NVIDIA DROPS THE PRICE OF ITS SHIELD PORTABLE GAMING CONSOLE TO $299

Thursday 20 June 2013

Nvidia announced today that Shield, its portable gaming console that combines a traditional controller with a high definition 5-inch multitouch display, will now be sold for $299 and launched on June 27.
It’s a considerable drop from the $349 price tag that was attached to initial pre-orders roughly a month ago, and should help to stimulate some interest in the device going into the traditionally laclustre summer months for gamers. Anyone who has already pre-ordered the device will now be charged the new, lower price when it ships.
Shield was announced at CES in January, and is powered by the company’s new Tegra 4 processor. It’s based on Android Jelly Bean and is capable of streaming games from any PC that is fitted with a GeForce GTX GPU.
Consumers will be able to pick up new titles from the Google Play store and Nvidia’s own TegraZone library, or stream PC games over Wi-Fi to almost anywhere in the house.
Titles can also be played on a traditional TV through Steam’s Big Picture mode, a re-modeled interface that Valve developed to make general navigation easier for players using a controller.

The Shield appears to be a middle ground between smartphone and tablet gaming – which has exploded in recent years due to the reduced cost of individual titles – and the traditional portable gaming experiences offered by dedicated handhelds.
The device is certainly unique and follows a whole range of new video game hardware that wants to shake up an industry long dominated by Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. OUYA, an Android-based console for the TV, has attracted a huge amount of attention from the press and gaming community, but there’s also GameStick, GamePop and the Razer Edge Pro gaming tablet to content with.

Nollywood Omotola Husband’s Scrap Plane Causes Panic In Lagos

Friday 14 June 2013

A scrap plane formerly owned by the late Apostle Gabriel Oduyemi of Bethel Ministries, Ajah, Lagos, caused panic in the city on Thursday as rumour spread that another aircraft had crashed in Lagos.

It was learnt that the plane, which was recently released to Capt Matthew Ekeinde, husband of Nollywood star, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, was being dragged to Badagry area of the state before its tyre burst. The incident forced the new owner to dump the plane in a nearby filling station.

Hundreds of residents trooped out with their smart phones and camera, and queued behind the gate of Dapsey Oil filling station at Igando where the plane was parked.

A senior employee of the filling station said the plane, with registration number N972TF, was being towed from Muritala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja to Badagry when one of the tyres burst.

He said, “The plane was brought here around 2am after one of its tyres burst. It was being towed by a red vehicle, but after it got to Igando, they discovered it would be difficult to get it to its destination with burst tyre, which was why they brought it here.”

The Lagos State Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the police provided escort for the plane.

He said, “About 12.45am, the command got a directive to escort the jet from MMIA Ikeja to Badagry by road.

“The operation was led by one Capt. Matthew Ekeinde, but in the process of the journey, one of the jet’s tyres burst at College Bus Stop and the jet could not move.

“It was parked at Dapsey Filling Station along Igando for repairs. We have provided security for the plane until it is moved to Badagry.”

PUNCH Metro observed that men of The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps were on the ground to “ensure the safety of people” living in the area.

The Igando Divisional Police Officer, Adeoye Olugbemiga, came with his team around 12pm to control on-lookers.

In a short time, some of the residents turned the scene into an amusement park and began to pose and take shots near the plane.

One of our correspondents observed that the plane’s two wings had been chopped off and the cockpit was stuffed with nylons.

The Managing Director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, Nnamdi Udoh, in a statement, said the aircraft had long been within the agency’s facility till Wednesday night when it was removed.

Udoh said, “The aircraft that was sighted by the residents was actually a junk one belonging to the late Apostle Gabriel Oduyemi of Bethel Ministries.

“The aircraft was actually released to Capt Ekeinde who will be using it for educational purposes in Badagry, Lagos.”

Ekeinde confirmed on the telephone that the scrap plane belonged to him.

He said, “The aircraft will be situated in a multi purpose and entertainment centre which will be open very soon.

“When opened, the centre will be the first of its kind in West Africa.”

Police Kill Three At University Of Uyo Over N100 Transport Fees

Thursday 13 June 2013

Sources have it that the Nigerian police in Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom State, today shot dead three protesting students at the University of Uyo.
One of our sources said he was certain only of one casualty, but the other said the figure was higher.
Several sources disclosed that the students were demonstrating against the introduction of transport fees.
Eyewitnesses said a peaceful procession on campus turned violent, leading to the burning down of the vice chancellor’s office located at Ikpa Road in Uyo.
“At least three students were shot and killed by the police,” said a student source. He added that the police contingent had been brought in to quell the uprising.

