear Governor Suntai is médically unfit to rule the state.

“They were so desperate that they had to write a letter of resumption of the governor by proxy, they were so desperate that they had to drag the Assembly to court by proxy.

“The case in court against the Assembly was the handiwork of the cabal,” he said.

The former Speaker also alleged that the case currently in court was originated by those he called members of the “cabal” and not Suntai.

He also insisted that the acting Governor, was never involved in any court action against his boss.

On the allegation that Umar had betrayed his boss, the former Speaker said it was rather the cabal that had betrayed the governor by placing their greed for power over and above the safety and health of the governor.

Meanwhile, the police in Taraba on Sunday released Giwa, who was arrested last Friday by the state police command.

His release came amidst explanations by the state Police Commissioner, Mr. Jibril Adeniji, that Giwa’s arrest was ordered by “higher authorities.”

Giwa, who was arrested along side three others was later driven to the state Police Headquarters by a team of armed mobile policemen who allegedly told him that his arrest was an order from above.

Our correspondent gathered that his release followed intervention by prominent individuals in the state.

Giwa told our correspondent that he was released on bail and asked to report back on Monday (today).