Unconfirmed reports said university officials have closed down the school indefinitely after the protests that turned violent.
An eyewitness said that the protest was started by engineering students protesting the introduction of fares for the school bus shuttle. The school earlier moved   the engineering faculty and the faculty of sciences from the town campus to the permanent site at Nsukara Offot. “The distance between the two locations is very far,” said the source. He added: “Before now the school provided buses that shuttled between the two campuses of the university, and the bus service was free to all students. Now this morning the students woke up to the announcement that a fee of 100 naira has been fixed for the bus services.”
Sources disclosed that the fares infuriated students who afterwards mobilized for a peaceful protest. He said the university officials then brought in policemen to break up the protest. Two of our sources accused the police of using excessive show of force against the unarmed protesters.
“They started firing teargas, and this made the students to respond by turning violent. The students started hurling whatever objects, they could lay their hands on at the police and blocked all the entrances and exits locations in the school,” said one of the sources.
The sources said the protesters were stunned that the police fired live ammunition at them. They said the irate students then burnt down the VC’s office, other nearby buildings and the school gate.

An 11-year-old girl, Chinecherem from Uruagu Nnewi, Anambra State who was allegedly raped by a 32-year-old son of her mistress is reportedly died.

Chinecherem, an orphan and the only surviving child of her parents, according to the source, was raped in the night by her mistress’s son on May 27, 2013 at Uruezi Egbema Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area where she was serving as a maid.

Daily Sun was informed that on the night of the incident, the victim’s madam had travelled out leaving Chinecherem and her son to take care of the house.

“When Ifeanyi defiled her, she started bleeding in the morning. The boy disappeared after raping Chinemerem and it was his father (Ifeanyi’s father) who discovered that something was wrong in the morning and took the little girl to a hospital, where she was crying in agony, touching her private part before she gave up on June 3, 2013,” the source said.

The source said that hospital authorities confirmed that there was a lot of semen deposited in her private part. The victim was said to have lived with the family for seven years and had taken her common entrance to enter junior secondary school before she met her death.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Anambra State Police Command, Awka, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka confirmed the incident and said investigation was still ongoing while the suspect is still at large.

Boxer Bash Ali bashed by Minister of Sport’s security detail [VIDEO]

Nigerian boxing legend, Bash Ali, 57, was manhandled by policemen after attempting to see the Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi in Abuja on Thursday June 6th.

According to the Nigerian Telegraph, the boxer, who is seeking to become the oldest man to hold a world boxing title defence, and wants to have his defence staged in Nigeria, jostled to get an audience with President Jonathan, who was at the Abuja National Stadium to inaugurate ‘Rhythm ‘N’ Play on Thursday. Ali scuffled with the president’s aides, which got the attention of Jonathan. After having been allowed to approach the president, and after stating his mission, Jonathan directed that the boxer see the Minister of Sports for further discussion on the matter.
Ali however alleged that when he tried to see Abdullahi at a private luncheon held with celebrities and a few others, he was manhandled by the minister’s aides and denied audience with the minister.
“There is no respect in this country for the people who should be respected,” Ali fumed.
“How can I, when all I am trying to do is lift up my country’s name, be assaulted by a bunch of scoundrels all in the name of protecting their master? I was already a world champion when they were in primary school.”

A 47 year-old father of five, Lateef Jimoh, on Friday 7th stabbed his wife Olufunmilayo Amudat to death at their Omoniyi Estate home in Akure, Ondo state.
The former banker turned taxi driver committed suicide by hanging himself shortly after the killing.

Neighbors disclosed that a court had dissolved the couple's 16-year-old marriage just two weeks ago and that Funmilayo who was a trader came to pack her belongings when she was murdered by her husband who had begged her not to leave him but she refused.

One of the children of the deceased discovered the gruesome scene after returning from school and raised an alarm. Both bodies were taken to the Ijapo police station after some men from the Deji of Akure's palace brought down the dangling body and the rope, having conducted some appeasement rites. Five children now orphans.

FG To Ban Pure Water In 2014 For Sake Of Goldman Environmental Prize

Posted on Friday 7 June 2013 No comments

Friday 7 June 2013

Determined to check the continued despoliation of the environment, the Federal Government yesterday said plans are underway to ban the use of plastic bags in the country.

Minister of Environment, Mrs. Hadza Mailafia, who dropped the hint during the 2013 World Environment Day celebration in Abuja, said government would favour the use of paper bags in their place.

Mailafia, who said the ban would take effect from January 2014, also said the Federal Government was also considering banning the use of sachet water.

According to her, the move to ban the plastic bags are necessitated by the numerous health and environmental hazards associated with their use.

The minister noted that unlike the paper bags that could easily decompose, plastic bags are non-biogradable materials which could stay in the soil for years, contaminating water sources when washed into the rivers by the rain.

Relying on the Food and Agriculture Organisation, FAO’s, statistics, the environment minister said one-third of global food production is wasted from farm to stock which is equivalent to 1.3 billion tonnes of food annually; while an estimated 870 million people go hungry worldwide. She said more than 20,000 children under the age of five also die daily from hunger.
